-\ IMPROVEMENT IN CHEST-PROTECTORS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 146,365, dated January 13, 1874; application filed April 18, 1873.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, ISAAC A. SINGER, of Kingsbridge, in the county of Westchester and State of N ew York, have invented certain Improvements in Chest-Protectors, of which the following is a specification:

My invention consists in a graduated covering, which may be worn on the chest or back of a person, to protect the wearer from sudden changes of the-Weather, which covering is made of two or more thicknesses of chamois-skin, iiaunel, or other warm material, said thicknesses or sheets being provided with buttons and button-holes, or equivalent ldevices for connecting them to each other, arranged as hereinafter described, to enable the wearer to increase or diminish the amount of covering as the weather increases or decreases in severity.

The chest-protector now in use is composed simply of one piece, or of two or more pieces permanently fastened together, which, While it serves the purpose yrequired `for a time, will, ulti'on removal from the person, subject the wearer to the danger oi taking cold from the sudden change; but in my invention this danger is obviated, by the combination of two or more thicknesses of chamois-skin, lianlnel, or other warm material, which may be suspended from the neck of the wearer by means of a tape, elastic baud, or other similar material.

A is the front covering for the chest, which should be made of chamois-skin, iiannel, or other warm material, and of a form similar to that shown in the drawing, which may be hung around Jthe neck oi' the wearer by means of an fand eyes, or other equivalent device for securing the diii'ereut thicknesses together in such a way that they can be readily detached, may be used.

The back piece B may also be composed of a like set of layers, d e, attached in a similar y manner, or may be of one piece, connected with the front piece A, as described, by means of an elastic band or other similar material. Studs may be used in this construction in place of and as the equivalentof buttons, or eyeletholes and screw-studs may be adopted iuplace of buttons and button-holes, care being taken to turn the point of the screw in such a direction that it will not scratch the iiesh of the wearer.

I claim as my invention- A chest-protector made up of two or more thicknesses of cloth or other suitable material, and provided with butt'ons and button-holes, or equivalent devices for `limiting said thicknesses together, substantially as hereinbefore set forth. I
