I G. SHELLCROSSLEE TOOL \ Filed April 50, 1923 I Q I NEY WITNESS: ATTOR Patented l eflar. 4, 1924.
res
GEORGE SHELLCBOSSLEE, OF CANTON, ILLINOIS.
TOOL.
Application filed April 30. 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE SHELLCROSS- LEE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Canton, in the county of Fulton and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tools, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to provide a tool for use by miners in splitting and cutting fuses.
A further object is to provide a tool of this type which shall include a stationary element formed in longitudinal sections and a knife and a holder adapted to be pivotally mounted between the sections and to engage and split a fuse inserted longitudinally of the knife, or to cut a fuse inserted transversely of the knife.
A further object is to avoid accidents frequently resulting from the operation of splitting fuses by hand, and to provide for making a clean split without the loss of powder in the split portions.
A still further object is to provide a device in which each section of a stationary element shall include an offset portion in which the blade or knife is pivoted, said offset portion being provided with longitudinal channels which together form a bore for receiving the end of the fuse to be split, transverse notches being also provided for receiving a fuse to be cut transversely.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of elements described and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings, Figure 1 shows the device in side elevation; Figure 2 is a longitudinal section, with the cutting element and one side member in elevation; Figure 3 is a section on line 33 of Figure 1.
The stationary element of the device includes a pair of elements 10 and 11 which together form a handle, each of these ele ments being formed with a head 13 ofiset from the longitudinal axis of the handle,
Serial No. 635,683.
in order to provide for the proper mounting of the blade and blade holder.
The elements 10 and 11 are flat on the major portion of the inner surface, and are partly round on the outer surface, being retained in parallel relation by screws let and Each head is provided with a half round groove, such as 16, the grooves together forn'iing a bore for the accommodation of the fuse to be split. The heads are further provided with transverse notches 18 for receiving a fuse to be cut transversely to the proper length.
A blade 20, also termed a knife, is mounted rigidly in a blade holder constituting a handle and formed of two metallic strips 22, 23, riveted together. The blade holder is provided with apertures in each element thereof, and the blade is provided with a registering aperture for the accommodation of a pivot member 24. The pivot also passes through apertures 25 in each section of the stationary element. The relation of the cutting edge and the angle of the bore receiving the fuse is such that the best results are secured, a gradual downward out being provided for and the angle of the cutting edge with reference to the bore being more acute during the latter part of the stroke than at the beginning thereof. The screw limits the movement of the blade toward the open position.
lVhat is claimed is A device of the class described comprising a stationary member formed in longitudinal sections and each including a head offset therefrom, the offset portions having channels therein adapted to form a bore for the fuse, a blade holder operating between said sections, a blade mounted in the holder and adapted to be moved to position for causing said blade to pass longitudinally through the bore, said blade holder including parallel metallic strips having registering apertures and the blade also having an aperture, and a pivot member passing through 'all of said apertures and through the heads.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature.
GEORGE SHELLCROSSLEE.
