Be it known that I, ROBERT N. Cox, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVaukegan, in the county of Lake and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Milk-Bottle-Cap Removers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

Milk bottles and like wide mouthed containers sealed by paper closures frequently splash their contents when removing the closure, this being due to the flexible nature of the closure which yields suddenly when attempting to thrust a fork or other pointed instrument therein preliminary to, removal of the closure in the ordinary way.

This invention provides the paper cap or closure with a pull piece in the nature of a strip which extends diametrically across the under side of the cap, with its ends folded thereover and secured thereto, one of the ends being loose to be gripped between the thumb and finger of the hand when drawn upon in the act of opening the bottle.

Other objects and advantages will be apparent and suggest themselves as the nature of the invention is understood.

While the drawing illustrates an embodiment of the invention it is to be understood 7 that in adapting the same to meet different conditions and requirements, various changes in the form, proportion and minor' details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention.

The numeral 1 lesignates a paper cap such as generally provided for sealing milk bottles' and likewise mouth containers. In accordance with the present invention a'strip 2 of suitable material extends diamerically across the under side of the cap 1 and its end portions are folded about the edges of the cap and against the top thereof. The folded ends are made secure in any manner either by a suitable adhesive or other determinate way. The strip 2 maybe of any material such as paper or textile and is treated to render the same moisture proof. The folded ends of the strip 2 are indicated at 3 and 4. the end portion i being longer than the folded end 3. The terminal portion of the folded end 4 is left loose, as indicated at 5, to provide a convenient grip when removing the closure. In the preferable arrangement the loose end 5 is in contact with the top of the cap 1 so as to facilitate the stacking of a number of the caps either for storage or when in position in the capping machine. In the event of paraffin being 2 moisture proof and as stiffening means therefor. it may also serve as means for securing the folded ends 3 and 4 to" the top or outer side of the cap. The intermediate portion of the strip 2 may be loose or secured as desired.

The loose end 5 may be reinforced, as indicated at 6 in Figure 4, by a metal binding, or by means of a metal tip 7, as indicated in the remaining views. A depression 8 is provided to receive the reinforced end of the strip to admit of its coming flush with the top of the cap.

In the modification shown in Figures 7 and 8 the folded ends 3 and 4 of the strips 2 are secured between the plies or' layers of the cap and the upper ply or layer has its central portion cut away to provide the depression 8 for the reception of the reinforced end 7 of the strip 2.

To open a milk bottle sealed by a cap embodying the invention it is necessary only to lift the loose terminal portion 5 and grip the same between the thumb and fin er of the hand and exert a pull thereon. T is results in detaching or loosening the folded end 4 and enables the pull to be applied at the edge of the cap which yields readily ends having'its terminal and comes away from the bottle without any tendency to splash the contents thereof which is objectionable when removing paper closures in the accustomed way by the use of a fork or like pointed instrument.

Having thus described the invention, what I claim is 1- 1. A paper cap and an opening stripof substantially uniform width throughout its length having its intermediate portion extending across the under side of the cap, and

having its end portion projecting to unequal distances and folded to engage opposite edges of the cap and secured thereto, the shorter end being attached-throughout its extent and the. longer end having its terits top to receive the reinforced end of the strip.

3. A paper cap having a recess opening through its upper side and an opening strip applied to the under side thereof and having the end portions of the strip projecting and folded to engage opposite edges of the 'cap' and secured thereto, one of the folded ends having its terminal reinforced and located in said recess.

4. A paper cap comprising layers, the top layer having its central portion cut away, and an opening strip extending along the underside of the cap projecting and folded about the edge of the lower layer and secured between the layers thereof, the terminal portion of one of the and having its ends' portion loose and folded ends lying in the cut away portion of the upper layer of the cap.
