DEVICE FOR STRETCHING WIRE AND WIRE ROlES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, U'rro Srtir'ronn, a citizen of the German Republic, residing at Futerbog, in the State of Prussia. Germany, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Devices for Stretching Wire and fire Ropes for which I have filed applications in Germany November 1918, D. R. P. No. 318,536, and May 11, 1919, D. R. P. No. 325,060), of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for stretching wire and wire ropes, of the type in which on a guiding-rod, which at one end carries a hook for its suspension from a fixed point, for instance a pole, a pair of clamping-jaws, which serve for pulling and which close automatically, are slidably arranged by means of a lever-gearing, while a second pair of clamping-jaws, which are immovably located between said suspensionhook and said first pulling pair and which close also automatically, hold the stretched wire fast during the time in which said first pulling pair are disengaged from the wire and are, by means of the lever-gearing, again applied thereto at a point toward the front.
With the known arrangements of this type, the wire to be stretched is held fast by camlike pairs of clamping-jaws and is thus liable to be damaged, when stretched, owing to the strong pressure of the coil paratively short clampingsurfaces.
lVith the arrangement of the present invention, instead of the camlike clampingjaws, so called parallel clamping jaws are used, by which damage to the wire can be avoided. Such parallel clamping-jaws, per se alone, are already used heretofore for stretching wires, as a substitute for the known devils'claws or Dutch tongs with camlike jaws used for the same purpose, and that in connection with pulley-blocks, by which the stretching of the wire takes place, the clamping-jaws being here applied to the wire mostly once only, or, if several times, at large intervals only. With said known parallel jaws, however, a universal step-bystep stretching work, by which the jaws, so-to-say, climb along the wire and catch the same again and again at short intervals, cannot be performed.
The essence of the present invention consists, mainly, in the combination of a lever wire-stretcher with a parallel clamping-- Application filed March 31, 1921. Serial No. 457,549.
claw, so that on the one hand a step-by-.
step work can be performed and on the other hand, contrary to the hitherto used devices the wire is prevented from being damaged when stretched. Thus, it is possible with the improved device to stretch also *ires covered with silk or other sensitive material.
Furthermore, with the hitherto used lever wire-stretchers, it is diii'icult to free the readily stretched Wire, that is still clamped fastwith the ends engaged, from the holding-claw of such lever wire-stretchers, owing to the grip of theclamping-jaws being main tained by the pull of the wire.
To meet this inconvenience, according to the present invention, at the point of attach-- ment of the lever-gearing of the pullingclaw, a turnable abutment-arm is located and made of a. length practically equal to the distance between the pulling-claw in its drawn-out position and the holding-claw, said turnable abutment-arm being turned outwards when stretching the wire.
In order to detach the lever wire-stretcher from the stretched wire, the abutment-arm is turned inwards at the moment when the pulling-claw assumes the position required for pulling the wire, i. e. is advanced for attracting the wire. Thereby, the lever gearing receives'a rest or support on the lower edges of a slide of the holding-claw, on which the clamping-jaws, which are clamped fast on the wire by the pull of the same, are movably arranged. Upon the lever-gearing, and thus also the pullingclaw, being then moved, the jaws of the holding-claw are lifted from the stretched wire.
If such a turnable abutment-arm would be used in connection with lever wire-stretchers having camlike jaws. said abutment-arm must first loosen the jaws clamped fast on the wire before the removal of the jaws becomes possible; consequently, with sensitive wires, this might easily result in. a further damage to the latter.

I claim v A device for stretching wire and wire ropes comprising in combination, a guiding rod, a suspension hook at one end of said guiding rod, an automatically closing pulling claw on said guiding rod, a lever gearmg for moving said pulling claw on said guiding rod, an automatically closing holding claw attached to said guiding rod and located between said suspension hook and said pulling claw and adapted to act as soon as said pulling claw is displaced for a further action, and a pair of parallel acting clamping aws on said pulling claw as well as on said holding claw, substantially as and for the pur pose set forth.
