6 Claims. (Cl. -98) The present invention relates to a convertible use in carrying infants and children in automobiles.

An object of the invention is to provide an accessory of the character indicated which is of simple construction and therefore readily manufactured, but which, nevertheless, is comfortable and reliable in use.

Another object of the invention is the provision of a convertible bassinet and seat which may be quickly and conveniently converted from a bassinet suitable for the use of infants to a seat or chair suitable for the use of small children.

An illustrative embodiment of the invention is shown in the accompanying drawings, wherein:

Referring to the drawings, the convertible bassinet and seat of the present invention comprises an open. generally rectangular, main frame of metal rod or strip stock to which a textile hammock member 2 is secured by ahem formed around the edge of the hammock member. The textile hammock member is of sufficient fullness to form a pocket or sack, as shown. The main frame is extensible in length in a manner to be described in reater detail hereinafter.

The main frame is formed by a pair of U- shaped frame sections ndicated generally at 3 and 4. The frame sections 3 and 4 have their free ends connected together by joints 5 and 6, shown in detail in Fig. 5. Referring to Fig. 5, each joint comprises a clip I, U-shaped in crosssection, which is secured to the frame section 3 by a rivet 8 and supports the frame section 4 by means of a rivet or pin 9. It will be observed that the connection between the frame sections 3 and 4 is such that they cannot be moved upwardly with respect to each other from the position shown in Fig. 1 but that either frame section may be swung downwardly about the pin 9 with respect to the other frame section. The textile hammock member 2 may be cut away as indicated at H) and I2 to expose the joints and the adjacent parts of the frame sections.

The legs ma be swung about their pivots into a vertical position, in which they support the bassinet in spaced relation to the floor or seat of the car, or into a horizontal position to permit the device to be conveniently carried or stored.

The leg 14 is provided on each side with a folding brace 22 connected at its lower end to the leg l4 by rivet 24 and connected at its upper end to the side of the mainframe section 4 by a rivet 26 at a point spaced from the rivet I 8. The braces 22 are jointed at 28 to permit them to be folded to permit inward and upward movement of leg l4 and are provided with stops 30 (Fig. 4) and with projections 32 and depressions 33, struck out of the metal of the braces 22, to limit movement of the parts of the brace 22 about the joint as to a single direction.

The leg I 6 is provided with similar braces 34 and 36 which may be folded in the same manner as the braces 22.

The forward end of the frame member 4 is adapted for movement with respect to the remainder of the frame 4. As shown, the forward end of the frame is formed by a separate U- shaped member 38 whose legs 40 extend rearwardly and'are provided with slots 42 for the reception of the rivets ill of the leg l4. Additional rivets 44 lying entirely beneath the hem of the textile member 2 are passed through the slots 42 to prevent swinging movement of the extensible end member 38 w th respect to the remainder of the frame 4. The slots 42 are of a size to permit free sliding movement of rivets l8 and 44 therein. The member 38 is shown in Fig. 1 in partly extended position, from which position it may be moved inwardly or outwardly.

The textile hammock member 2 is provided with a strap 46 and a correspondingly positioned strap 48 having on its free end a buckle 50 for the reception of the free end of the strap 46. These straps 46 and 48 may be joined together over an infant in the hammock 2 to hold the infant safely in position during travel of the car.

The rear transverse member of the frame member 3 carries a pair of books 64 and 66 for engagement with the back of an automobile seat. These hooks are pivoted in clips 68 and respectively, which clips are pivoted on the frame member 3. This pivotal connection may be made by means of rivets I2 and 14 or by means, such as a bolt and wing nut, permitting the hooks to be detached.

A detachable ball 16, formed of wire, has its outwardly-turned ends 18 and 80 hookedinto apertures provided in the vertical members of the legs l6.

For use with the device when converted into its seat form, a removable stretcher 82 is provided adjacent the joints 5 and B in the main frame as shown. The stretcher 82 is provided atone end At its other end it is formed with an upwardly turned portion 86 merging into a horizontal portion 88 to which is connected a depending portion 90. The free ends of the portions 90 and 84 are swaged or riveted over, as shown at B5 in Fig. 6, so that they are of a slightly larger diameter than the major portion of the end portions 90 and 84 of the stretcher 82.

The stretcher 82 is held in position between the side members of the main frame by means of a pair of identical clips 92 and 94 secured to frame section 3 so as to provide an aperture for the reception of the ends of the stretcher. The clip 92, as shown in Fig. 5, comprises a curved central section 96 and end portions 98 and 99 disposed in a common plane and secured to the frame member 3 by the rivet 8 and a rivet I02. The central section 96 is spaced from the side member 3 just sufiiciently to permit the enlarged upper end of the portion 84 to be forced into the space between the clip and the side member of the frame. The clip 94 serves in the same manner to secure the downwardly turned portion 90, at the other end of the stretcher 82. A strap 0 is stitched to the hammock member 2 adjacent the forward edge of the seat portion of the chair and is adapted to be passed upwardly over the stretcher 82 andthen downwardly and to have its free'end secured in the buckle H2.

Referring to Fig. 1, a strap for further assisting in holding the child in the chair is attached to the textile member 2 and comprises a strap member I04 and a similar member I06 carrying a buckle I08 on its free end.

