IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENINGS FOR BAGS.
l"pecitieation forming part of Letters Patent No. 147,866, dated February 24,1874; appli( ation filed `December 17, 1873.
To all lwhom it may concern Be it known that I, MoRRrs SCHWERIN, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastenin gs for Bags 5 and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the artto which it pertains to makeand use it, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification.
Ihe nature of my invention relates to an improvement in fastenings for traveling-bags; and it consists in the arrangement and combination of parts, which will be more fully described hereafter, whereby the fastening is cheapened in construction and rendered more eflicient in operation than as heretofore used.

a represents an ordinary traveling-bag, having a pocket on 011e side, which is covered by the flap c. Secured to this flap, in the usual manner, are the two straps d,- which are prov vided with elastics or rubbers, so as to be extensiblev in fastening and unfastening. Attached to the outer side of the pocket, by rivets, or in any other suitable manner, are the plates e, which have a part of their upper ends cut away, so as to form the tongue or projection g, Whichis then bent downward so as to form the hook fi. To the under or inner side of each strap d is riveted a U-shaped catch, o, the rivets of which pass outward through both straps and metal plate n on the outside.
4 This fastening is very cheap and simple, and the straps are not weakened by having holes punched through them, as has heretofore been the case.
If so desired, the hook and catch may be reversed, the hook being fastened to the strap,
