Description

STATES I}; B. CARTER, 0F BLOOMINGTON, ILLINOIS.
MILK-TICKET HOLDER AND PROTECTOR.
Application filed January 23, 1923. Serial No. 614,485.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ERMIN B. CARTER, a. citizen of the United States, and resident of Bloomington, in the county of McLean and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk- Ticket Holders and Protectors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in milk ticket holders and protectors, and consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of the invention is to provide a milk ticket holder and protector of novel and sim lified construction which is readily engagea le with and removable from the neck portion of a milk bottle or the like and which is ada ted to be applied to the milk bottle to reizaasably and securely hold a milk ticket in rotected position within the neck ortion oi an empty bottle or in a position 111 which disposed exteriorly of the empty bottle or of the bottle containing milk, as desired. A further object of the invention is to provide a milk ticket holder and protector of the character described which is economical to manufacture and thoroughly practical commercially.
Other objects and advantages w1ll be apparent from the following description, considered in conjunction with the accompanyin? drawings, in whichigure 1 is a perspective view showing a practical embodiment of the invention in applied position on a bottle contalnlng milk,
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view partly in side elevation with portions broken away and other portions shown in vertical section, illustrating the position of the holder and protector on a milk bottle when the ticket is supported in protected position wlthln the bottle, and
Figure 3 is a plan view of a blank from which the holder and protector may be formed.
In carrying out my invention, I make nse of a flat body 1 of any suitable material, preferably metal, which is cut, stamped or otherwise formed to conform generally in area and contour with the mouth of a milk bottle 2 or other container with which the invention is to be used. The body 1 is formed with a plurality of spaced apart radially extending integral lugs or ear portions 3 which in the embodiment of the 1nvention illustrated are bent about arcuate lines, as indicated at 4 from positions in which disposed in the plane of the body to positions in which disposed substantially at right angles thereto. In the embodiment of the invention illustrated, the body 1 is provided with four of the lug or ear portions 3, the respective lug or ear portions being spaced equidistantly apart and the arcuate lines indicated at 4c coinciding with arcs struck by a radius of the body 1 which is substantially circular in configuration, as shown. Two of the lug or ear portions 3 are turned laterally of one face of the body 1 while the remaining two lugs or car portions are turned laterally of the opposite face of the body, diametrically opposite lug or ear portions being turned laterally of the same face of the body in each instance.
Similar spaced portions 5-5 are struck from the central portion of the body 1 to extend laterally 0 one face thereof in converging relation until such portions meet adjacent to their outer ends in a plane perpendicular to the plane of the body 1.
The portions 5-5 preferably have the elongated form clearly shown and when struck from the body in the manner de scribed serve as cooperative jaws or clip members adapted to receive and grip a ticket 6 inserted therebetween, the extreme outer end portions 7-7 of the jaws or clip elements being turned away from each other to permit of the easy movement of the ticket therebetween.
ht angles thereto, each lug tee being turned outwardly as indicated at 8 so that the body 1 may be readildy and conveniently applied to or remove from the bottle.
The ticket 6 may be protected from rain, snow and the like and against loss because of detachment from the holder through accident, as might occur when the bottle is overturned or for anyother cause by disposing the body 1 with the ticket gripped between the cooperative jaws or clip members so that the clip members with the ill ticket held therebetween depend within the neck portion of the bottle and the body 1 is releasably held in position to close the mouth of the bottle by the clamping engagement of the pair of lugs or cars 3 which are turned laterally of the same side or face of the body 1 as the clip members 55. The ticket is thus held out of contact with the walls of the bottle and therefore cannot be frozen to the bottom or other walls of the bottle, as freuently happens when a ticket is placed loosely within an empty bottle.
"When a bottle filled with milk has been delivered, the body 1 is removed from the empty bottle and is placed in inverted position on the filled bottle, the ticket gripping jaws or clip members with the ticket gripped therebetween extending upwardly from the body 1 and the latter being held on the neck of the bottle in the position shown in Figure 1 because of the clamping engage ment with the neck of the bottle of the pair of lugs or cars 3 which are turned laterally of the face of the body opposite that from which the ticket holding jaws or clip members 5 are turned.
if desired the body 1 may be placed upon an empty bottle in the position illustrated in Figure 1 although for the purpose of protection, the body 1 will ordinarily be disposed upon an empty bottle in the position illustrated in Figure 2 and as hereinbefore described. In placing'the body 1 upon the neck {portion of the bottle or removing it there rom, in either of the two positions described, the pair of ln s or cars 3 which are upstanding at a particular time may be grasped and the body thus conveniently manipulated to efiect disposition thereof on or removal thereof from the neck: portion of a bottle. This operation may be performed without the use of any tools and without there being any necessity of the operator removing his gloves from his hands, whereby the comfort of the operator in cold and otherwise inclement weather is enhanced.
The body 1 and the portions integral therewith, as hereinbefore described may be made of any suitable material and b preference are made of metal having sum cient inherent resiliency to cause the clamping legs or ears 3 to engage with the bottle neck in the manner described and the cooperative jaws or clip members to grip a ticket inserted therebetween firmly.
neeaeea Obviously, my invention is susceptible of embodiment in forms other than that illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and I therefore consider as my own all modifications of the forms of the device disclosed herein which fairly fall within the scape of the appended claims.
aving thus escribed the invention, what I claim is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a ticket holder and protector comprising a flat body conforming substantially in contour and area to the mouth of a bottle, a pair of diametrically opposite lugs integral with the body and extending from the marginal edge thereof laterally of one face of the body, said lugs being adapted to clamp ingly engage with the outer wall of the mouth of the bottle to hold the body in closing relation to the latter, and a pair of cooperative clip members integral with the body and extending laterally of one face thereof, said clip members being adapted to releasably hold a ticket inserted therebetween.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a milk ticket holder and protector comprising a flat body adapted to close the mouth of a milk bottle, said body being provided with a pair of diametrically opposite clamping lugs adapted to engage with the outer walls of the moutlref the bottle to hold the body in closing relation to the latter, and a pair of integral clip elements struck from the center of the body to extend laterally of one face thereof, said clip elements being adapted to releasably hold the ticket inserted therebetween and to depend interiorly of the bottle/ 3. As a new articleof manufacture, a fiat body adapted to close the mouth of a milk bottle, a pair of diametrically opposite lugs integral with the body at the marginal 'edge thereof and extending laterally of one face of the body, a second pair of lugs integral with the body and extending from diametrically opposite points laterally of the opposite face of the body, the In of each pair being adapted to clampingy engage with the outer walls of the mouth of the bottle, and a pair of cooperative clip elements struck from the central portion of the body laterally of one face thereof and being adapted to grip a ticket inserted there between and to depend interiorly of the bottle.
