Be it known that I, Cor: n-LiU: 1i. Bran son, of the city of Toronto, in the county of York, Province of ()ntario, Canada, a citizen of the United States of .ftmerica, have invented ertain new and useful Improvements in Fuel-Saving Attachments for Furnaces, of which the following is spec} fication.
This invention relat s particularly to de vices adapted 'for use in connection with hot air furnaces to check and steady the draft and effect a saving in fuel. and my object is to provide a device for this purpose which is particularly adapted for use with furnaces in which the smoke pipe comes off from the furnace at a low level and with which therefore only a fuel saver of comparatively small height is adapted to be used.
I attain my object by means of the constructions hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which- Fig. l is a vertical longitudinal section of a fuel saving attachment constructed in accordance with my invention;
Fig. 2 a front elevation of the device;
Fig. 3 a vertical longitudinal section of a modification of the device; and
F 4. a sectional plan view of the modification of the device.
In the drawings like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different figures.
l is a closed substantially rectangular casing, provided, however, with a bottom. 2 inclined from one end towards the other. On top of the casing adjacent each end is formed an opening 3,- which openings, by means of suitable collars 4, are connected with a smoke pipe 5 adapted for connection to the outlet moke pipe of a furnace and a, smoke pipe 14 adapted for connection to a chimney. When it is desirable to provide for direct draft these pipes are connected by a pipe section 15.
In the pipe 15 is located a damper 6, which, when opened, permits the products of combustion to travel directly through the pipe 15, and, when closed, causesthe products of combustion to enter and pass through the casing.
Located within the casing are a series of transverse partitions 7 extending alternately from the top and bottom of the casing so as to form a tortuous passageway for the products of com 'rustion through the casing. As 'th.-. products of combustion both enter and leavethe casing at the top, an odd number of these transverse partitions must be employee. In the drawings I show three of these partitions and it will be noted that the partition which reaches the bottom of the casing is provided with a lower portion 8 hinged to the upper part of the partition, so that the part 8 forms a damper which may occupy the position shown in Fig. l or which may be swung up as shown in Fig. The hinging of this damper serves a double purpose, as it may be swung up to leave the bottom clear so that accumulated dust may be readily scraped down to the lower end, and when swung up it permits the products of combustion to pass directly along the bottom of the casing so that the path of the products of combustion is materially shortened. It is thus possible to obtain three different degrees of draft, a direct draft when the damper 6 is opened, a. partial checking of the draft when the damper 8 is swung up, and a full checking when the damper 8 is closed against the bottom 2.
Intermediate degrees of checking are also possible by opening the damper 8 more or less.
To enable the dust and dirt accumulating in the device to be removed, I provide in the end of the casing adjacent the lower end of the bottom 2 an opening closed by a suitable slide 9. The opening shown preferably extends right down to the bot tom so that a scraper may be drawn down over the bottom and through the opening.
It is evident that the capacity of the device may be increased without increasing its height by increasing the length of the casing and using a larger number of transverse partitions.
In Fig. at I show a modification of the device specially adapted for use where there is only a very narrow space between the furnace and the chimney. In this form an opening 10 is formed in the side of the casing at one end and the other end is in communication with a flue 13 which. extends along the casing and is provided with an outlet 11 preferably in alinement with the opening 10. A damper controlled opening 12 is formed between the flue and the casing in alinement with the said opening. Direct draft may be obtained by opening this damper, which when the damper is closed the course of the products of combustion is through the casing as in the other form shown and then through the flue 13.
What I claim as my invention is 2- 1. In a fuel saving attachment, the com bination of a casing having an opening at each end of its top portion, adapted for communication with a smoke pipe, the bottom of the casing sloping from one end to the other; and a plurality of transverse partitions in said casing forming a tortuous passageway between said openings.
