' l0 (Cl. 173338) My invention relates to the art of electrical connectors and particularly to socket-plugtype connectors f-or use on shipboard or other locations wherea fluid-tight construction is required;
. w Primarily the invention hasfor its object to provide aplugand receptacle of such construction that water can be kept from entering the conduit, box and conduit and. of such construction that it will keep water of condensationwith- 111 in the conduit or conduit box from entering the receptacle and engaging the contacts therein.
Further, itis anobject to provide a plug and receptacle for use inrconduit boxes which will prevent drafts through the conduits.

In the drawings, in which like numerals of reference indicate likeparts in all the references; 1 represents the body of the shell which is made of suitable insulating material such as Bakelite for example. The body of the shell, which is of tubular form open at one end, is provided internally with a fiat face 2 and opposed recesses 3, the latter being designed to receive the contact springs 9.
Binding posts 4. are molded in the bottom 5 of the body 1, the body 1 being providedwith a rib 6 to separate the binding posts 4 and prevent short-circuiting betweenthe binding posts and the portions of the contact springs 9=that are riveted thereto when the conductor wires are connected. The body 1 is preferably molded of one piece and within a metallic mantle 7 threaded externally to screw into the conduit box cover 31 hereinafter again referred to. The contact springs 9 are riveted at 8 tothc binding posts 4.
.Theplug is' composed of a molded body 10 of suitable insulation such as Bakelite for example, the body 10 having a. passage ll through the same which is of approximately rectangular cross section, the upper portion of which is flared as at 12 .to permit the convenient passage of conductor wires. The neck portion 13 of the body 10 is externally threaded. as at '14. The plugbody 10 is provided with a flattened portion 16. to" cooperate with the flattened portion 2 of the receptacle and thus insure proper mating of the parts. Contact spring-receiving slots 16 are also provided and these slots have ribs l7,and embracing which and located in a countersunk position .asz-it were are the vcontactbinding posts 18 which cooperate with the springs9 of the plug receptacle :when the parts are assembled; v
in order to squeeze the packing ,and efiect a liquid-tight joint. The clamping nut 27 has a portion 28 to cooperate with theccllar portion 21,5
and another portion 29 to cooperate with the flange 22 as best shown in Figure 1 of the drawings.
By reference to Figure 1 it will be seen that- 30 designates the conduit box having acover 31 which is sealed fluid-tightby a gasket 32.
The conduit is designated by the character- 33:
and the conductors 34 which pass from the conduit into the conduit box and are secured to the binding posts 4 and indicated by the numeral 34,
The flexible cable from the contact-binding posts .18 to the portable lamp or other electrical appliance is designated by the numeral 35.
Itshould, of course, be understood that the conduit box constitutes no part of the present invention and is illustrated merely to show a use of the invention. 1
Itwill be observed that when the parts constituting the invention are assembled in the manner indicated in Figure, 1 of the drawings, it will be quite impossible for fluids to enterthe conduit box viathe; plug or plug receptacle because of eiiective sealing which has been provided. When it is desired to disconnect the plug it is only necessary to unscrew the milled clamping nut 27 from the mantle when the plug can be pulled, out of the plug receptacle. V/hen the plug has been pulled out of the plug receptacle water will still be prevented from entering the conduit-box-by reason of the sealing of the cap of that box and the fitting of the threaded mantle into the cover, it being understood that the mantle after it has been threaded into the cover ispreferably'soldered around the threads to insure a fluid-tight. joint. r
By providing the flat faces 2 and 15, itwill be impossible to insert the plug into the receptacle in any but the correct position, ',i..e., the position where the recesses provided by the slots 16 of the plug will be in a position to receive. the contact, springs 9.
Further, it is'to be noted that the fiat face 2 on the side'of the body 1 which cooperates with a registering flattenedportion 15 of the plug body 10, serves to prevent the reversing of the polarity of the device.
Having thus described my said invention, wnat I claim and desireto secure by Letters Patent 1. In connectors, .a plug-receptacle comprising a hollow body of non-conducting material and open at one end only, said body having binding posts sealed in the other end, one endof said binding posts being located inside the body and the other" end outside the body, means to secure terminal wires to the outside ends of said posts, contact springs secured to said posts within the body and a threaded mantle on the outside of said body, substantially as specified. v
2. In connectors, aplug-receptacle comprising a hollowbody of non-conducting material and open at oneend only, said body having binding posts sealed in the other'end, one end of said binding post being locatedinside the body and the other end outside the body,,means tosecure terminal wires tothe outside ends of said posts,

In connectors, a plug-receptacle comprising a chambered body with binding posts molded in place, contact springs carried by'said postsand located within. the chamber of said body, and connecting screwscarried by said posts outsidethe chamber, incombination witha plug, the latter having a, portion with terminal contact lugs adapted to enter said receptacle and cooperate with said contact springs, and means 7 toproduce a water-tight joint between said plug and said receptacle and between said plug and a cable passing through the same; substantially as 5. 9. In connectors, a plug-receptacle comprising a hollow body of non-conducting material and open at one end only, said body having binding posts, means to secure terminal wires to the said posts, contact springs secured to said posts and a threaded mantle on the outsideof said body, means to hold said contact springs against shortcircuiting when a plug, with which the receptacle is adapted to cooperate, is withdrawn, combined with a plug consisting of a non-conducting body having a cable passageway through the same and provided with a slotted skirt, contact posts recessed in the slots of said skirt, said slots receiving said contact springs when plug and receptacle are assembled, a flanged carrier for said non-l conducting body, a gasket on said non-conducting body adjacent the flange of said carrier to engage the end of said receptacle when plug and posts molded in place, contact members carried by said binding posts and located within the chamber of the body and connecting screws carried by said binding posts outside the chamber, a threaded mantle surrounding said chambered body and constituting an integral structure therewith, combined with a plug consisting of a nonconducting body having a cable passageway through the same and provided with a slotted skirt, contact posts recessed in the slots of said skirt, a flanged carrier for said non-conducting body, a gasket on said non-conducting body adjacent the flange of said carrier to engage the end of said receptacle when plug and receptacle are assembled, a flanged nut on said carrier to mate with said threaded mantle and efiect a fluidtight joint between plug and receptacle, packing means carried by said carrier to seal a cable in its passage through said carrier, and means forming a part of the plug and receptacle respectively insuring a mating of plug and receptacle in one position only, substantially as specified.
