WASHING APPARATUS.

Be it known that I, FLOYD L. SPENCER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Windsor, in the county of WVeld and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in IVashing Apparatus, of
which the following is a specification.
In carrying out the present invention it is my purpose to provide a washing apparatus which will be especially useful in the washing of show windows and the like and whereby the windows may be washed and subsequently dried.
It is also my purpose to improve and simplify the general construction of washing apparatus of the class described and to provide a window washing apparatus which will embrace the desired features of simplicity, efliciency and durability, which may be manufactured and marketed at a small cost, and which will embody comparatively few parts and this so arranged and co-related as to reduce the possibility of derangement to a minimum.
With the above recited objects in view and others of similar nature, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a view in side elevation showing my apparatus in use.
Figure 2 is an enlarged fragmentary side elevation of the head of the apparatus showing the brush in active position.
Figure 3 is a similar view showing the brush in inactive position and the wiper in active position.
Figure 4 is a sectional view through the head.
Figure 5 is a plan view of the head partly in section.
Figure 6 is a fragmentary front elevation of the head showing the bristle block removed. I
Figure 7 is a fragmentary rear elevation of the bristle carrying block.
Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a metal water connecting pipe which also serves as a handle of my apparatus. At the lower end the pipe 1 is equipped with a coupling 2 by which one end of a flexible hose 3 may be connected to the pipe 1, the other end of the hose 3 being adapted for connection with a water outletthe trough as clearly shown in Figures 1 pipes 7, and depending from, said casting is 4 as illustrated in Figure 1 of the drawings. The pipe 1 is also equipped with a handoperated valve 5 by means of which the flow of water through the pipe 1 may be controlled at the will of the operator.
The other end of the pipe 1 is externally threaded to engage in one end of a socket section 6. The other end of the socket section 6 is connected to laterally extending branch pipes 7 arranged at right angles to the socket section and in axial alinement with each other. These branch pipes 7 are in open communication with the pipe 1 by way of the socket section 6 so that as the Water flows through the pipe 1' it may pass through the socket section 6 and also through the branch pipes 7 terminating in inwardly extending axial alining nipples 8, 8, respectively. Arranged between the nippics 8, 8 is a water distributing read 9 that lies partly within the branch pipes 7, 7. This head 9, in the present instance, is in the form of a hollow casting 10 formed at opposite. ends with outwardly extending nipples 11 that align with the respective nipples 8, 8 and these nipples 11 are connected with the nipples 8, 8 by unions 12 so i that the head may be swung about its connection with the nipples 8 and at the same time permit the casting 10 to remain in open communication with the branch pipes 7.
The outer face of the casting 10, that is the face of the castingremote from the branch pipes, is formed to provide an outwardly extending discharge trough 13 that extends longitudinally of the casting and has its outer edge provided with perforations 14 spaced apart along the length of and 5 of the drawings. Arranged in face to face contact with the trough end of the casting 10 is a block 15 formed with a longitudinal slot 16 that receives the trough 13. This block 15 carries bristles 17 and constitutes a removable brush head which may be readily detached from the casting 10 when worn. In the present instance, the block 15 is held to the casting 10 by means of screws. 18 or other fastening devices that pass through the block and engage in the casting 10.
Integral with the inner end of the casting 10, that is the end adjacent to the branch an extension 19 to which is fastened as at 20 the inner end of a suitable form of clamp The outer ends of the arms of, the
clamp 21 carry a rubber wiper 22 and the arms of the clamp 21 are held in clamping engagement with the wiper 22 by means of a bolt 23 which when loosened permits the wiper to be adjusted or removed when worn.
In accordance with my invention the outer end of one of the branch pipes 7 has fastened thereto one end of an arm 24: and connected to the arm 2a. is a segment 25 formed with a slot 26 in which works a pin 27 carried by the. adjacent end of the extension 19. This pin 27 is equipped with a thumb screw 28 adapted to bind against the segment 25 to hold the head thin the desired adjusted position.
hen it is desired to wash the window the head 9 is swung to the position shown in Figures 2 and l of the drawings and the thumb nut 28 tightened upon the pin 27 to lock the head in such position. The valve 5 is now open and the water flows through the pipe 1, socket section 6 and branch pipes 7 into the hollow casting 10 and through the trough 13 and apertures lat against the window thereby permitting the window to be effectively washed with the brush.
After the washing operation the flow of water is stopped by closing of the valve 5 and the head 9 swung to the position shown in Figure 3 of the drawings. the. head being locked in this position by the thumb screw 28 on the pin 27. The wiper will now be rubbed over the window to dry the same.
In the swinging of the head to one position or the other it will be understood, of course,
that the thumb nut 28 is loosened so that the pin 27 may travel freely from one end of the slot 26 to the other end and when the head is in the desired position the thumb nut is then tightened.
I have entered into a detailed description of the construction and relative arrangement of the parts embraced in the present and preferred embodiment of my invention in order to impart a full, clear and exact understanding of the said embodiment. I do not desire, however. to be understood as confining myself to the specific construction and relative arrangement of parts inasmuch as in the future practice of the invention various changes and modifications may he made such as fall within the scope of my invention as defined in my appended claims.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is r 1. In washing apparatus of the class described, the combination. of a hollow casting having its front end extended outwardly to being perforated, a brush head detachablyconnected to the casting and formed with a slot through which said trough projects, and tubular supporting means for said casting, said siuiportingmeans also serving as a conduit for conveying water to said casting, and a pivotalconnection between said casting and said water supply means.
In a washing apparatus ofthe class described, a hollow casting having a portion 7 of its front end extended outwardly to provide a trough and the outer wall of the trough being perforated, a brush head de tachably connected to the casting and formed with a slot through which said trough projects, and tubular supporting means for said casting, said supporting means also serving as a conduit for convey ing water to said casting, and a pivotal connection between said casting and said water supply means, and co-engaging elements carried by said casting and said water supply means whereby said head may be locked in different positions.
