JOHN ALDEN I-IIGGS, OF JVARFEHAIVI, MASSACHUSETTS BOTTLE-OPENER.
Application eiea December 4, leis; serial to. 342,331
To all whom it may concern:
it known that T, J o iN ALDEN Times, a citizen of the lnited States, residing at 4 il areham, in the county of Plymouthand State of Massachusetts, have invented can tain new and useful. improvements in Bottle-Openers, of which the followingisa specification. l 1
The invention provides an article of simple and light construction which is adapted for a variety of uses and chiefly for rem0ving the paper covers of milk bottles and the:
crimp metal caps of bottles containing beverages and relishes.
The drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention. However, it is to be understood that in adapting the same to meet different conditions, various changes in the form, proportion, and minor details of construction may be resorted to without departing from the nature of the invention as claimed hereinafter.
The accompanying drawings illustrate a preferred embodiment of the invention and on reference thereto:
Figure 1 shows a top plan View of the article,
Fig. 2 is a detail viewof the blank preliminary to being bent into the completed form, Fig. 3 is a side view of the device, and Fig. 4 is an end view thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following descriptionand. indicated in the several views of the drawings by like reference characters.
' The article comprises a body 1, point 2, and butt 3. The several elements constitute parts of a single blank of sheet metal which is stamped or struck up in the form sub stantially as indicated in Fig. 2. The body 1 is relatively wide and of circular form and the point 2 and butt 3 are elongated and in line coinciding with the diameter of the body 1. The blank formed as outlined in Fig. 2, is bent on the dotted lines 4, the same coinciding with opposite sides of the butt 3 and point 2. The part comprised between the dotted lines 4 may constitute the base, and the butt 3 and point 2 are in effect prolongations of the base. The wings 5 exterior to the dotted lines 4c are bent approximately at a right angle to the base and are inwardly inclined at their outer edges which are brought together, as shown most clearly in Figs. 1 and 4. In this manner, the
edge portion of thewings 5 andconstitutes the opener for the usual crimp metal. cap
' wings mutually brace each other and result in providing a finger grip, whereby the ar- 3 ticle, may be conveniently handled and manipulated A notch 6 is formed 1n an used as closing means for bottles. The parts bordering upon'the notch 6 are shaped so as to give the best results One of the parts is made rounding and the remaining part approximates the outline of a beak=shaped point which will positively engage a crimped metal cap and prevent slipping when the" device is-utilized as a bottle cap opener: of this type. The point'2is made sharp so as to readily penetrate the paper covers generally employed as closures for milk bottles and like wide mouth receptacles. The point 2 may also be utilized as a can opener and for opening paper packages containing articles of food. The middle'porti'on of the body 1 is cut out, as indicated at 7 for the sake of lightness and also to enable a firmer grip being obtained on the article when manipulatingthe same. Inner extensions 8 are formed opposite the notches 6 to prevent weakening the wings 5 ata point opposite said notches. An opening-9 is formed in the butt 8 and enables the articles to be "suss pended from a nail or other engaging de vice. I
When it is required to remove the paper cap from a milk bottle, the point 2 is thrust into the cap and a pressure upon the butt 3 serves to liftthe cap from the bottle and the wings 5 may be grasped to admit of the device being conveniently handled. When the article is required for'use to remove the usual crimp metal cap, the point bordering upon the notch 6 is engaged with the edge of the cap in a manner well understood and the butt 3 is lifted, thereby detaching the cap from the bottle. The point 2 may be used as an opener for cans or paper packages and for a variety of uses requiring the application of a pointed instrument.
The foregoing description and the drawings have reference to what may be consldered the preferred, or approved form of my invention. It is tobe understood that I a may make such changes in construction and arrangement and combination of parts, materials, dimensions, et cetera, as may prove expedient and fall withinthe Scope of the invention as claimed. 1 a r Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentii-s z I V 1. An article of the character specified, comprising a narrow base having a point at one end and a butt at the opposite end and wingsat opposite sides of the base and pro; 'jecting therefrom to form a finger grip, saidi wings being inwardly inclined and having their outer edge portions brought together,
and notched in their outer edgesto form an opener for crimped metal caps. '2. 'An article ofthe' character specified, comprising an approximately circular body having its middle portioncut away and having opposed projections at diametrically opvent weakening;
posite points, one of such'projections constituting a butt and the other a point, said body having its side portions bent outwardly in the same direction with their outer edges inner extensions opposite the notches to pre In testimony whereof Iaifix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
