Be it known that 1, BENEDYKT A. KAszrN- SKI, a citizen of Poland, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hat and Garment Holders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates generally to hat and clothes hangers, one embodiment of the invention being intended for use in theatres, churches or meeting halls generally to receive the hats of the audience, while another embodiment of the invention is intended more particularly for private use.

The invention has for a general object the provision of a suitable hanger on the backs of seats, pews or'the like for use by the public, a further specific object of the invention being the provision of a novel hanger-container for use in private homes to receive garments and keep them properly covered.

For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claims in which the various novel features of the invention are more particularly set forth.

Fig. 1 of the drawings is a perspective view showing the manner of application of my improved hanger to the backs of seats of a public hall.

Fig. 2 is a detail side view of one of the hangers indicating in cross section a portion of the back of the seat to which it is attached.

Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing a type of hanger with which is embodied a bag for enclosing the garment.

Fig. 4 is a side elevation partly in section of this type of hanger.

In the invention as embodied in Figs. 1. and 2 the hanger comprises a substantially semi-circular plate which is adapted to be secured, as by screws 11, upon the seat back 12. Rigid on the back of this plate, and extending vertically thereacross, is a bar 13 which forms a fixed gripping jaw. Pivotally attached as at 14 to the upper end of the fixed jaw 13 is a movable jaw 15 in the form of a rectangular bar and which cooperates with the fixed jaw 13.

The movable jaw normally lies in fiat contact with the fixed jaw and is pressed against the latter by a spring 16 coiled around the hinge pintle 14 and hearing at one end against the back of the jaw, the other end of the spring being held immovable by engagement in a recess 18 in the fixed jaw. The 1n0vable jaw has an integral finger-piece 15 extending upward beyond the fixed jaw, pressure on this finger-piece causing the jaws to open. To facilitate gripping the garment the adjacent faces of the jaws may be formed with cut-outs 20 near their forward ends.

In application to a theatre, church, con cert hall' or the like, these hangers are mounted as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings, upon the backs of the seats, and the hats of the occupants may be conveniently hung therefrom as indicated at 22. I

Referring now to the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 3 and 4, I provide a vertical jaw-bar to which is attached near its lower end, a cross-piece 26. Suitably suspended from this cross-piece is a bag 27 to receive a garment such as the hat 22'. C o-operating with the bar 25 is a movable j aw-bar 28 which is hinged thereto, and urged thereagainst by a spring 29. Depending from the bar 25 is a fixed extension 30 having fixed to its lower end a spring gripper comprising a pair of jaws 31 projecting from a split tube 32, the jaws 31 being opened by pressing on a thumb-piece 33. The jawbar 28 is here shown as provided with a cross-piece 34 adapted to grip a flap 35 on the bag 27 to hold the mouth thereof closed. In Fig. 4 I have shown a further develop ment of the invention in which a fixed jawbar has pivoted thereto one end of each of a pair of parallel links 41 which are attached at their opposite ends to a yokepiece 42. Pivoted to this yoke-piecemidway between its ends as at 43 is amovable jaw bar 44. A tension spring 45 holds the movable jaw bar normally pressed against the fixed bar. These jawbars 40 and 44 have cross-pieces 46 and 47 fixed to their lower ends, a bag 48 being attached to the cross-piece 47. Depending from the fixed jaw-bar 40 is a spring gripper, indicated generally at 49, of similar construction to the gripper shown in Fig. 8 and having its tail-piece projecting behind the lower end of a lever 50 whose upper end projects in front of the lower end 1 of the movable'j aw 44. the lever being fulcrumed between its ends as at 51. The jaw is formed with an integral tail-piece 44 provided. at its upper end with a hook 44 swing downwardly on the links 41 to engage the jaw 40 and grip the flap. When the hat is to be removed, a simple pressure on the tail-piece 44c releases the flap 48' and disengages the hat from the gripper 49.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent of the United-States is as follows: p

1. A device of the-class described comprising a fixed jaw-bar, a spring-pressed jaw-bar mounted on said fixed jaw-bar, a

cross-piece on the lower endof said fixed jaw-bar, a bag depending from said crosspiece, a flap on said bag, and a cross-piece on the movable jaw-bar adapted to grip said flap. 1

A device of the class described comprising a fixed jaw-bar, a garment gripper depending therefrom, a spring-pressed jawbar mounted on said fixed jaw-bar, a crosspiece on the lowerend ofsa'id fixed jaw- The flap a8 is then placed against the cross-piece 46 and the jaw 4A allowed to bar, a bag depending from the said crosspiece, a flap on said bag, and a cross-piece on the movable jaw-bar adapted to grip said flap.

3. A device of the class described, comprising a fixed jaw-bar, a garment gripper depending therefrom, a spring-pressed awbar mounted von saidfixed jaw bar, a crosspiece on the lower end of said fixed jawbar, a bag depending from the said crosspiece, a flap on said bag, and a cross-piece on the movable aw-bar adapted .to grip said flap, and means for simultaneously opening said movable -j aw-ba-r and garment gripper.
