s *il E I t.
FRANK C. WI'DMANN. OF CLEVELAND, \OHIO.
COMBINED SALT AND PEPPER SHAKER.
Application filed May 16,
T 0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, FRANK C. WIDMANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in a Combined Salt and Pepper Shaker, of ywhich the following is a full, clear, and" exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawmgs. 4
This invention relates to improvements in a combined salt and pepper shaker of the type set forth in my co-pending application Serial No. 630,235 filed April 6, 1923. Briefly, the combined shaker common to that application and the present one comprises a4 container having a partition therein which dividesit into two compartments, a perforated closure disposed across the top of the container, and a selective device cooperating with the closure to permit the flow of one condiment to the exclusion of the other from the container.
The objects of this invention are to simplifv and cheapen the construction set forth s in the above application and to obtain a seolecting device which may be more readily put in place and is less liable to inadvertent removal.
The means for carrying out the above objects will be fully set forth in the following description, which pertains to the accompanying drawings. The essential features of this invention will be summarized in the claims.
In the drawings, Fig. 1 is a plan of a combined salt and pepper shaker showing the normal position of the selective device for permitting the flow of salt therefrom; Fig. 2 is another plan showing the device in position to permit the flow of pepper; Fig. 3 is a vertical section taken on the correspondingly numbered line in Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an elevation of a part of the container showing the mannerl in which the closure may be removed from the container; Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a'fportion of container shown in Fig. 4 with the closure attached to the container; and Fig. 6 is an'elevation of the selecting device removed from the container. I
I have illustrated my invention as used on a combined salt and pepper shaker 10 which is provided with a partition 11, for dividing the container into two compartments as at 12 and 13. A perforated closure i923. seran No. 639,293.
14 extends across the top of the container and carriesa slide 15 which may be arranged to permit the flow of the contents from one compartment to theexclusion of that in the other compartment. The slide is normally held in the position shown in Fig. 1 and is arranged to be moved to the position shown in Fig. 2 by a manually operable lever 16 which may be pivoted at 17 on a bracket 18. This bracket preferably forms an extension of the closure.
To attach the closure to the container, I prefer to employ a pair of cooperating shoulders on the closure and container and a latch for retaining the shoulders in engagement. As illustrated, the shoulders on the container areformedon opposite sides thereof as at 20 and 2l by the upper wall of a recess in the side of thev container. A shoulder 22 on the closure cooperates with the shoulder 20, while a'shoulder 23 on the latch 24 cooperates with the shoulder 21.
The latch 24 is preferably mounted on the same pivotal connection 17 as the lever 16 and is normally urged into locking position by a spring 25. The latch preferably comprises a bifurcated member, the sides of which extend outside the bracket 18 and the intermediate portion of which forms the shoulder 23. laterally from the latch beyond the edges of the lever 16 to permit the operator to release the latch from engagement with the shoulder 21 and thereby to remove t-he closure from the container.
when the container is inverted and shaken, the contents ow from the compartment 12,
while the contents of the compartment 13 are retained in place. -1
When it is desired to use the contents in the compartment 13 to the-exclusion ofthe contents of the compartment 12, the user presses the lever 16 and thereby moves the slide 15 tothe position shown in Fig. 2. This' movement closes the openings 31 and uncovers the openings 33 and thus permits the flow of condiment from the compartment 13.
Suitable ears 26 may project Y As soon as the pressure on the lever is released, the spring 25 pushes the lever outwardly, thus causing the slide to assume its former position.
When it is desired to remove the closure for' purposes of filling the compartments, the user releases the shoulder 23 from engagement with theshoulder 21 by pulling outwardly on the ears 26 against the tension of the spring 25. When the latch is thus released, the closure and slide may be re moved as a unit from the container. To replace the closure the reverse procedure is followed, that is, the shoulder 22 is placed in engagement with the cooperating shoulder 20, whereupon the opposite side of the closure is pressed downwardly until the latch 24 is brought into engagement with the shoulder 21.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that my invention provides a device which when adapted to a combined salt and pepper shaker enables one container to be used for both condiments `and permits the use of one condiment to the exclusion of the other. Moreover, the invention provides a device which may be readily `locked to the container'and easily removed therefrom for filling or cleansing purposes, but isl not liable to be inadvertently removed in the normal use of the article.
l. In combination a container having spaced notches therein, a closure for said container, a slide movable relatively to the closure andk carried thereby, an inwardly extending shoulder rigid with the closure and engaging one of said notches, a bracket .carried bythe closure, a pair of levers mounted on a common pivot on saidbracket, one of said levers being adapted to engagethe slide for moving it with relation to the closure andthe other of said 'levers being adapted to engage the other of said notches for clamping the closure to the container.
2..In combination, ia container, a closure therefor, a slide movable relatively to the closure, a lever pivotally mounted on' the closure and operatively connected to the slide, a latch pivotally mounted on the closure and adapted to engage the container for locking the closure thereto, said latch having a laterally extending portion projecting beyond the side of the lever, whereby the lever lmay be operated independently of the latch and the latch may be operated independently of the lever.
3. In combination, a container, a perforated closure therefor, a perforated slide carried by the closure, a lever operatively connected to the slide and having the fulcrum therefor on the closure, a pivoted latch having the fulcrugn thereof on the closure and on the same pivot as same lever, said latch comprising a U-shaped member havin@ the sides extending outside the lever and having the intermediate portion extending transversely of the container and cooperating with a'shoulder thereon for locking the.
mediate portion extending transversely ofA the container and cooperating with one of saidshoulders for locking the closure to said container and a spring for urging the lever and latch in opposite directions.
5. In combination, a container, a closure therefor, a slide carried by the closure, said container having oppositely spaced shoulders thereon, said closure havingan inwardly extending shoulder cooperating with one of the container shoulders, a bracket on the closure, an operatingl lever and a latch lever therefor, a slide carried by the closure, said container having oppositely spaced recesses therein, said closure having an inwardly extending shoulder cooperating with one of said recesses, a bracket on the closure, an operating lever and a latch lever mounted on the bracket, the former lever being 0peratively connected to the slide and the latch lever being adapted to cooperate with the other recess in the container for locking the closure thereto, said latch lever having a pair of laterally extending portions for enabling it to be disengaged from the con'- tainer, and spring means for urging the latch lever toward the container and the operating lever away from the container.
In testimony whereof, I hereunto affix my signature.
FRANK C. WIDMANN.
