BOOT AND SHOE CONSTRUCTION.

Be it known that I, JosnrH GARGAN, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Peabody, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful. Improvements in Boot and Shoe Constructions, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in the construction of boots and shoes, and

more particularly to the uppers thereof.

A preferred object of the invention is the provision of a support to the shoe upper by forming the same of a plurality of pieces of material of substantially the same width.

Another object of the invention is to provide a construction of back-stay which will prevent what is known as heel cord chafing, which is produced by the forming of wrinkles in the shoe-upper directly over the cords in the heel causing the st tches in the back-stay to break and rendering the shoe weak and unsightly.

Still another object of the invention is the forming of the shoe-upper from scrap stock or material which would otherwise be wasted, due to the making of the same from a plurality of pieces instead of the customary one or two, as at present, which results in much more economical shoe production than is possible at present.-

A still further object of the invention is the joining of the upright seams of the sections of the shoe-upper at points removed from the centralback portion thereof.

These and other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent from a reading of the specification, the following being a detailed description of the present preferred embodiment which is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a view in perspective, in side elevation, showing the position of attachment of the back-stay to one of the side por tions of the upper; and

Figure 2 is another view in perspective, the same showing the back of the shoe and the manner of attaching the back-stay to the side portions of the upper.

stitches 6. The side sections 3 and 4 and back-stay are suitably bound at their upper portion by the edging 7, and secured at their bottom portion to the ramp 1 by means of stitches 8 or the like.

As best shown in Fig. 2, the back-stay 5 is formed of a wide strip of leather or other materialv and joined to the side-portions 3. and 4 at a point removed from the central back portion of the upper. The joining of the three sections of the upper in. this manner avoids the necessity of lapping the edges at the back of the shoe, thus precluding the formation of wrinkles at that portion which results in injury to the feet of the wearer and weakening that part of the shoe due to the breaking of the stitches by the constant wrinkling. Also, by providing only a single thickness at the back of the shoe, instead of the lapped edges now employed, the shoe structure is strengthened and the sections of the upper do not separate due to breaking of the stitches resulting from such wrinkling.

Various changes and modifications may be made in the details of construction and design of my shoe without departing from the spirit of the invention; but it is to be understood that such changes and modifications are within the scope of my inventive concept, except as the same may be limited in the following claims: I

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new is:

1., A shoe structure comprising a vamp, andan upper formed of a plurality of sections, each of substantially equal width, said sections being permanently secured to each other at points removed from the central back portion of the upper. V

2. A shoe structure comprising a vamp 5 made of rubber material, an upper made of nonrubber material and formed of two side portions and a back-stay, said back-stay being joined to the side portions at points all substantially removed from the central back portion of the upper, and a binding strip at the top of the upper.
