Be it known that I, JOHN STRUTHERS BRA- DEN, a citizen ot' the United States, residing at Chariton, in the county of Lucas and State of Iowa, have invented a new and useful lashing-Machine, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in washing machines.

The object of the present invention is to simplify and improve the construction of Washing machines, and t0 provide one in which clothes will be thoroughly washed without liability of injuring fabrics, breaking buttons and the like.

The invention consists in the construction and novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying `drawings and pointed ont in the claim hereto appended.

In the drawings-Figure 1 is a perspective view of a washing machine constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.

l designates an oscillating washing machine body suspended Within a supporting frame by rectangular supports 2, which extend across the bottom of the body and up the sides thereof and have their ends bent outward horizontally to form journals Sarranged in bearing eyes 4. The transverse portions of the rectangular supports 2 are arranged in suitable bearings 5 ot the body and are located equidistant ot' the ends of the latter.

The main or supporting frame consists of opposite inclined crossed legs 6, the coincident ones of each side being formed integral with a transverse base rod 7, and being constructed of metal. The upper ends of the legs above the point of crossing are coiled to provide the eyes 4; the legs are suitably secured together at the point of crossing, and are supported below the same by a horizontal brace 8 disposed longitudinally of the machine, and

having its ends terminating in eyes formed by ceiling the metal and receiving the legs. By this construction a strong, compact and inexpensive main or supporting frame is provided for the Washing machine body.

The Washing machine body has its cover 9 provided with a pane of glass to permit an inspection of its contents; and it is provided at each end with a transverse series of inclined bars 1l, which 'when the body is oscillated, causes the water to spu rt from the ends into the mass of clothes being Washed, thereby quickly removing the dirt and stain from the clothes. The cover when in place rests upon the upper ends of the transverse series of bars, and is secured thereon at one end of the body by a cleat 12, and at the other 4end by a hinged handle frame 13 provided with side bars 14,`Which are pivoted to the sides ot the body, and having a clamping bar l5, which has a projecting port-ion forming a flange 16 to engage the cover.

It will be seen that the washing machine is simple and comparatively inexpensive in construction, that it is strong and durable, and that there is no liability of clothes being injured during the operation ot Washing.

Changes in the form, proportion and the minor details of construction may be resorted to Without departing from the principle or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention.

What I claim is- In a' Washing machine, the combination of abody provided at each end with a transverse series of inclined bars, and having a cleat at one end, a cover supported on said bars and having one end beneath said cleat, and a pivoted handle frame hinged to the body at the opposite end of the cover and provided with a clamping bar havin ga flange, substantially as described.
