  • This invention relates to boiler furnaces, and has for its principal object to provide such a construction that combustion of the gases be practically complete without materially reducing or interfering with the draft. This is accomplished in the present instance by providing partitions with passageways and certain devices which operate to deflect and divide the burning gases and to maintain the movementof the gases, during combustion, closely adjacent to the boiler. BOILER FURNACE.

Be it known that I, EMIL lVnYnnMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boiler Furnaces, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to boiler furnaces, and has for its principal object to provide such a construction that combustion of the gases be practically complete without materially reducing or interfering with the draft. This is accomplished in the present instance by providing partitions with passageways and certain devices which operate to deflect and divide the burning gases and to maintain the movementof the gases, during combustion, closely adjacent to the boiler. VVhile the construction to be described relates to a return tubular boiler furnace, the improvement may be applied to various types of furnaces.
The invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as described herein and claimed, and as illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein,

Referring now to the drawing for a more particular description, numeral 6 indicates a cylindrical, tubular boiler of conventional type provided, as usual. with a furnace wall 7, the fire chamber. below the front end of the boiler being indicated at 8, and a smoke stack being indicated at 9.
I provide, transversely of the boiler and adjacent to the fire chamber a partition 10, said partition being provided with opposed passageways 11 at the sides of the boiler, and rearwardly of the partition 10 I provide a second partition 12 having a single passageway 1.3 disposed in a plane inwardly of the sides of and immediately below the boiler.
At 1 1, rearwardly of the passageway 13, is indicated an apertured baffle-plate having a longitudinal curvature conforming to and preferably engagin the curved wall of the boiler, said plate being provided with tubes 15 communication with its apertures and which extend rearwardly of the boiler with an upward inclination, the tubes and said plate being supported below the boiler by any suitable means, the means herein shown being a pair of curved bands 16 to which the tubes are secured, and posts 17 which supportthe bands.
As thus described, combustion of gases, for the most part, will occur below and in close proximity to the boiler and before the heat passes through the fines of the boiler. Since the movement of burning gases will be through passageways 11 and 13 and principally through the inclined tubes 15, they will be deflected and so thoroughly divided that combustion will be practically complete.
In the present instance adequate draft apertures should be provided for the doors 18 to supply a free entrance of air to the fire chamber, and it hasbeen ascertained, in practice, that when air is thus freely provided, approximatelv all of the gases will be consumed and that a very limited quantity of smoke will pass to the stack 9.
It will be noted that the tubes 15 are disposed in spaced relation, which permits gases of lower temperature to pass upwardly between said tubes to a containing-space 19 which is between the boiler and said tubes, this feature being a material aid in combustion.
Since the interior of a furnace has parts more remote from the wall of the boiler, and of lower temperature than others, I provide apertured tubes 20 which are disposed in spaced relation upon bands 21 supported by posts 22. said tubes being disposed transversely of the line of draft, rearwardly of the partition 12 and somewhat lower than the passageway These tubes become intensely heated and operate as an aid in the combustion of gases in the lower part of the furnace which, at that location, often move reversely to the line of draft.
The deflecting plate 14E preferably is of funnel-shape in cross-section and may be considered as outwardly divergent flanges for the lower ends of the tubes 15. This member is of great advantage in instances where the draft through the furnace is more free than ordinary since it operates to break up the gases which do not enter the tubes 15, but may be dispensed with unless the draft is adequate, and, for discharging their function, the tubes 15 do not depend upon the deflecting plate,
The function discharged by the tubes 15 is of ii'nportance since they operate to concentrate the heat closely adjacent to the boiler. It will be understood, of course, that gases will be consumed while moving through these tubes and that this will cause the space 19 to become intensely heated; also it will be understood that gases will move upwardly to said space 19 from the lower part of the furnace, between said tubes, to be consumed in a manner so that the heat will be applied directly to the boiler.
Among some of the advantages to be de rived by use of the invention, it may be stated that the parts required are few and simple so that production may be economical. The inclination of the tubes 15 and their close proximity to the curved wall of the boiler, it is believed, operate as an aid in the draft, and the tubes 20 operate as an aid in the combustion of any gases which may move, in the lower part of the furnace, reversely to the line of draft; and since combustion will occur of practically all of the gases, fuel will be economized.
While I have described construction in detail, I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself in this respect. The partitions 10 and 12 may be placed at such intervals, longitudinally of the boiler, as may be found to be of advantage, and the tubes 15 and 20, as to their location, may be disposed nearer to the front end of the boiler, if desired, and changes in form, size, proportion and minor details may be made found to be of advantage, said changes to be within the scope of the invention as claimed.
Vhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
In a furnace fora cylindrical boiler. said furnace having a fire box and sidewalls, a funnel rearwardly of and communicating with the fire-box, said funnel having a curvature corresponding to the curvature of the boiler and having a concaved part engaging all of that transverse part of the boiler disposed in the plane of the funnel between said side walls, a plurality of pipes communicating with the funnel and having a uniform upward inclination from the fun nel to terminate in the plane of the rear end of the boiler and providing a semicircular compartment below the boiler, above said pipes, and extending to the side walls of the furnace.
