Description

March 25, 1924` l l C. C. NEI-LIS RADIATOR GAP Filed Dec. 4 1922 Patented it ar. 25, lil-32de CLARENCE C. NELLS, F COLD 33300K, NEW YORK.
To aZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that 1, CLARENCE C. NELLE,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Cold Brook, in the' county of Herkimer, State of New Yorlr, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Radiator Caps;I and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others 1o skilled inthe art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in closures and particularly to closures for the filling tubes of automobile radiators.
rilhe filling tube of the ordinary radiator is so constructed that it is necessary to entirely remove the cap from the filling tube, and then either drop the cap into the pocket of a garment or lay it down somewhere, with the obvious danger ot the same being lost or dropping in the dirt, so that the threads will become closed or clogged and carry the deposit into the water within the radiator.
Une object of this invention is to provide a cap for a radiator filling tube which does not have t0 be removed from the tube, but which has a movably mounted portion arranged to be swung` open when the radiator is to be filled.
Another object is to provide a cap of this character having a cap arranged to screw into the filling tube and a hingedly mount* ed cover arranged to be swung upwardly for filling the radiator, and which has means for holding it against accidental opening movement. i
Il further object is to provide a filling cap of this character having a strainer to prevent the entrance of dust, dirt or other foreign matter with the water when the radiator is being` filled.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing.
1n the drawing:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a radiator cap, made in accordance with the invention, and seated within the filling tube of a radiator, the filling tube being in section.
Figure 2 is a view of the same parts shown in Figure 1, but with thc cover swung into open position.
Figure 3 is a vertical central sectional view through the cap in a plane parallel to that of Figures 1 and 2.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawing` 10 represents the interiorly threaded filling tube of the radiator ll, in connection with which the'present invention is used.
rllhe radiator cap includes a body in the form ot a ring lf2, having the external threaded portion 13, which is engaged in the filling tube 10. rlFhe upper portion of the body is of less diameter than the threaded portion, and has a smooth exterior 14.
At one point in this smooth faced portion 14e there is a notch 15, andA secured within this notch is hinge 16. Connected to this hinge is the smooth-faced dange 17 of the cover 17, which flange is of slightly greater diameter than the portion 11i and arranged to snugly embrace this latter portion when brought down thereon. rilhe @over portion 17 has a hand hold 18 which is grasped to unscrew the device from the filling tube, when it is desired to'remove the same from the filling tube. 1n the Outer face of the portion la, diametrically opposite to the hinge, there is formed a small boss 18 which is arranged to snap into a recess 19, formed in the inner face ot the flange 17', to hold the outer part against accidental opening movement. Vfhen the cap is properly screwed down into the filling tube this cover 17 will lie above the upper end of the body 12 ot the cap so that said cover may be swung open, when desired but which is held from accidental opening by the boss 1S.
A screen 19 .is secured across the lower end of the tube so as to prevent the entrance of dust, cirt or other foreign substances which might pass in with the water when thc radiator is being filled.
What is claimed is.-
