Specification of Letters Patent.
lPatented Aug. 29, IQIG.
Application led November 28, 1914. Serial No. 874,462.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ALLIsoN H. FLEM- ING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fairmont, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented a new and useful Garment-Supporter, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to garment supporters and more particularly to means, combined with a garment, whereby a belt used for supporting trousers, can be placed between the waistband of the garment and the wearer so as thus to be invisible, the same serving to properly support the trousers without gathering them about the waist and thus rendering them unsightly.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the invention has been shown.
In said drawings z-Figure l is a perspective view of a portion of a garment having the present improvements combined therewith. Fig. 2 is an enlarged section on line A-B Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a detail view of one of the supporting loops. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the stiffening plate used in connection with one of the loops.
Referrinfr to the figures by characters of reference (i: designates a garment having the usual waistband W secured therein. The present improvements comprise a series of preferably six loops l, 2 and 3, made of a suitable fabric folded to form a flat tube in which is arranged a thin stiffening plate 5 preferably formed of light resilient metal. This plate is substantially V-shaped and lits within the folded fabric as shown particularly in Fig. 2, said fabric being looped and having its ends inserted between the upper portion of the garment and the waistband W where they are secured by stitches.
It is to be understood that the ends of the loops can be readily inserted under the waistband of a garment already made simply by cutting some of the stitches along the lower edge of the waistband and then inserting the ends of the loop. Vhen the loop is thus positioned, the end of the stiflening plate 5 extends up to the waistband as shown in Fig. 2. As before indicated, it is preferred to use siX of these supporting loops, the two which are placed at the sides so as to rest upon the hips being broader than the other four which are placed at the sides of the front and back, respectively.
vWith loops arranged and constructed as described, a belt 6 of canvas or any other suitable material can be placed inside the garment and inserted through the loops and by then tightening this belt about the body of the wearer, the loops will be drawn toward the body, the stiifening plates 5 serving to prevent distortion of the loops and resulting in the proper support of the garment at the waist, without causing the waist portion of the garment to be gathered and thus rendered unsightly.
It will be be apparent that the supporter can be very cheaply made and can be added to garments without materially increasing the cost thereof.
l/Vhat is claimed is The combination with a garment having an interior waistband, of fabric loops permanently secured to and depending from said waistband, a stiffening loop combined with and housed within each of the fabric loops, said stifening loop being formed of resilient material, and being permanently connected to the waistband, and a belt slidably engaging and extending through the loops, said loops constituting means for supporting the waistband of the garment above the plane of the belt.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALLISON HOWARD FLEMING.
