MEANS FOR SECURING THE SECTIONS OF A MAST OR POLE TOGETHER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Paflggnted June 20 1922 Application filed March 1, 1920. Serial No. 362,639.
T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that we, FRIEDRICH JAEoKLE, a citizen of the Free State of Baden, in the German Republic, and PAUL MEHLHORN, a citizen of the Free State of Saxony, in the German Republic both residing at Freiburg, in the Free tate of Baden, Germany, have invented an Improvement in Means for Securing the Sections of a Mast or Pole Together; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
It is well known, that wooden masts, telephone and telegraph-poles, are prematurely destroyed by decomposition in that zone, within which the humidity of the ground comes in contact with the air, that is to say, at the surface of earth while the other parts of the wood remain perfectly sound and capable of utilization for a long time. The object of our invention is to render it possible to exchange the part of the pole attacked by the process of decomposition for new and sound one and to rigidly connect the latter with that part of the pole or mast which has remained sound and thereby to preserve it for longer use. With this object in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all of the views.
Figure 1 is an elevation of a pole or mast having the improvement applied;
Figure 2 is a section on line CD of Figurel; and
Figure 3 is a section on line E-F of Figure 1.
In the drawing is shown a pole or mast, the lower decayed portion of which has been removed and replaced by a sound section. The new section 18 extends above the ground 19 and upon it rests the old section 20. As shown at 21 the abutting ends of the sections of the pole or mast have fiat faces, but they can have any other shape Upon the pole or mast so as to overlap the abuttlng ends of the sections 18 and 20 are secured a plurality of curved plates 22, 23, 24 and 25. The plates are provided at their side edges with apertured flanges 28, 29, 30 and 31, and at their ends with reduced and apertured extensions 32, 33, 34 and 35. Through the apertures of the confronting flanges of adjacent plates pass bolts 26 provided with nuts 27, and by which the plates are clamped upon the sections of the pole or mast. The extensions of the plates are secured to the sections of the pole or mast by bolts 40, which pass through the sections and said extensions are provided with nuts 41.
By arranging the plates on thesections of the pole or mast so as to overlap their abutting ends and securing them thereon as shown, the sections are firmly secured together.
Owing to the elasticity of the plates and i the manner in which they are used they may be employed on poles or masts of different sizes.
While four plates are shown, yet a greater or less number may be used. It is also to be understood that the plates may be employed for connecting any number of sections of a pole or mast together.
What we claim is: 1. Means for securing sections of a pole or mast together, comprising a plurality of curved plates adapted to be placed symmetrically around said pole. or mast and each having at its side edges apertured flanges and provided at each end with a reduced extension, the extensions being apertured to permit them to be secured to said pole or mast and bolts connecting the confronting flanges of the plates, the plates being of such a size that when applied the flanges of adjacent plates will be spaced apart.
2. The combination with a pole or mast formed of sections resting one upon the other of a plurality of curved plates each having apertured flanges at its side edges and provided at each end with a reduced and apertured extension, the plates being arranged around the pole or mast and overnames to this specification in the presence lapping the abutting ends of the sections of two subscribing Witnesses.
thereof, bolts connecting the confronting FRIEDRICH JAECKLE flanges of adjacent plates to clamp the plates on the said. pole or mast and bolts passing PAUL MEHLHORN' through the mast or pole and the apertures Witnesses: of the extensions. 7 V KARL BROVATTI,
In testimony whereof, We have signed our J 011., BAPT. ZURICK.
