Be it known that l,- lzfnx GoLDsToNE, a citizen of the United itates,` residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful improvements in lurglarA Alarms, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in burglar alarms referring particularly to the type designed to be applied to either a door or window.
lt is the object of this invention, among other things, to, provide a simplel and convenient alarm device that may be produced at the minimum cost, be readily applied to either a door or window and will sound an alarm as the result of the minimum opening movement of either said window or door.
To these and other ends my invention consists in the alarm device having certain details of construction vand combinations of parts as will be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the drawings in which like characters of reference designate like parts in the several figures:
Figure 1 is an elevation of a fragmentary7 portion of a door and its lzuljacerjt parts with my improved alarm device attached thereto;
Figure 2 is a plan view thereof the door and adjacent parts being in section;
Figure`3 is a similar plan view showing the relative arrangementsv of the parts for a door that opens outwardly; and
Figure 4 is a view illustrating my improved device connected with the upper and lower sashcs of a window frame, the sashes being shown in verticalsection.
ln the drawings 10 designates the bell which may be of any one of the common types well lmown to the art and is operated by a plunger 11 having a head 12 thereon. Connected with this bell by screws 13 is a separable plate 14. This plate, for convenience in attachment, is provided with two notches 15 through which project the screws` 13. Upon the opposite side of the plate is a slot 16 opening outwardly and a slot 17 that opens inwardly. IThis plate is lsaparably secured in position by the screws 18 that passthrough the slots 143 and 17. Both screws are preferably positioned beforethe plate 14 isi connected therewith by first engaging one of the screws 13 with the slot 16 and then using thisscrew as a pivot, swing the plate until the otherzscrew 13 enters the slot 17, then by turning the screws the plate is secured against movement.
As shown the opposite edges of the plate 14 occupy different planes, see Figures 2, 3 and 4. As a result of this shaping` of the plate one edge thereof is in parallel relation with the bell and the other with the member to which it issecured.
ln Figures 1 and 2 ythis plate is secured to the door frame 19, in Figure 3 to the door 20 and in'Figure 4to the upper plate 21 of the lower window sash 22.
The numeral 23 designates a lever, having thereon a cam lug 24 rprovided with two cam faces 25 and 26 and the outer end terminating in a stop 27. Illhis lever is pivotally connected with. a plate 28 upon the stud 29 having a nut 30 threaded thereon, either substantially midway between the ends thereof as shown in Figures 1, 2 and 3 or near one end, -as shown in Figure 4. Nut 30 has the usual polygonal portion whereby it may be rotated with a wrench and also with one or more openings 31 whereby it may be rotated by a pin, if the quarters are cramped for a wrench, which might occur when the same is attached to a window frame. f 4
The plate 23 is secured in position in any convenient manner, the means herein shown being the screws 32. A stop 33-iixed in the plate 28 limits the rotary movement of the lever 23 so thatin one position it occupies a position at substantially a right angle to the plate.`
A convenient means for manipulating the lever 23 is provided by a knurled button 34 threaded onto a screw 35, which is separably connected with the lever 23. rlhe diameter of screw 35 is substantially the saine as that of stud 29, so that the 'relativevpositions of the stud and screw may be interchanged, in which case the button 34 occupies a positionA near the outer end of the lever as in Figures 1 to 3 inclusive, and substantially midway between its end as in Figure 4. ln Figures 1 and 2 my device is shown as applied for operation in connection with a door that opens inwardly. A burglar alarm comprising an alarm bell actuated through a push mechanism; a plate for securing said alarm bell in a fixed position, constructed with tWo slotted edge portions that occupy different relative planes, the slots in one edge being substantially parallelwith each other and the slots in the opposite edge being` at substantially connected With a part other than that to -Which the alarm bell is connected; a levermovably connected With said second plate; and a cam member connected With said lever and duringits movement engaging' said push mechanism and actuating said bell.
