Description

l. H. HILL.
Washing-Machines- ,850, Patented September16,187 3.
luvmtm:
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES E. HILL, vOE BOONE, IOWA.
IMPROVEMENT IN WASHING-MACHINES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent NO. 142,850, dated September 16, 1873 application filed March 1, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HENRY HILL, of Boone, in the county of Dallas and State of Iowa, have invented a new and Improved WashingMachine, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of a rectangular tub with corrugated or ribbed bottom and sides, mounted on trunnions at the sides on a suitable stand, so as to oscillate in its longitudinal plane, with several loose balls of wood placed in it on the clothes to act in conjunction with the water to eEect the washing of the clothes, the tub being oscillated or swung on its trunnions by the attendant to cause the necessary motion of the water, balls, and clothes.
Figure l is a longitudinal sectional elevation of my improved machine taken on the line x of Fig. 2, and Fig. 2 is a transverse section taken on the line y y of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. fgtgA represents the rectangular tub, with ribbed or corrugated sides B and bottom C, and mounted on the journals or trunnions D, in a stand, E, so that it balances and can be readily swung or oscillatcd vertically in its longitudinal plane to agitate the water and cause the -necessary motion for effecting the washing by the balls F of wood, which are placed in the tub with the clothes; also, by the rubbing of the clothes along the bottom and sides of the tub. A cover, G, is fitted on the top, and fastened down tight to prevent the water from slopping out, and a hooked brace, H, is provided to hold the tub against swinging when the clothes are being put :in or taken out; also while the wringer is used, which is clamped on the top of the tub.
While I prefer a tub of rectangular form, I do not limit myself to it; but propose to avail myself of suitable or equivalent form. This plan I consider more simple, economical, and efiicient than any other now in use.
Havin g thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination of an oscillating tub, A, and loose balls F, the tub having corrugated sides and bottom, substantially as specified.
JAMES HENRY HILL.
