To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, STERLING H. CAMP BELL, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at the city of St. Louis, State of Missouri, United States of America, have invented a certain new and useful Coupling- Release Rigging, of which the following is such a full, clear, andexact description as will enable any one skilled in the 1 art to which it appertains to make and use the same referencebeing had to the accompanying drawings, formlng part of this specification.
M invention relates to a coupler release rigging of that kind known as the push down type in which the operating lever worksin avertical plane so that it may be operated either by the hand or foot of the brakeman. The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective device of the class referred to and one which will not be likely to'get out of order or to become detachedfrom the car or the coupler locking in. r
In the accompanying drawings which illustrate some forms of devices made in accordance with my invention, Figure 1 is a top lan view, Fig. 2 is an enlarged detailed view showing the connection between the operating leverand extension arm. Fig. 3 is a front elevation, Fi 4 is a section taken on the line H of *ig. 2. Fig. is an enlarged front view showing a modifica' tion of the connection between the operating lever and extension arm. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the parts shown in Fig. 5, the extension arm bemgomitted. Fig. 7 is a view similar to 5 but showing a further modification, and Fig. 8 is a top plan view ofthe arts shown in Fig. 7, the extension arm being omitted.

1920. ,The bracket 11 surrounds the inner end ofthe operating lever 12, the outer end 13 of which is bentdownwardly' as best shown in Fig. 3 so that the lever may be operated not only by hand, when the brakeman is standing on the ground, but may also be operatedby footrwhen the brakeman is standing upon the ladder round of the car. The inner end of the lever 12 is provided with a notch 14 engaging with a Specification of Letters Patent.

corresponding projection of the bracket to prevent longitudinal movement of the lever in the bracket. In my patent above referred to the operatinglever is shown as of considerable less thickness than the width of the slot. In the present instances, however, it is desirable to have the lever fit snuglv in the bracket so as to prevent lateral movement of the lever. The lever will then re main at a constant distance from the end of the car. 15 is an extension arm having formed in its outer end a recess 16, and provided at its inner end with a portion 17 extending through the eye 18 of the coupler locking pin and preferably terminating in a book. The locking pin 18 is carried 'in the usual coupler head 19.
In order to connect the outer end of the extension arm 15 with the operating lever 12, the said lever is provided with a bracket 20 secured to it by a bolt or rivet 21. The bracket20is provided with loops 22 for the passage of the sidesof the link 23, which link surrounds both the lever 12 and extension arm 15 and engages with the notch 16 in the said arm to prevent longitudinal movement of the arm with respect to the lever.- The fitbetween the arm 15 and the link 23 is such as to allow of a certain amount of lateral play so that the arm may accommodate itself to the longitudinal movement of the coupler head relative to the car. The bracket 20 carries a plate 241 extending between the lever and the arm upon which the latter rests. This plate 24 is preferably somewhat wedge shaped as shown in Fig. 4.
In applying my device to a car, the end 17 of the extension lever 15 is first engaged with I the eye 18. The link 16 is passed around the outer end of the arm 15 and in engagement with the recess 16. The bracket 20 is then drawn upwardly over the lower end of the link and the operating lever passed into position through the link, after which thelink is riveted or bolted in positiononthe lever thus firmly securing the twoparts together. The lever may now be engaged with the bracket-11 in a manner which will be understood by referenceto my priorpatent above referred to.
In Figs. 5 and 6, I have shown a modification of the means for securing the operating lever and extension arm together. In this modification, the bracket 20 is replaced by adapted to engage with the recess 16 in the arm. This bracket 25 is provided with a plate 27 extending between the arm and the lever, said plate being of such length as to allow the arm tobe passed down between it and the upper end of the loop 28 when the said arm is in inclined position, after which thebracket is placed over the operating leverand secured in position by bolts or rivets 26.
In Figs. 7 and 8 I have shown a further modification in which the separating plate 27 is omitted from the bracket 25 so that the extension rests directly upon the operating lever and the upper edges of the bracket 25. In applying. this form of bracket, it is merely necessary to drop the bracket over the arm and lever when they are in proper relative position and rivet or bolt the bracket on the operating lever.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a car carrying a coupler provided with a locking pin, of a pivot bracket for the operating lever secured to the car, a push down operating lever pivoted on said bracket, an extension engaging with the locking pin, and a separate connecting bracket carried by said operating lever at a spaced distance outside said first named bracket andengaging with said extension to allow the movement of the latter to compensatefor the longitudinal movement of the coupler.
2. In a deviceof the class described, the
combination with a car carrying a coupler head provided with a locking pin, of an operating lever pivoted to move ina vertical plane, an extension arm engaging with the eye of the locking pin and provided at its outer end with a recess in its upper edge,
and connecting bracket carried by said operating lever and provided with means engaging with the recess and preventing the disengagementof said operating lever and arm While the parts are in position on the car. y
3. In a device of the class described, the combination with a car carrying a coupler headprovided with alocking pin, of an operating lever pivoted to move in a vertical plane, an extension arm engaging with the eye of the locking 'pin andprovided atits outer end with a recess in its upper edge, and a connecting bracket carried by said operating lever and provided with a loop engaging with said recess and preventing the disengagement of said operating lever and arm while the parts are in position on the car.
4:. In a device of the classdescribed, the Y combination with a car carrying a coupler head provided with a locking pin, of an operating lever moving in a vertical plane, an extension arm engaging with the locking pin and provided at its outer end with a recess in its upper edge, and a bracket carried by said operating lever and provided with a loop engaging the recess in said arm, said bracket having a contact plate extending between said lever and arm and upon which the latter rests.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination with a car carrying a coupler head provided with a locking pin, of an opcrating lever moving in a vertical plane, an extension arm engaging with the locking pin provided at its outer end with a recess in its upper edge, a link surrounding said lever and arm and engaging with the recess'in the latter and the bracket secured to said lever for holding said link in position thereon.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination with a car carrying a coupler head provided with a locking pin, of an operating lever moving in a vertical plane, an extension arm provided at its outer end with a recess in its upper edge, a link surrounding said lever and arm and engaging with a recess 011 the latter, and a bracket secured to said lever for holding said link in position thereon, said bracket having a contact plate extending between said lever and arm.
7. In a device of the class described, the combination with an operating lever, of an extension arm, and a connecting bracket secured to one of said parts and having positive locking engagement with the other to prevent disengagement of said parts.
8. In a device of the class described, the combination with an operating lever, of an extension arm, and a connecting bracket secured to one of said parts and having positive locking means engaging with a recess in the edge of the other to prevent disengagement of the parts.
9. In a device of the class described, the combination with an operating lever, of an extension arm, a connecting bracket secured to one of said parts, and a link engaging with said bracket and surrounding both said operating lever and extension arm.
10; In a device of the class described, the combination with an operating lever, of an extension arm, a connecting bracket secured to said operating lever, and a link engaging with said bracket and surrounding both said operating lever and extension arm and engaging with a recess in the edge of the latter.
