S. H. CAMPBELL COUPLER RELEASE RIGGING Fil ed Oct. 15. 1923 2 Sheets-Shim! 2 INVENTOR S. H.CAMPBELL B Y W ATTORNEY to form trunnions STERLING H. CAMPBELL, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOB COMPANY, OF ST. LOUIS, MISSOURI,
T0 RAILWAY Devices A coaroaarron or mrssoun coUrLiin-nELEasE n-ieer ve.
Application filed October is, 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STERLING II. CAMP- BELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, United States of America, have invented a certain new and useful Coupler-Release Rigging, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description as will enable anyone skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference beinghad to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification.
My invention relates to a coupler release rigging and particularly to that form of rigging which comprises a connector formed of two parts pivoted together a vertical longitudinal plane, such as 1s shown, for example, in my co-pending application Serial No. 646,994 filed June 2, 1923. In carrying out the present invention I provide the upper part with oppositely extending trunnions an the lower part with corresponding bearings, the parts being so formed and proportioned that they may be sprung together to form a closed loop.
In the accompanying drawings, which 11- lustrate two forms of release rigging made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a front elevation of the connector; Figure 2 is a side view of the same; Figure 3 is a view showing the method of assembling the connector; Figure 1 is a side View of a modified form of connector together with the operating arm and lock pin; and Figure 5 is a front elevation of the form of connector shown in Figure 4..
Referring first to Figures 1, 2 and 3, 5 indicates an operating arm provided with the usual eye 6 and adapted to lift the lock pin 7, provided with an eye 8, by means of the connector hereinafter described. The up per part of the connector consists of a loop 9 the ends of which are turned outwardly 10. The lower part of the connector consists of a loop 11 having upwardly and inwardly inclined arms 12 near the ends of which are formed recesses 13 serving as bearings for the trunnions 10. Formed in the inner inclined faces of the arms 12 are guide ways 14: leading to the recesses 13.
In assembling the device the upper open loop 9 is threaded through the eye 6 of the operating rod, and the lower open loop to move in parts together.
Serial No. 668,501.
11 is threaded through the eye 8 of the lock pin, after which one of the trunnions 10 is inserted in one of the hearings in Figure 3, the end of the other trunnion being placed in one of the guide ways 14, as also shown in this figure. The loop 9 is now drawn upwardly so that the wedging action of the inclined guide way 14 will force the trunnions toward each other until the second trunnion springs into its bearin when the two open loopswill be engage to form a single closed loop, as shown in Figure 1. The loop 9 may be drawn upwardly by means of the actuating handle 15 (Figure 1) 1 which rotates the rock shaft 16 and thus throws the ar1n-5 upwardly into the position shown in dotted lines. The rock shaft 16 is carried end of the car 18. V In Figures 4: and 5 I have shown a slight modification of the'connector. "In this modification the arms of the loop9 are somewhat farther apart than in .the preceding form and the ends of the loop instead of being turned outwardly are turned inwardly to form trunnions 10 and the arms 12 of the lower loop are provided on their outer sides with guide ways 14s. This form of connector is assembled in a manner similar to the preceding form except that the upper loop 9 is forced downwardly to spring the two described my invention,
Having fully and desire to secure by what I claim as new Letters Patent of the United States is: 1
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with an operating arm, of a lock pin, and a device for connecting said arm and pin, said device comprising a recessed portion and a projection adapted to be sprung into engagement with said recessed portion to form a closed loop.
2. In a device of the class described, the combination with an operating arm, of a lock pin, and a device for connecting said arm and pin and comprising two parts each having two arms for engagement with the arms of the other, the engaging portions of the arms of one part being so spaced with respect to those of the other part that they must be sprung out of normal relative posi the 13, as shown in brackets 17 on the I ing between said arm and pin, the parts of said connector being adapted to be. sprung into engagement with each other.
4:. In a device of the class described, the combination with an operating arm, of a lock pin, and a two-part connector eXtending between said arm and pin, the upper part of said connector comprising a loop with outwardly projecting trunnions, and with lower part comprising an elongated loop having bearings engaging with said trunnions.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with an operating arm, of a lock pin, and a two-part connector extending between the said arm and pin the upper part of said connector comprising a loop with outwardly projecting trunnions, and thelower part comprising an elongated loop having bearings adapted to be sprung into engagement with said trunnions.
6. In a device of the. class described, the combination with an operating arm, of a lock pin, and a two-part connector extending between saidarm and pin, the upper part of said connector comprising a loop with outwardly turned trunnions, and the lower part comprising an elongated loop the arms of whichconverge upwardly and terminate in bearings adapted to be sprung into engagement with said trunnions.
7. Ina device of the class described, the
combination with an operating arm, of a lock pin, and a two-part connector extend ing between said arm and pin, the upper part of said connector comprising a loop with outwardly turned trunnions, and the lower part comprising an elongated loop the arms of which converge upwardly and terminate in bearings adapted to be sprung into ongagement with said trunnions, the inner faces of said arms being provided with guide Ways for the ends of the trunnions.
8. Ina deviceof the class described, the combination with an operating arm, of a lock pin, and a two-part connector comprising two loops, one engaging with the eye of the arm and the other with the eye ofthe pin, one of said loops being provided with a pair of oppositely extending trunnions, and the other with a pair of hearings to receive said trunnions,
9. In a device of the class described, the combination with an operating arm, of a loop engaging with, the eye of said arm and provided with a. pairof oppositely extend ingtrunnions, alock pin, and a second loop engaging with the eye. of said pin and provided with bearings to receive said trunnions.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal.
