IMPROVEMENT IN COMBINED BRUSHES AND SPRINKLERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0- 1S0,9S5, dated August 15, 1876; application filed April 17, 1.876.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE BIRrwrsTLE, of the city and county of Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented an Improved Oonibined Brush and Sprinkler, and declare the following to be a specification thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of my invention. Fig. 2 is a transverse vertical section of the brush-head and sprinkler on the line of the diameter.

My invention is designed to be used for washing windows, carriages, and for other similar purposes. It consists in making the handle a hollow tube to conduct water into a bent and perforated tube surrounding the brush, whence it is discharged in jets or spray upon the article which is being washed. It isto be connected by a hose to the city waterpipes, and may be used wherever there is a reservoir, or other sufiicient water-pressure can be obtained.

My invention is distinguished from others of its class in that the spray-tube entirely surrounds the brush and discharges the water, not upon the brush itself, but upon the surface which is being washed, to rinse the same.

Hitherto a long'handled brush has been dipped into a pail or other vessel of water and raised dripping to the window; but as the bristles cannot retain the water, the brush needs again and again to be dipped'into the water.

In my invention the water is flowing constantly into and from the perforated tube, (as indicated by the arrows in Fig. 2,) so long as the washing is continued, thus keeping the brush wet, and at the same time thoroughly rinsing the Window of the dirt which has been dislodged by the brush. The operation of washing and rinsing is simultaneous and continuous.

The handle A is tubular throughout, and is connected by any suitable coupling to the hose B. It terminates near the brush 0 with a screw-thread, a, by which it connected with the tube D. At the place of coupling a washer, b, is employed to make the joint watertight. The tube D is bent to surround the head of the brush O, and is continuous with the tube A. Upon the under side of the tube D, where it surrounds the brush, is perforated a series of small holes, 0 c, to discharge the Water, as shown in Fig. 2.

As the wetness of the brush is apt to warp the brush-head I solder the spray-tube to a metallic sheet which covers the top of the head, and is fastened to it by screws, thus preventing the warping.

Instead of a brush a sponge may be used in combination with the bent tube D, but this substitution would evidently be within my invention.

I ain aware that fountain-brushes and hydraulic window-washers have been constructed with a spray-jet tube applied along the middle of the brush from end to end for the purpose of discharging water among the bristles, and, therefore, do not claim, broadly, the combination of a water-supply apparatus with a brush.

The object of my invention is to furnish a contrivance for sprinkling which may be readily applied to an ordinary brush, so that when the latter wears out, the sprinkler or perforated tube surrounding the brush-stock may be removed and attached to a new one, thus outlasting several brushes.

I claim as a novel and useful invention, and desire to secure by Letter Patent- The combined brush and sprinkler herein described, composed of the tubular handle A, brush O, and perforated tube D, surrounding the brush, and arranged for receiving water from the tubular handle and discharging the same upon the surface to be washed, substan tially as shown and described.
