Description

G. A. MATTERN.
- BATHING SUIT.
APPLICATION FILED 'AUG.8.'19 2I Patented July 4!, 11922 I citizen of the G-EQRGE A. MATTERN, F BERKELEY, CALIFORNIA.
BATHING SUIT.
Application fi led August e, 1921.
T 0 all whom, it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE A.
United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bathing MATTERN, a
Suits, of which the following is'a specifica- 1 tion.
My invention relates to the class of bathing-suits. These garments are usually made of knitted goods; and comprise a trunk portion and a leg portion, to which, is added a skirt portion. Y
Knitted 'fabric is relatively elastic in one direction and non-elastic in a direction at right angles to its elastic phase.
Bathing-suits should fit the wearer closely and to this end they are made with the elastic phase of the goods running circumferentially of the garment, that is horizontally around the wearer, the non-elastic phase running vertically. As the length of the garment must also be as close y as possible proportionate to the wearer, it follows thatin securing the circumferential close fit, the initial length fit is, under the stretching of the elastic phase, even more closely shortened; and as, in this direction, the goods are relatively non-elastic,. the result is an in convenient lengthwise tightening of the garment onthe wearer, giving undue pressure on shoulders and crotch.
The object of my invention is to overcome this diiliculty; and to this end my invention consists in the novel bathingsuit which I shall now fully describe by reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Fig. l is a front view of my bathing-suit.
Fig. 2 is a rear view of the sam ig. 3 is a rear view of the suit turned inside out. i
Fig. 4 is a vertical section, enlarged, on the line 4.4 of Fig. 1, through both front and back, the dotted lines showing the position under the yielding of the insert member 4.
The bathing-suitis made of knitted goods and comprises a trunk portion 1, a leg portion 2, and a skirt portion In all these portions the elastic phase of the goods runs circumferentially, asis indi cated by the vertical shading and the horizontal arrows in the several figures. In the Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4i, 1922. Serial No. 4 0,467-
front of the garment, this phase of the goods is as usual continuous and unbroken from end to end of the garment, as shown in Fig. l; but in the back of the garment, as shown in Fig. 3, this is not the case, for between the base of the trunk portion and the top of the leg portion, there is inserted a strip 4 of suitable material, having an elastic phase in one direction only, which direction is up and down of the garment, that is, at right angles to the elastic phase of portions which it joins. This is indicated by the horizontal shading in Fig. 3 and by the vertical arrows in Figs. 3 and 4. This strip is only in the back of the garment and extends approximately the width thereof. In its best and lpreferred form this insert member 4 is of nitted goods.
In the skirted suit herein illustrated, the strip 4 lies under and is concealed by the skirt. Fig. 2.
It will now be seen that the suit may be made a close fit both circumferentially and lengthwise, and yet give relief from the relatively non-elastic vertical pressure, by reason of the insert member 4, the elastic phase of which is up and down.
claim I 1. A bathing-suitof knitted goods comprising a trunk portion, a leg portion, and a skirt portion, in all of which the elastic phase of the goods is circumferential; and a strip inserted in and extending across the width of the back only of the garment under the skirt portion and between the base of the trunk and the top of the leg portion, said strip having an elastic phase at right angles to the elastic phase of said portions.
2A bathing-suitof knitted goods comprising a trunk portion, a leg portion, and a skirt portion, in all of which'the elastic phase of the goods is circumferential; and a strip of knitted goods inserted in and extending across the width of the back only of .the garment under the skirt portion and between the base of the trunk and the top of the leg portions, said strip having itselastic phase at right angles to the elastic phase of said portions.
In testimony whereof I name to this specification.
GEORGE. A, MATTERN.
