IMPROVEMENT IN CARPET-BEATERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,155, dated September 23, 1873; application filed August 20, 1873.

To all whom t may concern:

Beit known that I, JAMEs HoTEERsALL, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Carpet- Beater; and I do hereby declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which drawing- Figure 1 represents a longitudinal vertical section of this invention. Fig. 2 is a plan or top View of the same.

This invention relates to an improvement in that class of carpet-beaters which I have described in my patent dated December 17, 187 2, N o. 134,059. My present invention consists in the arrangement of swinging levers for supporting the cross-bars in the ends of the oscillating beatingarms, which are provided with stops for regulating the extent of the motion of such swinging supports in such a manner that the cross-bars will yield to a certain extent when brought to bear on the carpet, and, by their inherent gravity, the same will return to their former or original position when raised therefrom.

In the drawing, the letters A A designate beating-arms, which are mounted on a shaft, B, that has its bearing in the upright O of the frame of the beating-machine. An oscillating motion is imparted to such beatingarms A by meansof a crank-rod D. In the open ends of said beating-arms A are levers E, which swing on a pivot, a, and the outer ends of which `are secured to cross-bars F, which serve to beat the carpet; and, by means of such swinging supports, the cross-hars F will give way when brought in contact with the carpet, and thereby the texture of such carpet remains uninjured in the operation of beating. When. the cross-bars F are raised from the carpet, by meansof their swinging supports E, such supports rest on padded cross-pieces b b in the ends of the beatingarms. Stops c c, which are secured to raised projections on the ends of said beating-arms A, serve to regulate the distance of the ascending cross-bars, by the contact of the stop with the cross-bar on the descending end of the beating-arms. Said crossbars E are also padded at their point of contact with the stops c, so that the working of the cross-bars or beaters on the ends of the beating-arms is comparatively noiseless, and, besides, a saving in material is efected, none of the parts being injured by contact with each other.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

The swinging levers E for supporting the cross-bars F, in combination with the oscillating beatingarms A having the stops c c, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
