snnr Ain) DESK 'STRUCTURE i Application sied iviay i., 1920.' serial no'. 378,047.
To all whom it may concern:
`Be itknown that I, GEORGE M. HANEY, a citizen 'of kthe United States, residing at Grand Rapids, in the county of Kent rand State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Seat andk Desk btructures, of which the following is a specification. v
The present invention relates to seat and desk structures; and its object is, gener# ally, to provide an improved structure wherein alseat `and a desk or table, severally adjustable, are mounted on the same support; and more particularly, to provide improved means forthus mounting and adjusting the desk or table; and further, to provide improved means for thus mounting and adjusting the seat;` and, further, toprovide improved means "for mounting ther support on a suitablek pedestal.A
These and any other objec'tshereinafter appearing are attained -by, and the invention finds preferable embodiment in, the structure hereinafter particularly described and illustrated by the `accompanying'drawings, in which: s l -I f Figure 1 isv a side' View. of a structure combining a desk or table portion and a seat portion;
Figure 2 is a bottoinvplan View of the seat-supporting arm of the same (enlarged),
showing the supporting post of the struc-v ture in horizontal section taken on line 2 2 of Figure 1; y f
Figure 3 is' a transverse sectional view of said arm taken on line 3 3 of Figure 2; i
Figure 4 is a central vertical section of said post, its pedestal, and interior parts;
Figure 5 is a horizontal `sectional view of the same taken on line 5 5 of Fig ure 4; v
Figure 6 is a vertically sectional view of certain parts taken on line 6 6 of Fig-4 y ure 1;
Figure 7 is a transverse sectional. view of the table or desk portion taken on the supporting posts diainetrical plane; h
Figure 8 is a horizontally sectional view of the same takeny on line. 8 8 of Figure 7; Y
'Figure 9 is a vertically sectional view of certain partsv taken on line 9 9 of Figure 7; and
Figure 10 is a horizontally sectional view of the same --taken on"linev10 10 of Fig-v ure 9. f I f In f the embodiment of the invention chosen for illustration by the drawings and for detailed description in the body'of this specification, a structure having a seat forv the person using the `desk before* and a desk for the person using the seat behind`.(such'l as are `commonly employed in schoolsand the'like) is shown. A supporting hollow or--tubular post-1, circular in cross `section and rof. the same diameterthroughout,` is mounted Ona suitable pedestal 2 provided with an upwardlyextending hollow memv` ber 3, llongitudinally split aty 4:- and adapted to be received into the"lower end'of the A plug 5, circular in cross section,
post 1. is adapted to be driven downwardlyk into the upper end of the member -3 to'expandthe saine into clamping engagement with the inner surface of the post, said `plug being tapered downwardly or the bore of t the member?) being gradually enlarged upwardly, or both asshownfin Figure'li, so
that the plug exerts a wedging actionr on the member 3 to thus expand the same. The seat 6 is -mounted* on asupporting-arm, designated generally 7 comprising lateral sections 8, 9, severally connected to the under side of the seat as by screws 10 passing' through the iianges 11 of said sections.k These sections are fastened together adjacent their connection to the seat, by bolts 12; and the arm. is clamped to the post 1, bv the bolt 13 extending through the sections intermediate the post and their con-r nection to the seat, and by the bolt 14 on the opposite side of said post. A clearance at 15 between the portions of the sections adjacent the post 1 permits such portions to be sprung into clamping engagement with vthe post under the action of the'bolts` 13, 14. The inwardly extending spurs 16y of the sections 8, 9, are adapted to contact and preferably to bite into the post 1 in the clamping engagement of these sections therewith to more securely retain the arm 7 in its clamped position. It will be seen that the seat may be raised or lowered oi' turned on the post 1 to ak desired position, whereupon the arm. nia-y be clamped therein as described. i
The desk portion, designated generally 17, has a table 18 and a vertical portion 19. Thesupporting post 1 passes through lthe ioo llO
shelf 20 of the desk portion and is adjustably clamped to said portion by the following means:
A member 21 is secured as by the screw 22 to the under side of the table 18 and extends downwardly into the hollow post. Means, as the threaded bolt 23 extends through this member and through the wall of the post, there being a suitable orifice in one and a suitable vertically extending` slot in the other for receiving this bolt;y
Figures 9 andy 10. The desk portion Amay beclamped to the postbyiollowing additional means: a stirrup 30 is provided, and located below the bolt 23, through whose ears 31 bolts 32 extend on opposite sides of the post, and through the vertical portion 19 of the table or deskportion, whereby the post 1 maybe clamped betweenthe stirrup and said vertical portion. Side pieces 33 having concave surfaces 34 may be secured to the inner surface of this vertical portion to receive the arcuate surface of the post as particularly shownin Figure 8. It will beseen that the desk or table portion 17 may be moved up or down or turnedk on the post to desired position and thereupon clamped in such position.
The invention being intended to be pointed out in the claims, is not to be limited to or by details of construction of the particular embodiment thereof illustrated by the drawings or hereinbefore described.
I claim:
1. Ina structure of the character described; a post; a seat; a seat-supporting arm comprising lateral sections severally connected to the seat; means adjacent the connection of said sections to the seat for fastening said sections together; means for clamping` the post between said sections.
2. In a structure of the character de-y scribed; a post; a seat; a seat-supporting arm comprising lateral sections severally connected to the seat; means adjacent the connection of said sections to the seat for fastening said sections together; means intermediate the seat and the post for ycla-mping the post between Vsaid sections; means on the opposite side ot the post for clamping the ypost between said sections.
3. In a structure of the character described; a post; a seat; a seat-supporting arm comprising lateral sections severally connected to the seat, at least one of said sections having an inwardly extending spur adapted to contact with the post in the assembled position of the parts; means adjacent the connection of said sections to the seat for fastening said sections together; means for clamping the post between said sections. i
ln testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand at Grand Rapids, Michigan, this 27th day of April 1920.
- dnoiaeis M. HANEY.