Metal arm members H4 and I I6 may be provided on the inner surfaces of the side members of the frame member 3.

For carrying small infants in the automobile the accessory is converted to its bassinet form,

The bassinet may be placed on the floor of the car but preferably is placed with the legs l4 resting on the rear seat and the hooks hooked over the top of the back of the front seat pad may be placed in the. bottom of the hammock 1 2 if desired. car, and the infant is safelysupported so that there is no danger that he will be'thrown or bounced against any hard metal parts of the car or of the accessory under any ordinary riding conditions. The accessory in the form shown in Fig. 1 may be used generally as a bassinet, in addition to its use with an automobile.

If the accessory is to be used for a child large enough to sit up alone, shown in Fig. 2 and may then be used as a seat or chair for general use. It may be placed on the floor or the seat of the car when the child is to be carried in the car. The bail 76 may be hooked into the slot between the seat back and the cushion to secure the seat in place in the car. The child may be strapped in the seat by use of the straps IM'and I06, and the strap H0 may be passed about the stretcher 82 to further protect the child from sliding forwardly out of the seat.

The accessory may be folded flat for shipment or storage by folding the frame sections 3 and 4 into the relative positions shown in Fig. 1 and then folding the legs I4 and I6 inwardly and upwardly. The hooks 6t and 66 are folded into the general plane of the main frame by suitable adjustment of the clips 68 and 10 on the frame section 3 and of the hooks 64 and 66 within the clips 68 and I0.

I claim:

1. A convertible bassinet and child's chair comprising an extensible, open, sectional frame including two U-shaped members hinged at their open ends and turned in towards one another in a common horizontal plane, said hinges comprising, joints connecting one section of the frame to the other section of the frame for movement of the frame sections downwardly only from the position in which they lie in said common horizontal plane, one of said U-shaped members having extensible side portions on both sides near the closed end of the U whereby the U may be extended in said common horizontal plane a hammock member connected at its edges to said frame and suspended therefrom, and legs for supporting said frame connected thereto in the fixed and not extensible part of the frame.

A convertible bassinetand child's chair com prising an open sectional frame including two U-shaped members hinged at their open ends and turned in towards one another in a common horizontal plane, said hinges comprising, joints connecting one frame section to the other frame section for movement of the frame sections downwardly only from the relative position in which they lie in said common horizontal plane, one of said U-shaped members having extensible side portions on both sides near the closed end of the U whereby the U may be extended in said common horizontal plane a textile hammock member connected at its edges to said frame and suspended therefrom, one of said frame sections havis converted to the form aaeaaat ing means providing an aperture adjacent each joint, and a stretcher connecting the sides of said frame section and having its ends positioned in said apertures.

A convertible bassinet and childs chair suitable for use in an automobile comprising an open sectional frame, joints connecting one frame section to the other frame section for movement of the frame sections downwardly only from the relative position in which they lie in a common horizontal plane, a hammock member connected at its edges to said frame and suspended therefrom, a U-shaped leg on each frame section having its free ends connected to the section adjacent the outer end thereof, said legs and frame sections being so shaped and proportioned that the lower portions of said legs are positioned adjacent each other when said frame sections are moved about said joints into positions approximately at right angles to each other, and a latch on one leg for detachably connecting said legs.

A convertible bassinet and childs chair comprising an open frame formed by a pair of U- shaped frame sections, one of said sections being extensible in length, a pair of joints each connecting a free end of one frame section to a free end of the other frame section for movement of the frame sections downwardly from the relative position in which they lie in a common horizontal plane, a hammock member connected at its edges to said frame and suspended therefrom, a U- shaped leg on each frame section having its free ends connected to the section adjacent the outer end thereof, said legs and frame sections being so shaped and proportioned that the lower portions of said legs are positioned adjacent each other when said frame sections'are moved about said joints into positions approximately at right angles to each other, and a latch on one leg for detachably connecting said legs.

5, A convertible bassinet and childs chair comprising an open frame formed by a pair of U- shaped frame sections, means for extending one of said frame sections in length in the plane of said frame section, a pair of joints each connecting a free end of oneframe section to a free end of the other frame section for movement of the frame sections downwardly only from the relative position in which they lie in a common horizontal plane, a textile hammock member connected at its edges to said frame and suspended therefrom, one of said frame sections having means providing an aperture adjacent each joint, and a stretcher connecting the sides of said frame section and having its ends positioned in said apertures.

6. A convertible bassinet and childs chair suitable for use in an automobile comprising an open frame formed by a pair of U-shaped frame sections, one of said sections being extensible in length, a pair of joints each connecting a free end of one frame section to a free end of the other frame section for movement of the frame sections downwardly only from the relative position in which they lie in a common horizontal plane, one of said frame sections having an aperture adjacent each joint, and a stretcher connecting the sides of said frame section and having its ends positioned in said apertures, a hammock member connected at its edges to said frame and suspended therefrom, a U-shaped leg on each frame section having its free ends connected to the section adjacent the outer end thereof, said legs and frame sections being so shaped and proportioned that the lower portions of said legs are positioned adjacent each other when said frame sections are moved about said joints into positions approximately at right angles to each other, and a latch on one leg for detachably connecting said legs.
