COMBINED MUFFLER AND DEODO RIZZElR FOR EXPLOSIYE ENGINES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 4, 1922.
Application filed June 16, 1921, Serial No. 478,072. Renewed May 19, 1922; Serial No. 559,924.
T 0 all whom. it may concern Be it known that I, FRED EM'BANKs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Muflier and Deodorizer for Explosive Engines, of which the following is a specificat-ion.
Mv invention relates to a combined muffler and deodorizer for explosive enginesfand the device is particularly constructed for use in automobiles operated by explosive engines. all as substantially shown and ,described hereafter and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Fig. 1 1s a reduced side view of an automobile equipped with my engine. Fig. 2 is an enlarged longitudinal section of my device, and Fig. 3 is a cross section on line 3- 3 of F i g. 2.
The invention comprises a hollow cylinder 2 having an intake pipe detachably coupled with a screw-threaded pipe 4 extending through the top side of the cylinder near one end thereof. A separate perforated pipe 5 is connected with the lower end of intake pipe extension 4 and pipe 5 is preferably in the form of acoil extend ing lengthwise of the cylinder within the bottom side thereof. The perforations 6 in coil 5 are graduated in'number lengthwise of the coil to provide a freer discharge of the exhaust gases at the Touterend thereof than at the opposite end where connected with extension pipe 4. and this coil is submerged in a liquid confined within cylinder 2-. \Vater may be used or water charged with suitable chemicals to deodorize the fumes discharged by the coil. The treated gases escape from cylinder 2 through a T- shaped outlet member 7 which connects with van outlet pipe 8 extending upwardly and rearwardly from the front end of the cylinder, whereas the intake pipe 3 of the device extends forwardly from the rear end of the c linder toward and to the exhaust manifol of the engine in the automobile.
In this way the intake and outletpipes for the cylinder extend in opposite directions at the top side of the cylinder so that it is impossible for the liquid to overflow and escape through either pipe 3 or 8 respectively when the vehicle is ascending or descending steep inclines. A horizontal diaphragm 9 is also employed within cylinder 2 to provide separate compartments within the cylinder and to serve as a battle member to retard and muflie the escaping gases. One end of diaphragm'9 is provided. with perforations 10 and the gases can only escape from the rear end of the liquid compartment and must travel forwardly in the upper compartment to reach outlet member 7. A filling plug' 11 is provided in the upper side of cylinder 2, and a drain cock 12 is placed at its 'lower side near the rear end ofthe cylinder. A removable cap 14 provides a closure for the front end of the cylinder.
What I claim is:
1. A combined muflier and deodorizer for explosive engines, having inlet and outlet pipes at opposite ends and extending in opposite directions and crossing to prevent the escape of al-iquid in tilting movement of said cylinder and to permit a free discharge of exhaust gases, and saidinlet pipe having an outlet extension in the lower portion of the cylinder. I
2. A combined mufller and deodorizer for explosive engines, comprising a hollowcylinder adapted to contain a liquid having reversely arranged intake and outlet pipe connections at opposite ends thereof and cross-
