Application filed November 17, 1920. Serial No. 424,767.
new and useful Improvements in Boots and Shoes, of which the following is a specification. I
My invention relates toboots and shoes and particularly to foxed shoes having cloth tops, the object thereof being to provide an improved shoe of the class indicated.
My improved shoe is of that class of foxed shoes which comprise a top or upper whose vamp and quarter are both made from cloth or the like and the distinguishing feature of my invention consists in stitching, or otherwise fastening, two relatively narrow side braces of leather or the like in position upon the outer sides of the lower marginal portions of the upper or top, one at each side thereof, so as to reinforce and protect the lower portion of said top or upper at each side thereof and make it possible to bottom the shoe with a leather sole. In the best form of my invention the two lower marginal side braces terminate at their forward ends a short distance to the rear of the toe and said ends re covered by a'tip or toe cap fastened to the vamp after said side braces have been applied to the upper, while at their rear ends said side braces terminate a short distance forward of the rear end of the shoe and said ends are disposed beneath a counter cover that is secured to the quarter of the top or upper after said braces have been applied.
Other features of my invention are hereinafter pointed out.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a shoe constructed in accordance with my invention.
Figure 2 is a section on line 2-2 of Flg. 1.
Figure 3 shows a modification.
Having reference to the drawings, 1 represents the cloth quarter of the top or upper of the shoe and 2 the usual cloth vamp thereof, said two parts usually being two separate pieces of cloth fastened together by stitches, and a side brace 3 of leather being applied to cover the joint between the vamp and quarter as well as to connect said parts.
To the exterior of each side of the top or upper 1-2 I apply arelatively narrow side brace 3 of leather or other suitable material,
7 that is disposed longitudinally along the lower marginal portion of said upper and fastened along its top edge to thevampanol quarter by stitches 4:. At their forward ends the side strips 3 terminate a short distance to the rear of the toe of the shoe and at their rear ends a short distance forward of the rear end of the shoe. side brace 3 I next apply a counter covering 5 and a tip, or toe cap, 6, said covering and tip beingfastened to the vamp and quarter,
After applying the as well asto the ends of the strips 3, by stitches 7 and 8, respectively. The counter covering 5 overlies and covers the rear end portions of strips 3 while the tip 6 overlies and covers the forward end portions of said strips.
The bottoming of the shoe may be carried out either according to the McKayor the Goodyear welt processes. As shown in Fig. 2 the first mentioned process is employed, the lower marginal portion of the cloth upper together withthe lower marginal portions of both side braces 3, being turned inwardly between an innersole 9 and outersole 10 to which they are fastened by stitches 11 which also fasten the two soles together. When the shoe is bottomed according to the Goodyear welt process as shown in Fig. 3,
the lower marginal portions of the upper and of strips 3,'together with a welt strip 12 are sewed to an innersole 13 and therethe upper that is subjected to the hardest usage. Also the provision of the strips 3 greatly reinforces the lower edge of the 'cloth upper and adapts the latter to be sewed to the bottom partsof the shoe. Furthermore, these side strips greatly improve the appearance of shoes of this class as well as being a protection to the upper; a valuable asset in soling and resoling, and a decided benefit to the public who wears the shoe. Therefore, constitutes the invention a valued improvement in shoe construction. This side brace may be in one or two parts.
What I claim is:
1. A boot or shoe of the character described comprising a top whose vamp. and quarter are separate pieces of cloth joined along a line extending across the instep; a
leather strip covering the joint between the vamp and quarter and stitched to both of said parts; two relatively narrow longitudinally disposed leather side braces fastened in position upon the outer sides of the lower marginal portions of said top and overlying the ends of said strip, one at each side of the top; a toe cap overlying the forward ends of said side braces; a counter cover overlying the rear ends of said side braces; stitches securing the toe cap to said top and to said forward ends and the counter cover to said top and said rear ends and an outer sole, the lower marginal portions of said top and said side braces being turned inwardly together above said outer sole and both fastened to the latter.
2. A boot or shoe of the character de scribed comprising a top whose vamp and quarter are both made'of cloth; two separate relatively narrow longitudinally disposed said side braces a counter cover overlying the rear ends of said side braces; stitches securing the toe cap to said top and to said forward ends and'the counter cover to said top and tosaid rear'ends; an innersole; an outer sole between which and said innersole the lower marginal portions of said top and said side braces extend inwardly, and stitches fastening said inturned portions of said top and braces to said innersole.
