Patented August 12, 1873.

HENRY ORGUTT, OF AMHERST, WISCONSIN.
IMPROVEMENT IN DOCR-FASTENERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 141,724, dated August 12, 1873 application filed June 14, 1873.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY OROUTT, of Amherst, in the county of Portage and State of Wisconsin, have invented a new and Improved Door-Fastener, of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists in applying a semicircular barto a door and arrangingaweighted lever to en gage therewith, (the bar being notchedor perforated for the purpose,) so that the door may be locked in any position, shut, open, or partly open, as hereinafter described.
The contrivance is designed more particularly for stable, carriage-house, barn, and shop doors; but it is alike applicable for doors of dwelling-houses also.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a door with my improved holding contrivance and the device for tripping the latch. Fig. 2 is a plan view, and Fig. 3 is another side elevation, showing the apparatus slightly modified.
Similar letters of reference indicate correspondin g parts.
A represents a notched or perforated semicircular bar attached at each end to the building inside, over the door 0, or near its top, so
as to be concentric with the circle described by the door in swinging on its hinges. B repprojection, O, thereat bears on the bar, so that whenever it comes to a notch or hole, as the door swings, the said edge or projection will enter by the action of gravitation and hold the door fast. The notches are arranged at intervals, so as to hold the door more or less wide open, as required, and one notch is arranged so as to fasten it shut. D is a cord connecting the light end of the Weighted latch with a revolving knob-spindle, E, so that by turning the spindle and windingthe cord on it the latch can be pulled out of the notches readily to release the door for opening or closing it. F represents a button that may be used insteadof the cord-and-knob spindle, the button being arranged to act directly on the latch Without the intervention of a cord and a special spindle being provided for it to turn it from the opposite side of the door.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent Thecoinbination of the semicircularnotched or perforated bar and a weighted latch, B, with a door, substantially as described.
HENRY OROUTT.
