To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that l, Jar ms l3. FnoMaN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburgh and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Baby Car riages, of which the following is a specification.

This invention which relates to baby carriageshas for its objects the provision of, first, improvementswhereby the body may be suspended from a main frame, or, from a special attachment when it is desired that the body he used as a bouncing basket as, for instance, when the carriage is at rest; second, improved demountable attachments and suspension coil springs which may be applied to a main frame when it is desired to convert the carriage into a bouncing or holder; third, a novel combination of main suspending frame, body or basket having suspension bails or handles for detachable connection to the frame, and supplemental improved spring suspension means whereby on the release of the bails or handles, said spring suspension means may be arranged to solely suspend the body or basket.

lVly present improvements enable the baby carriage to be used in the ordinary manner wheeling the child with adaptability to absorb the ordinary shocks or jars, or, to be specially spring suspended so that the child can bounce or agitate the body and obtain exercise and enjoyment in that fashion, or, the body may be entirely removed and used as a baby basket or carriage.

In my application Ser. No. 527082 filed January 5, 1922, I have set forth and claimed so much of the present invention as has to do with the main frame, the bails or handles, and the manner of detachably suspending the body from said main frame. lln the present application these features are shown and described and, in addition,- there is combined therewith means whereby the body may be spring suspended as hereinbefore set forth, thus enabling the carriage to be converted at will from the ordinary suspension set forth in my other application, to the special spring suspension.

y improvements may be carried out in the form of a separate attachment which can be put on or taken 0d the carriage and basket I prefer to embody the invention in that manner but it is to be understood that I do not limit the invention to the use of attachable and detachable supplemental suspension means as it is possible to make it as a fixed part of the frame and simply to disconnect the springs, when said bouncing attachment is not in use.

My improvements are not necessarily limited to use in connection with baby carriages as the essential features of the invention may be embodied in porch beds, invalid beds, porch swings, hammocks, toys and analogous devices.

The particular improvements represented by the various features and combinations of my invention are set forth fully hereinafter and recited in the appended claims. The showing of the invention is to be considered as illustrative, instead of restrictive, of the scope thereof as modifications may be resorted to.

The body is shown at 1 and it is preferably provided with a hood 2 although the hood forms no part of the present invention nor does the connection 3 between the hood and body, said connection being set forth and claimed in my application Ser. No. 527084 filed January 5, 1922.

The running gear and handle may be of any desired form or construction.

The body 1 is supported by a framev 4: which, in the form shown, lies substantially in a single plane and is suitably connected to the running gear.

I wish it to be understood, however, that I do not limit myself to the particular frame shown but whatever frame l is used, it is provided with springy or resilient extensions 5 whichsupport the body 1 and absorb to a considerable degree the shocks so that the child rides comfortably. The extensions 5 are provided with sockets 6, 6 in their ends. Detachably received in the sockets 6 are ll-shaped expanding couplings 7 formed of springy metal having arc-shaped upper parts 8.

Handles or bails 9 which are pivoted or jointed at 10 to pieces 11 on the body 1 are provided with tubular or cylindrical parts 12 which are inserted in the parts 8 of conplings 7 and the aforesaid couplings 7 are forced downwardly into sockets 6, whereb the bails'swingingly suspend the body' 1 from the extensions 5 and yet permit bodily detachment of the body by simply drawing the couplings 7 out of the sockets 6.

The springy supports or extensions 5 and the joints 10 and rockable parts 12 afford a means for absorbing shocks and allow'movement up and down and lengthwise.

As thus far described, the invention is substantially the same as that set forth and claimed in myapplication, Ser. No. 527082.

In combination with the foregoing improvements and as constituting novel additions thereto and improvements thereon, I provide brackets or hangers 13 which are preferably of some resiliency and whose lower ends are detachably inserted in the sockets 6 their upper ends being coiled as at 14. C'oil springs 15 are connected at 16 to the coiled at their lower ends which are connectedto the pivots 10.

The body 1 may be suspended from the adapted to be couplings 7 for ordinary purposes but if it is desired to completely detach the body from the extensions 5, this may be done and the handles 9 used to carry the body from place to place or to suspend it in a train, car, automobile, or other location, thus converting the body 1 into a baby basket.

When it is desired to use the body as a bouncing basket, the brackets or hangers 13 are inserted in the sockets 6 the bails or handles 9 are disconnected from the couplings 7 and said handles are then allowed to freely depend as shown in Fig. 1. The eyes 17 of the coil springs 15 are then engaged with the pivots 10. The body 1, as thus arranged, is then wholly supported by the springs 15 which, with the springy parts or coiled ends 14, suspend the body so that the child may bounce it up and down at will.

By lengthening and strengthening the frame 4: and the extensions 5, the principle of the invention may be carried out in a porch bed, invalid bed, porch swing, etc. In lieu-of the body 1, a hammock or cot-shaped frame may be used.

It is within the spirit of my invention to have the hangers 13 connected in other ways to the extensions 5 and," except where limited in the claims, modification in this respect may be considered as being included.

1. In a baby carriage, the combination with a supporting frame, of a body having detachable connections to the supporting frame whereby it may be suspended from said frame or disconnected therefrom, and spring suspension means carried by said frame adapted for suspending the body independently of its connection to the frame, whereby said body may be suspended in either of the two ways aforesaid.

2. In a baby carriage, the combination with a supporting frame, of a body having detachable connections to the supporting frame whereby it may be suspended from said frame or disconnected therefrom, and pairs of coil springs connected to the aforesaid frame and. adapted for use to suspend said body in lieu of its suspension by the detachable connections aforesaid.

3. In a baby carriage, the combination with a supporting frame, of a body having detachable connections to the supporting frame whereby it may be directly suspended from said frame or disconnected therefrom, brackets or hangers dctachably connected to said frame, and spring suspension means independent of the aforesaid detachable connections whereby the body may be suspended from said brackets indepeinlently of its suspension by said detachable connections.

4. In a baby carriage, the combination with a supporting frame, of a body having detachable connections to the supporting frame whereby it may be suspended from said frame or disconnected therefrom, brackets or hangers having coiled or springy parts and provided with means for their detacln able connection to the supporting frame, and coil springs adapted for suspending the body from the coiled or springy parts of the brackets or hangers.

5. In a baby carriage, the combination of a supporting frame of a body having detachable connections to the supporting frame whereby it may be suspended from said frame or disconnected therefrom, brackets or hangers haying detachable connections to the supporting frame and provided with coiled or springy parts, and pairs of diverging coil springs connected to the coiled parts of the brackets and provided with means for their detachable connection to the body whereby the body may be suspended by said coil springs.
