To all whom it may concern: I Y
Be it known that 1, JOHN P. BALL, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, United States of America, have invented a certain. new and useful Imp-rovement in Pile-Cutting Saws, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device more especially adapted for sawing off pile timbers under water, by utilizing a straight blade saw connected with a twin driving enparts; means for supplying and controlling" the compressed air for the motor; and means for guiding t-he direction of-the device, by hand;
My invention also includes bracing arms carrying the twin engines and suitable frame members supporting the main, arms, guide means for holding the machine :in position while the saw is in operation; pulleys orv wheels secured to the journals of the traction rollers in conjunction with belts whereby all the traction wheels are operatively connected together and various improvements in construction, arrangement and design, all of which will be hereinafter more fully set forth. v
In the accompanying drawings, which show a certain adaptation of my invention and form a part of my specification, Figure 1 is a plan of my invention. Figure 2 is a side elevation. Figure 3 is a sectional elevation taken substantially on the line 33 of Figure 1, looking in the direction of the arrows.
Referring to the drawings A indicatestwo bracing arms; B, the twin engines; C is a blade saw; D the forward driving mechanism; E the traction elements or rollers; F flexible guide rods; Gr rods connected with the pistons of the engine for actuating means whereby the tractionrollers are operated.
The various elements thus generally referred to may be of any suitable construction and arrangement capable of supporting and operating the sawiand for guiding and driving the device forward.

The bracing arms A preferably consist of four longitudinal channel ironsa and a suflicient, number of diagonal bracings '5, the bracing arms on opposite sides of the device being connected by transverse bars 0 .which also support the traction rollers E. Attached to the bracing armson opposite sides of the device are two guiding handles, d, which. are preferably braced by two upright rods, e. The twin engines generally indicated at B consist of twocylinders f, each provided with a piston g, (shown in dotted lines. in
Figure 1)'and two D valves .7L. .These are supportedand bolted to the'bracing arches by the bent ends 2'. The driving power ,is preferably compressed air and is: supplied by the intake pipe j, and the-exhaust pipe 75. The saw blade C is preferably a stiff blade with suitable' teeth Z, and is bolted to the pistons at m. y l V The forward driving mechanism: is a slow geared ratchet wheel having angular teeth at intowhich a pawl drops; the pawl 5 being pivotally secured to the,arm.6, which in turn is pivotally.connectedto link 0. On the lower side of this ratchet wheel is a beveled gear which drives a corresponding bevel wheel p, which is bolted to a driving shaft g. On this driving shafts], at either end, isa pulleyr, and a belt or chains, which drives the pulleys at the endofthe shafts of the traction rollers, shownat z. The traction rollerst are preferably sharp toothed wheels which catch in the surface or top of the pile and induce a forward travel of the frame and the saw; the. sharp toothed wheels being firmly secured to the driving shafts.

istazai The guide rods-are preferably made up of the bars u, attachedto the frame at the rear end of the bracing arms and are further supported by the spring rods o, fastened to the bracing arms at w. The driving rods G for actuating the pawl and ratchet mechanism of the traction mechanism, are connected at the forward ends with the pistons of the cylinders f by apin and slot as at m and fulcrumed intermediate of their ends at m. The link 0 is pivoted to the cross arm y, which is pivotally connected to both driving rods G; and the rear ends of the driving rods are held in proper position by means of a brace plates.

It will be understood that the device is intended to operateunder water but not limited thereto and can be'employed to cut foundation piling, sheet piling or construction timbers.
What I claim is 1., A pile cutting saw, comprising a frame adapted to be disposed across the piling,
power-imparting means. mounted on said frame and provided with a reciprocating piston, a saw-blade secured to the piston so as to reciprocate. therewith, guiding members for, controlling said frame, and means mounted intermediate of the sides of the frame and operatively connected with the piston whereby the frame is fed forward while the saw-blade is'operated.
2. A pile cutting saw, comprising a frame, a longitudinally disposed saw-blade, powerimparting means whereby the saw-blade may be reciprocated, traction mechanism adapted to engage with and travel on the sawed'upper ends of the piles, and means intermediate of thesaw-blade andthe traction mechanismwhereby the device is moved forward as the saw-blade reciprocates.
3. A pile cutting saw, comprising a frame adapted to extend transversely of the piling, a pair of motors mounted at the forward end of theframe and on opposite sides so as to have their pistons reciprocate horizontally, means for controlling the power medium for said motors, a saw-blade connected at its opposite ends to the pistons of both motors, traction rollers mounted between the sides of the frame, adapted to engage wi-th the tops of the sawed piles, means for driving the traction rollers, and means intermediate of the roller driving means and the motor-pistons whereby the saw is advanced with each complete reciprocation of the saw-blade.

A pile cutting saw, comprising a main frame, traction rollers mounted on said frame so as to travel on the tops of the sawed piles, power-imparting means mounted 011 said frame, a saw-blade connected with said power imparting means so as to be reciprocated thereby, yielding members secured to the frame so as to extendin advance of the saw blade, said members being and means intermediate ofthe power imparting means and said pawl and ratchet mechanism for imparting movement to the latter. 1
6. In a pile cutting saw and similar devicesthe combination with a plurality of traction rollers adapted to travel on the sawed ends ofthetimber's, and a, blade saW fed to the uncut timber by said traction rollers, of flexible guide rods in contact with said timbers, levers connecting the saw blade with the feeding mechanism to drive the saw, and hand holders for guiding and freeing the frame. 7
