UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CARL H. BIJSSELL, or SYRACUSE, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOB T CROUSE-HINDS- comrm,
or sxmousn, NEW YORK, a coaroaa'rron or new YORK.
PLUG RECEPTACLE.
Application filed June 21,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I CARL H. BISSELL, a citizen of the United states, and a resident of Syracuse, in the county of ()nondaga and State/of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Plug Receptacle, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to plug receptacles for use in connection with electric conduits,
and has for its object a plug receptacle which is particularly simple in construction, highly efficient and durable in use; and it consists in the novel features and in the combinations and constructions hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In describing this invention, reference 13 had to the accompanying drawings in which like characters designate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View, partly in elevation, of this plu receptacle.
Figure 2 is an end e evation looking upwardly in Fig. l.
Figure 3 is a view similar to Fig. l of an- 26 other form of my invention.
This plug receptacle comprises generally, a body or cap having means for connection with an electric conduit and havin an open side, a tubular housing connecte to said 0 open side, and a socket located in the housing and movable into the same from the inner end and held in position therein by the cap.
1 designates the body or cap which may be of any suitable form, size and construction,
it being here shown as in the form of a hood having a rounding or spherically curved top and having an internally threaded nipple 2 projecting upwardly therefrom for connection with an electric conduit, this nipple extending in a tangential direction from the spherical wall 1 and having its rear side extending tangentially relatively to the spherical curve of the top of the cap 1.
The cap is open at its lower side and is formed with an internal flange 4 and with a flange 5 skirting the opening at said open side and extending in advance of the flange 4, it being arranged at an angle to said flan 4. a
6 IS a tubular housing, the upper end of which extends into the open side of the body 1 toward the internal flange 4, the rear 1918. Serial No. 241,222.
margin of the housing being lapped by the flange 5. The housing is secured to the body 1 in any suitable manner as by clamping screws 7 extending throu h external flanges or ears 8, '9 provided on t e housing and the body, the screws threading into the ears 9.
10 is a socket which may be of any suitable form, size and construction, it being here shown as comprising a body of insulation slidable into the housing 1 against an internal shoulder l0 at the front end of the housing, the body abutting at its rear end against the flange 4, and being provided with means to revent turning thereof. As here shown, tlie body is provided with lengthwise grooves 11 which'receive lengthwise ribs 12 on the inner face of the housing 1.
In Fig. 3, the housing is shown as including a tubular extension 13 threading into a coupling 14 which is secured to the body 15 by'screws 16 and ears 17, 18 similar to the screws 7 and ears 8, 9.
In both the forms shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the socket is placed in the housing from the rear end thereof, and in Fig. 3 the socket 19 is formed with a rib 20 at its rear end, the ends of which enter notches 21 in an in turned flan e 22 on the cou ling 14 and hold the socket om turning. The flange 4, Fig. 1, of the cap is also formed with notches 23 similar to the notches 21 for receiving the rib 20 of a socket similar to the socket 19 when substituted for the socket 10.
The extension 13 is provided with a suit- K able closure which upon being opened permits the plug 19 to be inserted in the socket and bring the terminals thereof in electrical contact with the terminals of the socket.
This plug receptacle is especially adapted for electric garages and other charging stations and is readily installed and is weather housing, the socket extending into the housing from the inner end thereof and engaging the internal flange of the body, and having means for interlocking with said housing to 5 prevent turning of the socket, the housing having an opening at its free end, and means for coacting with said internal flange for holding the socket from endwise movement 1sgiuhstantially as and for the purpose speci In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name, at Syracuse in the county of Onondaga, and State of New York, this 7th day of June, 1918.
