Description
l. KANRICH.
Lanterns.
No.148,708. Patented Marchwylam,
UNITED STATES TENT ISAAC KANRICH, OF NEW BRITAIN, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
Spechcation forming part ofV Letters Patent No. 148,7(BS, dated March 17, 1874; application filed February 27, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ISAAC KANRIOH, of N ew Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, h. ve invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lanterns, of which the following is a specification:
In my improved lantern the glass globe is solid at the base, and is provided with a ange at its top, to which flange a cap is secured. The lantern cap and dome are secured to' gether by vertical bars, and when the cup is placed within the globe the bottom of the dome rests Within an aperture in the center of the cap, a-ll as hereafter described.
The accompanying drawing is a partial section and elevation of a lautern which einbodies my invention. I
A designates the glass globe, which may be of any size desired. It is provided with a tlange, a., at its top, and its base is solid and forms the base ot' the complete device. A cap, B, is secured to the top of the globe A by turning its edge over the iange a, or said cap may be secured at the top of the globe in any proper manner. C designates the lanterncup, provided with a burner of any desired style. This cup is round at its base, and is of about the same size as the inside of the globe at its base. D designates a cylindrical dome, provided with a hinged cover, E. The
cup C and dome D are connected together by bars b b,'\vhieh are about as long as the globe is high. An aperture is made in the center of the cap B, and around its edge a collar, c, is secured, This collar is of a size within which the base of the dome fits easily and large enough, so that the cup C will readily pass through it. A bail or handle, F, is secured to the cap B in. any proper manner.
In order to light the lamp or adjust the Wick, the user takes hold ofthe dome and lifts it with the cup out of the globe. In case the dome is too hot to handle, the hinged cover E can be thrown up a moment, when the dome will cool oft'.
A lantern of this description can be made very compact, cheap, and convenient for use. By having the solid bottom of the glass globe form the base of the complete device, and the oil-cup placed Within the globe, this base will always be free from oil.
I claim as my invention- The cup C and dome D connected by bars b I), in combination with the cap B, globe A, and collar c, all substantially as and for the purpose described.
ISAAC KANRICH.
