Description
UNITED STATES PATENT QEEICE. l
WILLIAM M. KENT, OF BUFFALO, NEW YORK.
IMPROVEMENT IN STEREOSCOPE-STANDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 148,468, dated March 10,1874; application filed January 19, 1874.
To all whom it may concern:
Be. it known that I, WILLIAM MoNEoRTE KENT, of Buffalo, in the county of Erie and State of New York, have invented an Improvement in Stereoscope Sta-nds or Supports, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to stands or supports for stereoscopes, Snc.; and consists in forming the base of the stand into a box or receptacle for the pictures or views used for exhibition on the instrument. The invention further consists iu a swivel or revolving connection in the top of the supporting post or standard, by which the stereoscope may be turned in any direction desired. The invention furthermore consists in the method of connectin g thestereo scope-bar to the standard, as hereinafter described.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 an end view of the revolving joint, showin gthe method of attaching thestereoscope thereto.
A is the base, made in any suitable pattern or design, but preferably square or oblong, having sides B B, thusforming a box or receptacle for holding the views, &c., used on the instrument. C is'anupright post or standard, secured rigidly in the base A, the top of which is provided with a socket or cavity, a, in which a pin or pivot, b, sits loosely, said pin forming part of a slotted piece, D. The slot in this piece D receives a bent metal piece c c', which is bent in the form shown in Fig. 3, with two jaws, c c', through which the bar d of the stereoscope passes, as shown, and which holds it firmly in place, but which will still allow it to be moved back and forth until the instrument clamp may be adjusted to hold the instrument at any desired angle by means of the set-screw e, and may be turned on the pivot b to any point desired. It may also be removed 'alt-o4 gether, as in Fig. 3, and be then used as a common hand instrument. This is a very important feature of my invention, as by its use the stereoscope may be set at any angle desired without moving the stand or receptacle A B.
I am aware that stereoscopes have been before used with the slot in the standard and the set-screw e, but none with which I am acquainted show the griping-jaws c' d.
By this arrangement I produce a device that combines the stereoscope support or stand anda box or receptacle for holding the pictures, in a neat and compact manner.
I do not wish to confine myself to the form or style shown, as they can be made with lids or covers, and with drawers or shelves, for the vlews.
I claim- 1'. In combination, with a stereoscope, the box A B and standard C, substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. In combination, with the slotted piece D and bar d, the clamp c, having the gripingjaws c c', substantially as and for the purpose described. l
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WM. M. KENT. Witnesses O. N. WooDwAEn, A. B. LOVE.
