Description
Nov. 27, 1923 L. LElTMAN VEGETABLE GRATER Filed April 18. 1923 IN VENTOR 1,.LEZ7'MAN A TTORNEYS Patented Nov. 27, 1923.
LOUIS LEITMAN, OF MOUNT VERNON, NEW YORK.
VEGETABLE GRATER.
Application filed April 18, 1923.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Lotus LnrrMAN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mount Vernon, in the county of Westchester and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Vegetable Grater, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in kitchen utensils and has particular reference to a vegetable grater.
An object of the invention is to provide a grater which may be conveniently mounted upon a suitable receptacle and upon which a vegetable may be securely retained while the same is being grated by a movement of the grating element relative thereto.
Another object is to provide an improved grater of simple and inexpensive construction, which will be effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The above and other objects will appear more clearly from the following detail description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, which illustrates a preferred embodiment of the inventive idea.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the grater constructed in accordance with the invention and showing the same in operative position;
Figure 2 is a side elevation thereof, the receptacle on which it is mounted being shown in section;
Figure 3 is a section on the line 33 of Figure 2; and
Figure 4 is a fragmentary side elevation, partly broken away and shown in section, illustrating a different form of clamping device for the body'of the grater.
The device is shown as comprising a base 4 of elongated rectangular formation having at one end a depending end section 5 adapted to engage a receptacle 6 and act as a retaining means for securely mounting the device on said receptacle. The opposite end of the base 4 carries an adjustable yoke member 7 having portions engageable with the upper and lower sides of the base 4 and being adjustable longitudinally of said base so as to accommodate different sized receptacles between it and the end section 5. YVhen the yoke member 7 is engaged with the receptacle 6 at a point diametrically opposite that engaged by the end section, a
Serial No. 632,976.
suitable fastening device in the form of a screw 8 carried by the upper portion of the member 7 may be utilized to fasten said member in a retaining position. In order that the base 4 will not be marred by engagement of the screw member 8 therewith a metallic plate 9 is preferably mounted upon the upper surface of the base 4 and is engageable by the screw 8 when the member 05 7 is being secured in its adjusted positions.
The device further includes a vertically disposed frame arranged adj acent; one of the longitudinal edges of the base 4 and including the end pieces 10 joined at their ends by the cross piece 11, the outer surface of which is disposed in the same plane with the adjacent longitudinal edge of the base 4. Said edge of the base 4 and the cross piece 11 have secured thereto the cooperating guide members 12, each preferablyformed of a strip of material bent upon itself to provide a channel or groove, the grooves of the guide members being opposed to receive therein the longitudinal edges of a grating element 13. This grating element is arranged to'be reciprocated longitudinally with respect to the base and is provided at one end with a handle 14 to facilitate its operation.
In order that a vegetable to be grated may 86 be securely retained in position on the base 4 while the rating element 13 is being reciprocated, t e invention provides an abutment 15 in the form of a block adjustably mounted upon the base and arranged transversely with respect thereto, so that a vegetable may be placed on the base between the abutment and an adjacent end piece 10 and thereb brought into operative engagement with t e grating surface of the member 13: To adjust the abutment 15 so as to accommodate different sized receptacles disposed upon said base in the manner described, the base 14 is preferably provided with a longitudinal slot 16 through which a threaded pin 17 carried by the bottom 'of the abutment 15 extends. A wing nut 18 is threaded onto the pin 17 and may be tightened against the bottom of the base 4 to retain the abutment in an adjusted position.
The form of clamping device illustrated in Figure 4 may be substituted in lieu of the end section 5 and includes an angular member 19 secured to the end of the base 4. The depending portion of the member 19 is 110 provided with a screw threaded opening 20 for receiving the threaded shank 21 of the adjusting screw 22, said shank extending through the opening formed in the cooperating clamping member 23. When in operative position the clamping members 19 and 23 receive therebetween the upper edge of the receptacle 6 and by turning the screw member 22 in the proper direction, it will be obvious that said clamping members may be caused to tightly grip the receptacle and thus maintain the grater in operative position.
What is claimed is:
In a vegetable grater, a base of elongated formation capable of being supported upon the rim of a receptacle and having its ends projecting beyond said rim, a frame supported by said base and including upright end pieces and a cross piece connecting the upper ends of said end pieces, opposed guide members one of which is carried by one longitudinal edge of said base and the other by said cross piece, a grating element movable in said guide members and longitudinally of said base, an abutmentadjustably carried by said base and cooperating With one of said end pieces to retain a vegetable on said base in operative relation to said grating element, an end section fixed to one end of said base and engageable with the side wall of said receptacle, and means positioned at the opposite end of said base and adjustable longitudinally thereof to engage said side wall at a diametrically opposite point from said end section whereby to prevent movement of said base with respect to said receptacle in the direction of movement of said grating element.
