I sawrne MACHINE},
Application flledlOctober 28, 1922. Serial No. 597,599.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALFRED M. SIGNAL- NESS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of North Bend, in the county of Coos and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sawing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to a sawing machine and more particularly adapted for a sawing machine in conjunction with a pile driving rig for cutting off the tops of piling to enable the placing of the caps thereon.
A The object of the invention is to provide a sawing machine of this character which speedily and quickly cuts off tops of the piling and which isnot only under the complete and positive" control of theoperator but which is also adjustable so as to make allowance for grade or the like that may be required in practice.
Other objects and advantages of theinvention reside incertain novel'features" of the construction, combination and arrangement of parts which will behereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, reference .being had to the I accompanying drawings forming part of this specification and in which; I v
Figure 1 is aperspective View, showing the sawing machine organized with a :pile driving rig;
Figure 2 is a fragmentaryperspective "view. illustrating the hanger and associated p w 'Figure 3 is a similar view of the power operated saw and associatedparts;
' Figure 4 is a view in transverse vertical section through; the hanger and saw cylinder, parts being shown in elevation. forthe sake of illustration;
Figure 5 is a view in transverse section, taken approximately on line 5--5 of Figure 3; i v i 1 F'gure 6 is a group view in perspective,
showing in detail the bearing plate and associated collar and locking pin;
Figure? isa detail view in perspective, illustrating the actuated key; and I Figure 8 is a detail view in elevation, showing the anchoring dog orrod.
Referring to the drawings wherein for the sake of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, the numeral 10 designates a pile driving rig which may be of any conventional construction and which along with the other instrumentalities usually employed comprises runners 11 upon which the boiler or other source of steam supply 12 is supported.
Adjacent the outer end of the runner 11 a horizontally disposedv supporting shaft '13 is arranged and is supported in fixed position on the runner by means of brackets 14. A hanger, designated generally at 15 is mounted on the supporting shaft by means of spaced bearing sleeves 16 formed at the upper end of the hanger and embracing the shaft 13, these sleeves "16 having a working fit on the shaft so thatthe hangerwhich normally depends from the shaft 13 may be adjusted longitudinally on the shaft and also rotated or adjusted angularlyabout 7 said shaft. A power operated saw, designated at 20, is mounted on thehanger and includes a steam cylinder 21 supplied with steam from the boiler 12 by means of a pipe line 22, theflow of steam into the steam cylinder being regulated by any conventional ordesired valve means. The saw blade 23 is driven by a piston rod-24 from a piston which is operatively mounted in the steam cylinder and this saw 23 is braced and guided in its-reciprocal movements by means of a :combinedibrace and guide 25 carried by thecylinder and compr sing a yoke, the arms of which are provided with guide slots 26. The arm of the yo'ke' 25 which is connected to the cylinder is'ofUjshaped form. as indicated at 27, and includes a bearing 28 for the piston rod as well as the guide grooves 26.
The steam cylinder 21 has integrally formed therewith or sultably connected with the opening.
On thehanger' 15 a pair of spaced ver- 30 and a key 37 which is associated with the shaft 36 and fitted in the key-way 32 con- 'strainsthe block and consequently the saw to partake of the rotary movement of the shaft 36 while permitting the longitudinal adjustment ofthis bearing block and saw on the shaft. In order that the degree of vertical adjustment of the steam cylinder on the shaft 36-may be precisely determined, one ofthe exposed faces of the key 37 is provided with graduations 38, as clearly shown in Figure 7. These graduations indicate in incheslor in any desired system of units the degree of vertical adjustment. I
Means is provided for effecting vertical adjustment of the saw cylinder on the shaft 36 and preferably comprises'a screw shaft 40 having threadedengagement with an internally threaded opening 41 formed in the bearing block 30'and itself supported on a bearing plate 42' fitted on the shaft'36 above the lug 35 and secured to this shaft by a set screw or the like as indicated at 43, a collar 44 beingfixed to the screw shaft 40 and engaging the plate 42to prevent downward displacement of the screw shaft; By mounting the screw shaft in this manner it is capable of readlly effecting vertical adjustment of the steam cylinder without interfering with horizontal swinging. movement thereof.
, Theupperiends ofthe shafts 36 and 40 are squared, as indicated at 45 and 46,1'espectively, and these squared e'nds'of the shafts are selectively co-operable with the squared socket 47 0f 1 the operating handle 48.. When the-socket 47 is engaged withthe squared end-46 of the screw shaft 40 this screw shaft may be turned toefi'ect vertical adjustment of the steam cylinder on the shaft 36. On the other hand when this squared socketis engaged with the end45 of the shaft 36 the handle, may, be utilized to control the horizontal swing as well as the longitudinal adjustment of the power operated saw.-; The vertical adjustment which maybe effected in themanner hereinabove descrlbedis especially advantageous when it is necessaryto cut off the'piling'onthe grade since the desiredrise or fall. may be given by rcutting'off more or less at each set of plling, this. being regulated by the vertical adjustment of thesaw effected by the screw shaft.
I up onto the deckior top of the runners. The
movement by a conventional block and fall or by means of a small tackle. When under- 7 going such movement, however,: it is; news.
At times it is desired to swing the hanger and may be engaged with the pile during the sawing action.
Iclaim: r

In a sawing machine, a horizontally disposed supporting shaft, a hanger mounted on said shaft for longitudinal and angular adjustment, a power operated saw'including a' cylinder having a bearing block formed thereon, a rotatablevertical shaft mounted on the hanger, said bearing block being fitted on said shaft so asto be constrained to partake of the rotary movement 7 of the sha'ftwhile free'to be vertically adjusted thereon, and a screw shaft cooperable with the bearing: block for effecting vertical adjustment of the cylinder.
3. In a sawing machine, a hanger, a power operated saw having a bearing block, a'rotatable vertical shaft carried by thehanger, said bearing block being fitted on said vertical shaft, a key cooperable with'the bearing block and with the vertical shaft for constraining the bearing block to partake of the mot-ion of the vertical shaft-while permitting longitudinal adjustment of the block on the shaft,'said key having an ex posed face provided with graduations indicating the degree of vertical adjustment, and means for vertically adjusting the block on the shaft.
4. A sawing machine for use with a pile driving rig for cutting off the tops of piling and comprising'a horizontal. supporting shaft, means for securing said shaft to a runner of the pile driving rig, a hanger-slid ably and rotatably' mounted on said shaft, a power operatedsaw, and means for'mounting said saw on said hanger for vertical justment and for horizontal swinging movefor vertical adjustment and for swinging ment. movement in a horizontal plane, and locking 5. In a sawing machine, a supporting mechanism for holding the saw against horishaft, a hanger mounted on said supportz ontal swinging movement relative to its 5 ing shaft for longitudinal adjustment and hanger while permitting the hanger to parswinging movement in a vertical plane,'a take of vertical swinging movement. power operated saw mounted on the hanger ALFRED M. SIGNALNESS.
