Lanterns.
Patented April 21,1874.
Hf/@f UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE WILLIAM BURNS OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.I
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 149,916, dated April 21, 1874 application tiled December 11, 1873.
To ait w/Lom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM BURNS, of the city of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns, of which the lantern will be held together by the bail.
In the drawings, A represents thepdonle; B, the globe; C, the base; D, the guard-wires; E, the bail; F, return or bent portion ofthe bail, and Gr hole in the guard-wire. rlhe base, dome, and globe are made in any ordinary or suitable manner, and of the usual sizes. The guardwires D are firmly attached `to the base and suitably curved to pass over the globe, and their upper ends are provided with holes, which are made 011 a level with similar holes through the dome A. The bail E is inserted through the hole in the guardportion of wire and corresponding hole in the dome, which locks or secures the parts together, as shown in Fig. l.
It will thus be seen that a very simple and cheap loose globe-lantern is produced and the parts all held together by the bent portions ot the bail or their equivalent pins.
The bail can be readily removed at one or both sides, as may be desired, when the globe can be taken out for the purpose ot' cleaning or repairs; in practice, however, it will not be necessary to remove the globe for cleaning purposes, as the opening through the base frr the reception of the oil-pot is large enough to admit the hand. If a small oil-pot should be used, the more frequent removal of the globe will be necessary.
What I claim as new is as follows:
The guards D and dome or cap A, in combination with the bail E, the latter passing through the guards and perforations in the dome, thus securing the parts in position, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
v WILLIAM BURNS. Witnesses:
