Description
Dec. 4,1923. v v 1,476,548. W. A. SCOTT, JR
SHIRT Patented Dec. 4, 1923.
UNITED STATES WILLIAM A. sooTT, JR, or PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA.
o SHIRT.
Application filed September 15, 1922.
To all whom it may conoem:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. SooTT, J12, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, a 6 citizen of the United States, have invented or discovered certain new and useful I1nprovements in Shirts, of which improvements the following is a specification.
The creeping up of shirts which occurs 10 especially when the trousers are notsupported by suspenders and is a matter of daily discomfort, is due to the fact that when a man sits down or stoops, the trousers and drawers are drawn down, and when pulled up the shirt is moved up also. It has been proposed to extend the shirt and form the extension so as to surround the legs and fasten these leg portions below the knees. This is objectionable, as when the 2 wearer sits down or stoops, the leg portions are stretched over the knees and exert a pull on the upper portion of the garment.
The invention described herein has for 7 its object to so construct the front portions of the legs of the garment at and adjacentto the knees that there will not be any stretching over the knees when the latter are bent. The invention is hereinafter more fully described and claimed. 2'
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, Fig. 1 shows aman having on the improved shirt, in stooping position, and Fig. 2 is a detail view on an enlarged scale of a portion of the shirt.
In the practice of the invention the upper portion 1 of the shirt is made in a suitable manner. The skirts or lower'portions are made to form two independent leg portions 2, which are made of such a length as 40 to extend below the knee. The lower end of each leg portionis so constructed or provided with suitable means as to so bind the legs below the knees that the ends of the Serial No. 588,399.
wearer is in stooping or sitting position,
provision is made whereby the knees may project more or less through the leg portions. A convenient manner of providing for the projection of the knees or the slipping of the front portions of the legs of the garment over the knees, is to cutaway portions in the front of the legs as shown at 8 in Figs. land 2. It will be understood that the improvement may be applied to either outside shirts or to undergarments. The edges of the openings should be finished in any suitable manner to prevent ravelling.
I claim herein as my invention:
1. A garment having an upper and a lower portion, the lower portion being provided with means adapted to engage the legs of the wearer at points below the knees and provided with openings having finished edges in the fronts of the lower portion at points opposite the knees of the wearer.
2. A garment consisting of a shirt portion and a lower portion such lower portion consisting of members adapted. to enclose the legs of the wearer and provided with openings having finished edges at points opposite the knees of the wearer, said members being provided with means below said openings for engaging the legs of the wearer below the knees.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto set my hand.
WILLIAM A. SCOTT, JR.
