' M. ROSENWASSER z? y FABRIC CUTTING DIE Original Filed April 30. 1920 INVENTOR.
Patented May 6, 1%241.
treats? MORRIS ROSENWASSER. OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FABRIC-CUTTING DIE.
Application filed April 35), 1920. Serial No. 377,802.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MORRIS Rosnnwassnn, residing at New York, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Fabric- Cutting Die, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to a new and improved device for cutting blanks from sheet material, such as cloth or leather, and one of the objects of the invention is toprovide a new and improved device of the above character adapted for use in cases where it is desirable that the mateiral out from the blank is to be re-united,vthe construction being such that the parts of the blank after being formed are still held in united relation by integrally formed connecting means until they are ready to be assembled in the formation of a garment.
More particularly my invention comprehend-s a new and improved die adapted to cut out the parts of sandal uppers, whereby the parts cut away to form the sandal upper are the exact size and shape to be used as the attaching straps, and whereby the formed parts are integrally united until they are ready to be sewed together in a further operation in the formation of the upper.
In the accompanying drawings, wherein I have illustrated a preferred form of embodiment of my invention:
Figure 1 is a plan view of my improved die.
Figure 2 is a side elevational view thereof.
Figure 3 is a sectional view taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1.
Figure 4% is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4-4 of Figure 1; and
Figure 5 is a view of a blank such as is adapted to be cut by my improved die.
Referring now to the drawings wherein similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views thereof, the reference numeral 1 denotes the rim or exterior cutting surface of the die, which in the present instance, as above indicated, is adapted to form a blank for a sandal upper. This rim is of the cross-sectional form as indicated in Figure 4 the reference numeral 2 denoting the cutting edge.
Carried by the rim, as by means of the cross bar 3, are two cutting forms 4 and 5 respectively, each of which is provided with cutting edges 6 and 7. These cutting forms are also of the cross-sectional shape shown Renewed March 13, 19%..
in Figure e. The cutting form f extends to the rear edge of the device and is fastened to the rear side of the rim as at 8. The cutting form 4 is adapted to sever from the interior of the blank a strap, such as isillustrated at a in Figure 5, and the cutting form 7 is adapted to cut from the interior of the blank a strap portion, such as is indicated at b in Figure 5, leaving a tongue 0, such as is indicated in Figure 5, which tongue forms a portion of the upper of the sandal through which the strap a is adapted to pass, as is shown in my copending application filed of even date herewith.
At this point it may be noted that in the making of garments, particularly shoes, it i is desirable that the uppers and straps which are employed to fasten the shoe upon the foot of the wearer should be of the same shade and color, inasmuch as in manufac turing establishments the material used varies in shade and color, it has hitherto been necessary to match the materials which enter in the structure of the sandal. In order to eliminate this objection I provide interrupted spaces as at 9 and 10, and the cutting edges 6 and 7 of the cutting forms at and 5, so that during the operation of the device a small uncut neck or extensions (Z and 6 will connect together the strap portions a and b, and the tonugue 0, whereby the parts will be held together until such time as it is necessary to utilize them inthe structure of the sandal, whereupon they can be readily severed by hand and stitched together, as is usual in the art to which this invention pertains.
The cross piece 3 carries two cutting members 11 and 12, which cut the slits f and g which forms the loop h under which the strap a extends when the sandal is assembled, and upon a cross-piece 13 are provided cutting members 14:, which stamp from the material small apertures which provide ventilation in the manufactured sandal, and also operate to ornament the same.
Each of the form members 4 and 5 also carry cutting members 15 and 16, which,
are the exact form or shape necessary for the strap portions.
As many changes could be made in this construction without departing from the scope of the following claims, it is intended that all matter contained in the above description or shown in the accompanying drawing shall be interpreted as illustrative only and not in a limiting sense.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A fabric cutting die, coinprisingoan outer cutting rim, cross bars arranged to connect with the opposite sides of the said rim, a plurality of cutting forms each sup-' ported near one end by a cross bar, the said cutting forms each having parallel. cutting sides arranged adjacent to each other and a cutting end connecting the said sides at the ends of the said forms supported by the said cross bar, the said cutting forms being arranged side-by-side within the said rim, the said cutting forms having their other ends connected together and provided with an extended cutting portion whereby the said forms are connected with the said rim.
2. A fabric cutting die, comprising an outer cutting rim, cross bars arranged to connect with the opposite sides of the said run, a plurality of cutting 'iOllllS each supported near one end by a. cross bar, the said cutting forms each having parallel cutting sides arranged adjacent to each other and a cutting end connecting the said sides at the ends of the said forms supported by the said cross bar, the said cutting forms being arranged side-l y-side within the said rim, the said cutting forms having their other ends connected together and provided with an extended cutting portion whereby the said forms are connected with the said rim, and a cutting edge of each of the said forms near where they are connected together being provided with a small indentation whereby the cutting edge is interrupted.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature in the presence or two witnesses.
