PORTABLE BANDSAW.
Application filed April 17, 1922. serial No. 553,405.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, TLLEY OMALLEY, a. subject of Great Britain (who has declared his intention to be a citizen of the United States), residing at Cordova in the Cordova Precinct `and Territory 'o'f laska, have invented certain' new and useful Improvements in Portable Bands'aws, of which the following is a specification.
The invention has reference -to saw machines andl particularly to improvements in the construction and design of machines of the band saw type. j
The main purpose and object ofthe invention is to provide an improved band saw machine of a Vportable character adapting it to be conveniently used for under-water work cutting off piles, and sawing trees or wood. V
An additional object is to provide a band saw having means for adjusting the cutting saw and utilizing air pressure as a propelling force.
A further Object of the invention is to provide a device of the above character that is simple in construction7 strong and durable and which it is believed may bel manufactured at a reasonably low oost.
Various other Objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent during the continuance of the following description'.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a diagrammatic view of the invention, partly in ,plan and partly in section.
Figure 2 is a bottom plan view.
Figure 3 is a horizontal cross'se'ction of the frame taken on line 3 3 of Figure l.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view illustrating the manner in which the screw rod is locked to its adjusted positions.
The invention is embodied in a supporting frame of adjustable sections, one of which includes an elongated guide rail 10 having a relatively thickened portion 11 adjacent oneend which portion is provided on its inner'side with a longitudinally extending groove 12 for a purpose to be hereinafter explained.
Bolted or otherwise fastened to the shoulder portion 11 of the guide rail and on opposite sides so as to be in spaced parallel relation to one another are supporting plates 13 and 14. Positioned between the plates adjacent their outer end and fastened to each is a spacing block 15. These plates extend at right anglesto the guide rail and are adapted to support the motor casing 16.
This casing is preferably located at an ntermediate point on the plate and is supported by suitable brackets 17 extending cross wise between the plates and suitably fastened to each as indicated at 18. Con-` nected to. one side of the motor casing is a valve member 19, provided with an operating lever 20 which serves to control the pressure admitted intothe casing-through the air hose 21. Extending centrally through casing 16 is a drive shaft 22 which has .its forward end journalled in block 15 and any suitable mechanism may be encased within housing 16v for rotating the shaft vunder pressure of the air admitted through hose 21. Aiiixed to the other end of shaft 22 isla drive gear 23, held in place by nut 24. This drive gear meshes with pinion 25, the latter being integral with friction wheel 26. The wheel and pinion are rotatably supported by a bearing braoket27 fastened to block 15. l/Vheel 26 supports one end of an endless band .saw 28, vtheother end of which isY similarly supported by a second friction Wheel 29 mountedl to turn freely on'bea'ring 30 at the end of supporting arm 31. Each friction wheel isheld in. place on its respective bearing bymeans of a nut 32. Arm 31' iscarried by a tubular slide 33 extending at right angles from one end thereof and having arsquare bore for receiving thelsquare guiderail 10. Y
vIn operation the saw is supported by two' operators, one at each end of the frame to hold the saw up to the pile, tree or other object being sawed. The frame is preferably constructed of some light durable material to provide a saw of the class described which can be easily handled and transported from place to place by one or two persons and, it
, is obvious that by employing air pressure as a'propelling medium much of the weight usually accompanying the motive power is eliminated, thereby increasing the lightness of the machine without depreciating its driving power.
From the foregoing it is believed that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily understood and there fore further detailed description is deemed unnecessary.
What is claimed is: Y
l. A band saw machine comprising a supporting frame of adjustable sections, one of which includes a guide rail while the other includes a slide mounted for longitudinal adjustment along the said rail, an endless band lsaw means, means on the slide for ro. tatably supporting one end of the saw, means on the rail for rotatably supporting the other end of the saw, an adjusting screw rod having a threaded portion adapted to thread through a portion of the frame providing the guide rail, and a head on said screw rod adapted to engage the slide for moving the same in either direction along said. guide rail.
2. A band saw machine comprising a supporting frame of adjustablesections, one of which includes a guide rail while the other includes a slide mounted for longitudinal adjustment along the said rail, an endless band saw means, means on the slide for rotatably supporting one end of the saw, means on'the rail for rotatably supporting the other end of the saw, an adjusting screw rod having a threaded portion adapted to thread through a portion of the frame section providing the guide rail, a head on said screw rod adapted to engage the slide for moving the same in either direction along said guide rail, and a locking screw cooperative with said slide for constituting an end abutment for the head, and adapted for being screwed tightly against said head to force the same against the slide to lock the adjusting screwrod Vagainst rotation.
3. A band saw machine comprising the following elements in combination, a friction wheel supporting member, said supporting member including a pair of side plates adapted to support therebetween a power applying means, a friction wheel supported upon said member, means for rotating said friction wheel also mounted upon said supporting member, a guide rail secured to said su ortin' member a su ortinarm co-v operative with said supporting member, a
friction wheel mountedV upon said arm, aV
slide member secured upon said arm and adapted to longitudinallyl slidablyV engage said guide rail, a band saw operable over said friction wheels, an adjusting screw rod having a threaded portion adapted to thread through a portion of the guide rail and including a shank portionfreely rotatable in a bore therefor in said slide member,a head on said screw rod freely rotatable at times in a socket formed therefor in said slide member, and a locking screw cooperative with the shoulders formed by said socket in forming thrust abutments for said head and for being screwed tightly against said head to force the same against said shoulders to lock the adjusting screw against rotation. Y
In testimony whereof I aiX my signature.
