Specification of Letters Patent.
Application'filedlvIarch 24,1919. SerialNo. 284,534.
To all whom a may concern:
Be it known that I, .llLDOLF NQNNEN). ANN, a citizen of Germany, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pins, of which the follow ing is a specification.
.This invention relates to hair pins, whether plain or ornamental, being adapted also for application to ornamental combs or other devices or ornaments which may be-worn in the hair.
The invention has for an object to pro vide a novel and simplified arrangement, whereby a hair pin, or otherdevice worn in the hair, may be caused to securelygrip the latter, while at the same time permitting of the easy insertion and removal thereof.
For further comprehension of the invention, and of the objects and advantages thereof, reference will be had to the following description and accompanying drawings, and to the appended claim in which the.various novel features of the invention are more particularly set 'forth.
Figure 1 is a front view of a hair pin constructed according to my invention;
Figure 2 is a similar view showing the manner in which the prongs may be separated for insertion in, or removal from, the hair;
Figures 8,to 12 are similar views to Figure 1 showing difi'erent embodiments, both plain and ornamental, of the invention.
The prime feature of my invention, which is common to all the modifications shown in the drawings resides in the construction or arrangement of the hair pin or comb, or other hair devices, so that prongs or legs are normally held in spring pressure engagement near their outer ends and may be readily separated by compressing their inner ends.
In Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings I show a plain hair pin formed as usual of a single length of wire which, however, is bent in a special manner to embody my invention therein.
As shown the wire is bent upon itself at a point equidistant from the opposite ends to form the reaches 2 which diverge outwardly from one another. Each portion of the wire is then bent forwardly as at 4:, these reaches being substantially parallel to the reaches 2 so that they incline inwardly and forwardly toward one another.
These portions 4- and 5 extend forwardly \oneaanother as will be apparent.
of the portions 2 into close relationto one another and at the point when they are almost, orentirely, in contact the two halves of the wire may he bowed out as at 6 and finally terminate in slightly diverging points 8, which may he in contact with each other at the points where they unite with the bowed parts 6, which latter constitute in effect enclosing loops adapted to grip the hair of the wearer.
The two prongs or legs of the pin may be readily separated for insertion in, or removal from, thehair by grasping the rear end and pressing inwardly thereon as indicated in ll igure 2, causing the two reaches 2 to assume almore nearly parallelrelation to As it will he obviou slthatithe force necessary to compressthereaches 2 toward one another will have practically no effect on'the parts 4: the latter will still maintain theiivparallel relationtothe former andinconsequence will be separated at theirforward endsns shown in Figure 2. The pin may thenbe inserted in, or vithdrawn from, the hair without any tendency toward pulling the latter, and when the hand is removed after insertion of the pin in place, the prongs will close in on each other with a yielding. pressure and hold the pin in place.
In Figure 3 I have shown a slightly modified form of plain hair pin embodying the invention. This form of hair pin, which may conveniently be made of celluloid or the like, comprises the diverging central portions 2 and parallel outside portions l which latter in this case is of approximately equal length to the portions 2 and are continued in the double loops 6 and closely adjacent points 8.
In Figure 4- I have shown a pin having ornamental linger pieces 10 secured thereto at the point where the diverging central reaches 2" are bent to form forwardly extending reaches 4P which latter in this instance are parallel to each other and terminate in converging points 8".
The modification shown in Figure 5 comprises the parts 2, 4, 8 and 10 similar to the corresponding parts in Figure lbut having a looped portion. 6 formed therein.
In the modification shown in Figure 6 the parts 2, 4 8 and 10 are provided which correspond to the similar parts shown in Figure 1- differing somewhat in shape only.
In the modification shown in Figure 7, I
provide the parts 2 4 8 and 10. corresponding to similar parts already described but provide projecting prongs 2 on the parts 2 In the modlfication shown 111 F lgure' 8, instead of a single central compression portion I provide a pair of V-shaped compres-- apparent that these ornamental finger pieces 10 may be omitted.
I11 Figure 9 I show a plain pin having the portions 2 4 and 8 between which latter are provided the convolutions 12.
In Figure 10 I show substantially the same hair pin comprising the parts 2, 4*,
12 and S With the addition of the finger pieces 10 In the modification shown in Figure 11', a comb-like embodiment is presented in which the two halves of the comb may be separated. In this case I provide a pair of central diverging members 2 which unite with a.plura1ity of prongs or teeth 4 the innermost ones of which are in contact or in close adjacence, ornamental finger pieces 10 be-- ing provided.
Figure 12 shows the invention embodied in a comb of the type commonly worn in the hair, and comprising a body 15 and teeth 16. In this case the outer teeth are bent backwardly and outwardly as at Z -and then forwardly and inwardly as at 4" into close relation to the adj acent'teeth, these portions 4" being sprung outwardly in the manner already set forth.
Having thus described my invention and set forth the manner of its construction, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A hair pin constructed of a single length of material and comprising a pair of converging inclined legs, having contact with each other at their extremities a pair of V shaped portions projecting inwardly from the top of the pin towards said extremities, the outer legs ofthe, V shaped portions being parallel with the converging legs, an inverted V shaped portion provided intermediate of the pair of V shaped portions, said inverted portion forming a spring tohold the extremities of the legs resiliently in contact and projections extending from the junction of the converging legs. and the pair of V shaped portions, adapted to be grasped to compress the inverted intermediate spring portion to open the extremities of the converging legs.
In testimony whereof I have affixed my signature. I
ADOLF NONNENMANN.
