CARBON PAPER.
Application filed August 4, 1920. Serial No. 401,140.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that I, ELIZABETH L. BUR- NETT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Boston, in the county of Suffolk and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Carbon Papers,of which the following is a full, clear, and exact speclfication.
Several attempts have been made by inventors to devise means whereby the typist can know when the lower edge of the paper is nearly reached when being written upon by the typewriting machine, but each has some objectionable feature, such as the necessity of applying some special device to the paper, or providing the platen with an indicating device requiring to be carefully set when the paper is introduced upon-the machine. 7
My invention has for its object to adapt the carbon paper itself, which is practically always used 1n modern writing and especially in commercial writing, so that the typist needs to pay no attention to anything but the proper application of the carbon paper to the sheet to be typed, and bottom of the latter or any other predetermined point thereon will be visible at a glance.
In doing this I prefer to make the carbon sheet wider than the paper to be written upon, and to provide one or both of the outjutting margins with suitable numerals or significant signs by means of which will be revealed the number of lines above the bottom of the paper reached by the typist, or the position on the page; as half way down, or one-fourth from the bottom. In order that these markings shallbe visible, it is essential to apply them to the back of the carbon paper; and "to permit the carbon paperto be used either end up, and so to obviate any necessity of care in mounting it upon the paper,.I prefer to have the markings on both lateral margins and in diagonally opposite corners, so that each shall read right side up whichever comes in view.
The drawing forming part of this specification shows two sheets of writing paper bearing between them a sheet of carbon paper embodying my improvements, some of the corners thereof being represented as folded back for av clearer representation of the Same.
The reference numerals 1, 2 and' 3 designate the three sheets, 1 being the one on which the original typewriting is to appear; 2, the carbon copy, and 3, the carbon paper havlng its surface 4 the one provided with the carbon-deposit.
On this carbon paper 3, which is shown as having its lateral margins 5 extending beyond the side-edges of the sheets 1, 2, but of substantially the same length, are printed, or otherwise formed, the indicator numerals and other designating signs. These numerals and signs are all upon the back of the carbon paper and in the margins 5.
By preference, a line is applied on each margin at its midlength, accompanied with the fractional number as shown at 6; the same being reversed in the two margins. Similarly, one-quarter of the distance from the foot of the sheet is indicated by the fractional number and from this point to the bottom of the sheet lines 7 are printed corresponding with the normal lines of writ- 1 ing of. the typewriter. The lower four of these spacings are provided with numerals designating the first, second, third and fourth line. from the bottom edge.
In addition to these numerals, I prefer to color the lowest three spaces with some tint in striking contrast with the back of the carbon paper, as red, represented in the drawing by the vertical lines 9. Likewise, I
prefer to color the spaces in the vicinity of the number a, the object 'in each case being to render these points strikingly visible to the eye of the typist even when working by the touch system; for, evenwhen the operator of the machine has her eyes fixed upon her notes, these striking colors will obtrude themselves upon the sensitive lateral portion of her retina and warn her of the close approach of the bottem of the paper. I
lthough I have illustrated the markings as readable in the right hand margin, I do not, of course, restrict myself thereto,"11or the paper with which it is to be used, the back of the carbon paper bearing in said marginal spaces certain lines and numerals, each margin bearing 3; at its midheight, i at one-fourth of the distance from the foot of the sheet, this latter space -having lines corresponding with the normal lines of the typewriting machine'and numbered from the bottom of the sheet.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing 10 invention, I have hereunto set my hand this 3rd day of Aug, 1920.
ELIZABETH L. BURNETT.
