A. B. SIMPSON BURGLAR ALARM Filed Feb. 1922 Patented July 10, 1923.
PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED B. SIMPSON, OF NOR-TH VERNON, INDIANA.
BURGLAR ALARM.
Application filed February 4, 1922.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED B. SrMPsoN,
a citizen. of the United States, residing at North Vernon, in the county of Jennings 6 and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Burglar Alarm, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to alarms, and more particularly to house or burglar alarms, the primary object of the invention being to provide means associated with the doors and windows of a building to complete a circuit to an alarm, when the same have been moved, by unauthorized persons. Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be positive in its operation, and one which may be readily and easily applied by persons unfamiliar with mechanics.
WViththe foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed, may be made within the Scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Referring to the drawing Figure 1 is a diagrammatical view of an alarm system constructed in accordance with the present invention,
Figure 2 is a fragmental sectional view through a door and frame, showing a switch as supported thereby.
Figure 3 is a rearv elevational view of the same.
Referring to the drawings in detail, the switch mechanism which is used in connection with a swinging closure, is indicated generally by the reference character 5, and
embodies a movable element 6 which carries suitable contact members adapted to be moved into engagement with contact members carried by the head 7 of the switch, the
structure being of the well known type.
Spring arms 8 have connection with the head 7 of the switch and are formed with coiled portions 9 adapted to accommodate the pin 10' which is shown as extending Serial No. 534,159.
therethrough. Having connection with the pin 10 are the staples 11 which are embedded in the frame of the closure to sup port the spring arms in proper relation with the hinged closure.
One end of one of the arms 8 extends laterally and overlies a portion of the frame, the extension beingindicated at 12, and shown as engaging the frame, so that movement of the head 7 will exert a tension on the coiled portions of the arms to hold the movable member 6 of the switch member into engagement with the hinged closure 18. A plate 16 is secured to one surface of the hinged closure 15 and. provides a wear surface for contacting with the movable memher 6 to complete a circuit through the switch member when the member 6 has been moved.
The switch member 5 is in circuit with the alarn'i it through the wires 17 and 18, the wires also being in circuit with the battery 19. In order that the alarm may be set to operate when the closure is moved to an open position, a controlling switch indicated at 20 is provided, which may be moved to control the operation of the alarm 13.
If the device is to be employed in connection with sliding closures, contact plates 21 and 22 are secured within the guideways of the frame, supporting the sliding closures.
These plates are in circuitwith the battery 19 through the wires 96 and will, when the circuit is completed thercthrough cause the sounding of the alarm 14:.
A sliding closure is indicated at 27 and carries a contact plate 28 adapted to connect the plates 21 and 22 to complete the circuit therethrough.
It might be further stated that the plate 28 is positioned on a sash so that when the sash is moved upwardly to open the same, the plate 28 moves to complete a circuit as described.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
In combination with a hinged closure, a signaling device comprising a hinge member including staples, a pin extending through the staples, said hinge member including spring arms having portions thereof coiled around the pin of said spring arlns having a In testimony that I claim the foregoing portion thereof contacting with the member as my own, I have hereto aflixed my sigma on which the hinge is mounted, a head havture in the presence of two Witnesses.
ing connection with the outer ends of the ALFRED B. SIMPSON spring arms, contact members inst-he head,
said hinged closure adapted to' engage the head to complete the circuit to the sierra.
Witnesses CHAS. FITZGERAL G. H. MoNNErT.
