J. E. CALDWELL BRUSH HEAD Filed April .16 P 1.7924
gwuento J. U0/0 We// Patented Sept. 23, 1924.
UNITED STATES JAMES E. CALDWELL, OF FAYETTEVILLE, TENNESSEE.
BRUSH HEAD.
Application filed April 16, 1924.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES E. CALDWELL,
a citizen of the United States, residing at F ayetteville, in the County of Lincoln and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Brush Head, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in brush heads and has for its principal object to provide a simple and eflicient device wherein the brush member may be readily removed and replaced by a new one when worn out.
A further object of the invent-ion is to provide abrush head of the above mentioned character, wherein a pair of coacting members are associated in such a manner as to provide means for receiving and clamping therebetween the bristles of a brush whereby the latter may be securely carried by the brush head.
A further object is to provide a brush head of the above mentioned character, which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and furthermore adapted for the purpose for which it is designated.
Other objects and advantages of this invention will become apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals designate like parts throughout the same Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved brush head, and
Figure 2 is a central vertical section therethrough.
In the drawing, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates generally my brush head and the same comprises the body portion 2 which may be formed of any suitable material preferably aluminum, although I do not wish to limit myself to the particular kind of material of which the brush head may be constructed. Provided in the upper portion of the body 2 and arranged centrally therein is the downwardly tapering opening 3, the same being provided for the purposes of receiving the forward end of a suitable handle (not shown).
The lower portion of the body 2 is cut Serial No. 706,950.
away as illustrated at 4 for substantially its full length and provided on the inner face of the cut away portion 4 are the vertically extending recesses 5, the same being arranged in spaced relation with respect to each other in the manner illustrated in Figure 1 and for the purposes hereinafter to be more fully described.
Adapted to cooperate with the cut away portion 4: of the body 2 is the clamping plate 6, the inner face of which is also provided with a plurality of vertically extending recesses such as shown at 7 for cooperation with the recesses 5 provided on the inner face of the cut away portion 4. The recesses provided in the inner opposed faces of the cut away portion and clamping plate respectively register with each other to provide the sockets 8 in the bottom of the brush head for the reception of the upper ends of the separate bunches of bristles 9.
The upper ends of the bristles 9 are set in rubber and are vulcanized in the manner well known in the art. For the purpose of holding the bristles in their respective sockets formed in the bottom of the brush head, I provide the securing bolts 10 which extend through the upper portions of the clamping plate 6 and the cut away portion 4iof the body 2 in the manner clearly illustrated in the drawing. Any number of these clamping or securing bolts may be provided as is desired.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing description, that a brush head has been provided wherein the brush member which comprises a plurality of bristles may be readily removed from the sockets provided in the brush head when the same have become worn out and may be replaced by new ones by removing the clamping plate in the manner as is obvious from the construction shown.
The simplicity in which my brush head is constructed enables the same to be manufactured at a very low cost, and the parts further so arranged as to permit the same to be readily disassembled or assembled without the loss of considerable time or labor.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that various changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention and the scope of the appended claim.-
Having thus described my invention, What I claim is A brush head comprising a body portion having a handle receiving opening provided in the upper portion thereof and arranged centrally therein, the lower portion of the body portion being cut away, a clamping plate cooperating with the cut away portion, said cut away portion and the clamping plate being provided with opposed cooperating recesses formed in the inner opposed faces thereof providing a plurality of sockets in the bottom of the brush head, a series of bunches of bristles having their upper ends disposed in said sockets, and securing bolts extending through the clamping plates and the cut away portion.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
JAMES E. CALDWELL.
