SMOKE-CONSUMING FURNACE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PATRICK H. McGui-- HAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, hav invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke- Consuming Furnaces, of which the follow ing is a specification.
My invention relates to smoke consuming furnaces, and has for one of its objects the provision of an improved construction of furnace by which hot air ismixed with the products of combustion, while in the furnace, to entirely consume said products of combustion and prevent the emission of smoke therefrom.
.My invention furthermore, consists in the provision of means for feeding air and steam to the products of combustion when firing the furnace to caus a complete combustion of the carbon contained in the smoke pouring from the fire box, said air and steam operating to break up the volume of smoke and gases so that they will receive an even mixture of the heated air supplied through my improved air mixers heretofore referred to.
My invention will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,
Figure 1 is a horizontal sectional view of my improved furnace on the plane indicated by the line 1-1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2, a vertical sectional view on the plane indi cated by the line 22 of Fig. 1 showing the boiler in elevation; Fig. 3, a cross section on the plane indicated by the line 33 of Fig. 2, showing the boiler in elevation; and Fig. 4, a cross section on the plane indicated by the line 44: of Fig. 2, showing the boiler in elevation.
My invention consists in the provision of means for mixing hot air with the gases of combustion in a furnace after leaving the fire box, and while pouring over the bridge wall at the rear of the fire box, and consists in a series of openings connected with a hot air chamber, said openings being arranged in a horizontal plane and adapted to admit air which mixes with the gases at the rear of the bridge wall, and also comprises a Specification of Letters Patent.

series of vertical stacks arranged in the rear of the first mentioned openings, said stacks bemg rectangular in cross section and arranged with one of their angles toward the rear of the bridge wall, while the sides of said stacks farthest from the bridge wall-are provided with openings for'the emission of hot air to engage and mix with the gas pouring between the stacks, said openings being so arranged as to thoroughly mix the hot air with the gases and to cause complete combustion thereof.
In the drawings, similar reference characters will be used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
My improved furnace consists of the casing having the front wall 1, the rear wall 2 and the side walls 3 and 4 respectively, and containing the fire box 5 constructed in the ordinary manner, 6 indicating the boiler or other element to be heated by the furnace.
The furnace is provided with the customary doors admitting to the various parts there- Y of, which it is considered not necessary to specifically describe.

in the casing of the bridge wall 7 is a hot air chamber 8 that is connected with a casing 9 under the grate 5 by means of a conduit 10. The casing 9 is adapted for supplying air through the conduit 10 to the chamber 8 and the passage of air thereto is controlled by means of a damper 11 pivotally mounted in said casing 9 and having a rod 12 secured thereto and extending outwardly to the front of the furnace as shown.

lvly invention consists particularly in the provision of an additional means for mixing the hot air with the gases and comprises in addition to the bridge wall, a structure indicated at 14 in the drawings, said addition being relatively lower in height than the bridge wall and providing thereon a series of stacks indicated at 15, substantially rectangular in cross section and having one of the angles. of each of the stacks presented toward the openings 13 heretofore described, thus making the two walls of said stacks indicated at 16 act as deflectors for the gases and hot air and compelling said mixed gases and hot air to pour between the openings formed by the side angles of said stacks. Each of the stacks 15 is provided with a vertical duct 17 communicating with hot air chamber 18 in the casing l t and supplied with air through the ducts 19 communicating with the casing 9, said stacks being also provided with outwardly expanding outlet ports 20 communicating with the duct 17, said outlet ports being located in the two rear walls 21 of the stacks.
Arranged to the rear of the stacks 15 and spaced apart therefrom is a wall 22 provided with a plurality of openings 23, said wall being ordinarily known as the checker wall of the furnace and serves to divide the rear portion of the furnace into. two main compartments, designated 24k and 25, the compartment 24 being the mixing chamber, while the compartment is the main combustion chamber.
26 indicates air ducts extending from the checker wall rearwardly to the rear wall 2 of the furnace, and are provided with valves 27 in the rear terminals thereof, said ducts being adapted to convey air to the mixing chamber Qet to be mixed with the products of combustion therein and assist in the complete combustion thereof.
As is well known, when firing a furnace, a large volume of smoke is produced by the fuel and in. order to break up the column of smoke pouring over the bridge wall 7 at this period, I provide ducts 28 in the side walls 3 and l of the furnace, said ducts 28 being circular at the outer portions thereof and tapered inwardly to the median line of the side walls, the smallest portion of the ducts as indicated at 29 being substantially one-half the diameter at the mouth of the duct. From the smallest portion. 29 of the ducts they are flared vertically, so that the inner ports of said ducts as indicated at 30 are elliptical in contour as clearly shown in Fig. 2,
31 indicates steam jets directed into the mouths of the ducts 28, and serve when in operation, to inject air into the interior of the furnace, the steam being thoroughly mixed with said air by being congested in passing through the outer portions thereof and then expanding in an up mrdly and downwardly direction in passing through the inner portions of the ducts, and when emerging from the orifices 30 is thoroughly mixed with and serve to break up the column of smoke pouring over the fire wall so that the hot air emerging from the openings 13 and 30 heretofore described, may be thoroughly mixed with the smoke and the gases and cause a complete combustion thereof.
In operation, it will be apparent that by my improved construction of air mixing devices, that all of the products of combustion leaving the fire box 5 are thoroughly mixed with hot air supplied through the openings 13 in a horizontal direction, and the mixed gases and air are, by striking the walls 16 of the stacks 15, deflected so that the air emerging from the openings 20 in said stacks is also thoroughly mixed with said gases and air and causes a complete combustion thereof in the chambers 24 and 25, said complete combustion also being assisted by the air emerging from. the ducts 26 which is heated while passing through said ducts located in the lower portion of the combustion chamber 25.
Having thus described the invention what I claim is 1. In a smoke consuming furnace, a bridge wall provided at the rear side of the fire box and provided with air emission ports in its rear face, stacks arrai iged rearwardly of said bridge wall and provided with air emission ports presented rearwardly of said stacks, a checker wall spaced rearwardly of said stacks and provided with a pluality of openings, said checker wall. dividing the furnace into two combustion chambers, and air ducts connecting the rearmost wall of the furnace with said checker wall and having their orifices in the front side of said checker wall.

In a smoke consuming furnace a bridge wall, vertical stacks arranged rcarwardly of said bridge wall, said stacks being substantially rectangular in cross section and having vertical ducts therethrough, the rear wall of said stacks having apertures therein, said apertures being flared at their rearmostextremities, a checker wall spaced rearwardly from the stacks, said checker wall having a plurality of openings and separating the furnace into two combustion chambers, air ducts connecting the rearmost wall of the furnace with the checker wall, said air ducts having their orifices at the front side of said checker wall, valves at the rear? most extremities of the air ducts, said valves sumed gases as they pass over said bridge being adapted to control the flow of air wall. 10 through the ducts and into a mixing cham- In testimony whereof I aflix my signature ber intermediate the stacks, and checker in presence of two witnesses.
