Description

July 17, 1923. 1,462,054 H. TANGEE LEVEL Filed May 16. 1922 JWj 1 2 F913 Patented July 17, 1923.
HPATENT OFFICE.
HEDVIG TANG-EE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEVEL.
Application filed May 16, 1922. Serial No. 561,519.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HEDVIG Ta wan, a citizen of the United States, and resident of New York cit and State of ew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Levels, of which the following is a specification:
This invention relates to levels and the object of the invention is to provide a level with illuminating means for the gages or sights to enable the workman to use the level accurately in dark places.
More particularly this invention contemplates and has for its object the rovision of illuminatin means, such as an e ectric flashlight or poc et lamp adapted to be attached to a level for illuminating purposes as set forth.
Accordingly my invention is embodied in an attachment for levels comprising suitable supporting means secured to the level together with an electric pocket lamp arranged to be clamped to or attached to the said supportin means.
- In t e drawing accompanying this specification and illustrating the preferred form of m invention Figure 1 is a view of a level provided with an illuminating attachment embodying the invention. a
Figure 2 is an enlarged view of one end of the level showing the illuminating means attached thereto.
Fi re 3 is a side view of Figure 2 lookrom the left side thereof.
igure 4 is a top plan or end view of the level showing the light supporting or attachin means.
Figure 5 is a perspective view of the bracket which holds the pocket lamp.
Referring to Figure l the reference numeral 6 denotes a level of any usual or suitable size and construction having two circular holes 7, 7 adjacent the ends of the level,
in which holes are mounted the usual sights or gages 8, 8 for trying perpendiculars. A third sight or gage 9 for trying horizontals is mounted in a third opening 10 in the center of the level.
The numeral 11 denotes a support in the form of a plate having its edges bent to in the county of New York form books 12, 12 and said plate may be secured to the level as by screws 13, 13. The dotted squares 14, 14 in Figure 1 represent the several places where a support 11 may be mounted.
The illuminating means consists of an electric pocket lamp or flashlight 15 which is held by a bracket 16, Figure 5. The bracket comprises a hook member 17 adapted to be hooked into the hooks 12 of the support 11. The opposite end of the bracket 16 is bent to form a foot or base 18 against which the pocket lamp rests as seen in Figure 3. The foot is provided with a hole 19 for the lamp 20 of the flashlight. 21 is a spring member for clasping or clamping the lamp to the bracket.
, One or more lamp supports 11 may be secured to the level in the positions indicated. The lamp is inserted in the bracket 16 with the lamp proper or bulb 20 projecting through the opening 19, the lamp resting against the foot 18. The spring clamp 21 1s placed in such a. position on the bracket 16 that the switch 22 of the lamp remains uncovered for operation. The switch is not shown in Figure 3.
The lamp may be carried in the bracket separate from the level, but when desired or necessary the bracket 16 is hooked into the support 11 in a position such as is illustrated in Figure 3, for instance, so that when lighted the lamp will illuminate the gage near which the lamp is mounted.
The lamp, when attached to the level, does not interfere with the use thereof and materially assists in more accurate and convenient use of the level because of the ease with which the workman may read the illuminated gage.
The foot 18 of the bracket serves both as a stop for the lamp and as a protection for the bulb.
It will also be readily seen that changes or alterations in the details of the construction disclosed may readily be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claim.
I claim The combination with a level, of a device for illuminating the gages thereof, said devices comprising a rectangular supporting bent to form a foot at right angles thereto, 10 plate having two of its parallel sides bent said foot being provided with an aperture, to form hooks, and means for securing said and a spring member secured to said bracket plate to the level, a bracket plate having its and adapted to hold a flashlight in position one end portion bent back upon itself to with the lamp illuminating through the said form a hook member adapted to engage the aperture, said foot portion having an outer 15 hooks formed on said supporting plate for upwardl turned lip to prevent displacedetachably securing said bracket to the said ment of the said fiashli ht.
plate, the other end of said bracket being HI DVIG TAN GEE.
