F. T. CONLEY INDIVIDUAL SANITARY TOOTHBRUSH HOLDER FILED FEB 2] Patented Feb. e. 1923.
FREDERICK '1. COWLEY, OF
INDIVIDUAL SANITARY TENT @FFWE.
osron, MASSACHUSETTS.
TOOTHBRUSH HpLDEn.
Application filed'February 21, 1922. serial No. 538,195.
' To all whom it may concern Be it known that'li, FREDERICK T. CONLEY, a citizen of the United States, residin at Boston, inthe county of Suffolk and tate of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Individual Sanitary Toothbrush Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved tooth brush holder, the object of the invention' being to providea convenient, hygienic, individual toothbrush holder which is provided with a cover and means to position the cover in a horizontal or open position and in a substantially vertical or closed position.
, The object of the invention is further' to provide a device of the character set forth in which the cover may be opened and closed by the tooth brush.
The invention further has for its object to provide a device of the character described which embodies also a rack adapted to receive a plurality of individual tooth brush holders.
A further object of the invention is toprovide a device, of the character set forth which can be made from sheet celluloid so that it may be very ornamental and hygienic and which can be washed and cheaply manufactured.
The invention consists'in the combination and arrangement of parts set forth in thesame supported upon a rack.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a sectional elevation .taken' on I line '3-3 of Fig. 2. In each of the figures 1, 2 and 3 a tooth brush is shown in connection with the deviceof' my invention.
Fig. 4 is a sectional elevation similarv to Fig. 3 but showing the closure opened and the tooth brush dotted in the position it would assume when bein inserted in, the holder and when operating to close the closure. 3
Fig. 5 is an underneath plan ofthe' tooth brush holder. 4 Fig. 6 is an enlarged detailsection taken on line 66 of Fig. 2. y
Fig. -7 is a similar section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 2,
. Like numerals refer to like parts throughout the several views of the drawings.
In the drawings, 10 is-a rack adapted to receive a plurality of individual tooth brush holders and consisting of a back 11 provided with oppositely disposed ends 12 and out out to form an open space 13, the ends 12 each being provided with an ear 14 having a hole 15 therein through which a fastening devicemay be inserted in order to fasten the rack to a suitable support. Flanges T6 and 17 extend downwardly and upwardly respectively from the upper and lower edges of the rack and are inclined out" wardly therefrom, thus providing spaces 18 to receive flanges 19 and 20 which project upwardly and downwardly respectively.
from the individual tooth brush tacle 21. s
The receptacle '21 consists of a back 22, a top 23, a bottom 24 and two sides 25 and 26 and is preferably formed of celluloid sheet material. The front edges 27 of the sides 25 and 26 are inclined at an angle to the back 22. A; closure 28 is hinged at 29 to the top 23 and that portion of the closure which constitutes a hinge on the upper edge thereof is provided with a projection 30 which projects upwardly from the ear 31 on said closure which constitutes the hinge recepportion thereof. Longitudinally extending flanges 28' are provided upon opposite sides of theYclosure28 and these are intended to lap over the o posite sides 25 and 26 0f the receptacle wh n the parts are in the relative ositions illustrated in Figures 1, 2 and 3. ars 32 and 33 providedon the front edge of the top 23 constitute the other por tions of the hinge and a pintle 34 extends through the ears 31, 32 and 33 thus completing the hinge portion of the device. A
right angle arm 35 extends from the inner face of the closure 28- and constitutes an ex- .tension of the-ear portion 31 of said closure;
The free end 36 of said angle arm projects approximately' at right angles to the body portion 37 of said arm and when the tooth brush is being placed in the receptacle, the
upper end of the tooth brush engages the arm 35 and pushes the closure 28 from the position shown in F ig. 4 to, that shown in Fig. 3. The lower end 24 of the'tooth brush receptacle is provided with a slot-38 to re, ceive the narrow portion of the handle 39.
In using the device, the rack is fastened to. the wall and the individual tooth brush holders are slid into it as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3 wherein the flanges 19 and project into the spaces'18 between the flanges 16 and 17 and the main body portion of the rack, or, if desired, the tooth brush holder itself may be fastened to the wall by fastening devices inserted through the holes provided in the flanges 19 and 20.
Assuming the closure 28 to be in opened and approximately horizontal position as illustrated in Fig. 4, the back of the tooth brush is pushed against the angle arm 35 and the narrow portion of the handle 39 is inserted in the slot 38, thus causing the closure to assume a closed and approximately vertical position as in Figs. 1 and 3.
\V hen the tooth brush is in this position it will be understood that it is supported by the handle in the slot 38 and the closure 28 is at that time locked by the projection 3() bearing against the front edge of the top 23. \Vhen the tooth brush is removed-from the receptacle, the parts assume the positions illustrated in F ig. 4 and the closure 28 is locked in the opened position as illustrated .in said figure by the projection extending underneath'the top 23 and contacting with the inner face thereof.
The top 23 and the ear 31 on the closure 28 being made of celluloid are resilient in their characteristics and, therefore the parts mentioned spring slightly to allow the closure 28 to be moved from a horizontal to a vertical position or vice versa. The sides 25 and 26 are provided with perforations 4:0 as illustrated in Figures 1 and 4.
I claim l. A tooth brush holder having, in combination, a receptacle for the bristle end of a tooth brush having an open front, a closure for the front of said receptacle hinged to the upper end of said receptacle to swing downwardly over said open end from an approxi mately horizontal position to an approximately vertical position and a projection on the, upper edge of said closure adapted to" engage the under surface of said upper end and hold said closure in an opened position.
2. A toothbrush holder having, in combination, a receptacle for the bristle end of a tooth brush having an open front, a closure for the front of said receptacle hinged to the upper end of said receptacle to swing downwardly over said open end from an approximately horizontal position'to an approximately vertical position and a projec tion on the upper edge of said closure adapted to engage the front edge of said upper end and hold said closure in a closed posination, a receptacle for the bristle end of a tooth brush having an open front, a closure for the front of said receptacle hinged to the upper end of said receptacle to swing downwardly over said open end from an approximately horizontal position to an approximatel vertical position and an arm" projecting inwardly from the inner face of said closure whereby said closure may be closed by means of said tooth brush. 7
4:. A tooth brush holder having, in combination, a receptacle for the bristle end of a tooth brush having an open front, a closure for the front of said receptacle hinged to the upper end of said receptacle to swing downwardly over said open end from an approximately horizontal position to an approximately vertical position and a right angle arm projecting inwardly from theinner face of said closure adjacent the top whereby said closure may be closed by means of a tooth brush.
A tooth brush holder having, in comb-ination, a receptacle for the bristle end of a tooth brush having an open front, a closure for the front of said receptacle hinged to the upper end of said receptacle to swing downwardly over said open end from an approximately horizontal position to an approximately vertical. position and a projection on the upper edge of said closure adapted to engage the under surface of said upper end whereby said closure may be held upwardly in an opened position, said projection also being adapted to engage the front edge of said upper end whereby said closure may be held in a closed position.
6. A tooth brush holder having, in combination, a receptacle for the bristle end of a tooth brush having an open front and co1i1 prising a back, upper end, lower end and receptacle hinged to said upper end to swing downwardly over said open end from an approximately horizontal position to an apwitnesses.
