WILLIAM C. WETHERHOLT, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
KEY-DUPLICATING MACHINE.
Application filed June 2, 1919.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, VVILLLUI 0. Warren:- HOLT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Key-Duplicating Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The principal objects of this invention are to provide a machine of the kind stated in which the key to be out can be advanced against the tool or cutter either with a rectilinear or other movement, and in which both the pattern key and cut key are on the same side of the cutter shaft and therefore are both under the observation of the opera tor at the same time. Other objects can be gathered from the following description.
The invention is embodied in the example herein shown and described, the features of novelty being finally claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a. view in elevation of the left hand end of the machine.
Fig. 2 is a. plan view.
In the views 4 designates the main frame which has journaled in its upper portion a tool shaft 5 having fixed thereto a pulley 6 for driving the shaft. Bemovably fixed on said shaft 5 are suitable circular tools or cutters 7 and 8, the first being in the form of a. saw for cutting notches having parallel sides and the second in the form. of a file for cutting notches having beveled or inclined sides. 7 designates a collar to take up end thrust in said shaft 5.
9 designates a shaft fixed in the lower portion of the frame parallel to the tool shaft 5. Upon said shaft 9 are two fork arms 11 and 12 each provided with an elongated bearing for the shaft. Each of the fork arms is provided at its upper end on the outer branch with a clamping plate 13 to hold a. pattern or key, as at 14, that is to be duplicated and on its inner branch a clamping plate 15 to hold the key blank, as at 16, out of which the duplicate is to be made. Each clamping plate has suitable means for operating it. Each fork arm 11 and 12 can be swung on the shaft 9 toward and from itstool and each may be slid sidewise on said shaft 9. Be-
I tween the branches of the fork arms 11 and 12 in the path of oscillation of the pattern or key to be duplicated are located pilots or guldes 17 and 18 respectively. The pilots Specification of Letters Patent.

are formed on the ends of threaded horizontally standing stems 17 and 18, the latter being passed through heads 19 on stems 19 standing at right anglesto the stems 17 and 18 The stems 1'7 and 18 are adjustable in the heads 19 in either direction by means of threaded nuts 20 and said stem is fixed in adjusted position by means of set screws 21. The stems 19 are also threaded and passed through holes in the top of the main frame. Said stems 19 are each provided with adjusting nuts 22 for adjusting it forward and rearward and a. set screw 23 for fixing it in adjusted position. These means for adjusting the pilot with reference to the cutter are important for the purpose of compensating for wear in the cutter or to adapt the machine for use with different diameters of cutter.
In practice the pilot determines the depth of the cut. Variation in the width of the cut is made by moving the fork arm to the right or left in which case the wall of the notch in the pattern abutting against the pilot controls the movement of the blank being out.
With this machine it will be observed that the fork arm is capable of movement in a right line and that key notches with straight parallel sides true to the pattern can be out. It will also be observed that because the fork arms are on the same side of the cutter shaft the operation of the pattern, pilot and of the cutting tool can be easily observed and more accurately controlled.
The forms of the parts can be changed without departing from the gist of the invention as claimed.
hat- I claim is:
A key-cutting machine including, in combination, a frame, a rotary cutter carried by the frame, a vertically disposed swinging fork arm having the terminals of its branches lying in substantially the same horizontal plane and in the plane of the axis of the cutter, means for securing a key to be duplicated in one terminal of the fork arm, means for securing a key blank in the other terminal of the fork arm, a pilot supporting means comprising a stem secured in the frame and adjustable transversely the cutter axis, and a pilot secured in said stem and adjustable transversely thereof.
