Description

J; NHLAWLOR.
OPTICIANS TOOL.
APPLICATION FILED 0m. 1. 1920.
Patented May 9, 1922.
Qumran sm t urns M- LAWIIQR 0 10: 3am ten es teammate? re I I arme la seta-tea e v I i l To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES M; LAWLoma citizen ofwlthe United States, residing at Togeka, in the county of Shawnee and State of i'ansas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements 1n Opticians ,Tools;
and Ido declare the following to be a full, clear, andexact description of the invention, such aswill enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to t he'letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part ofsthis specification. I
- This'invention relates to Opticians tools and particularly to atooladapted to be used as a pince'r's' or clamp for assembling eye-glass mountings, for effecting adjustments and for use in connection with the general organization of suchimountings, and
particularly for: remounting and replacing lens frames. v It is the purpose ofmy invention to pro vide at ool which is capable of effectively crimping-tor pinching the rim clamps at the ends ofthe bridge piece to the lens frames in-s uch manner that a tight union will be provided without liability of crushing the edges of the lenses.
It is also the purpose of my invention to 5 provide an improvedtool which is adapted to be utilized as ahand clamp for efii eiently holding the mounting so that the bridge may be bent to provide'the proper adjustment to suit the user, the. device being also capable 1 of holding the mounting in clamped position for effecting the requisite adjustments and assembly of th lnose clamp finger pieces,
etc) 1 1 The invention also contemplates the provision of means for adjusting the limits of movement between". the clamping jaws to wprovide for various thicknesses of the'material'tobe held between them, this'being 45 important when the jaws are brought together.
-lOther objects" ofthe-invention will b re- I -ferred to l hereinafter, it being understood that changes in form, proportion and minor fdeta-ils'iof construction-may be resorted to 1 without departing from the-spirit of the invention .or sacrificing any of itsadvan- -tages." II I s eet e of Le Bet-ae ends of the bridge, and
warms 10.9
In the drawings, I a c- F g. 1*1s a perspective view ofatool constructed in accordance with my invention.
Fig; 2 is a vertical, sectional view through the, handle grips,- the jaws being shown in elevation. s I I 3' is a perspective view of-the'j'aws.
Fig. is a detached view of='a rnounti'ng,
part of a lens and frame being shown ready to be engaged by the'terminal clampsonthe Fig. 6 is afperspe'ctive view of anexp a'nd mg tool, a supplemental jaw being shown in removed position;

Patent d May 9,1322- Applicatiqn filed October 1, 1920. Serial No1414j0 35- I if I VReferring now to the drawings-"bynu- 1 designatesa rigid jaw at oneend of I elbow lever 2, thelo wer end of the elbow.
lever extending at an obtuse angle to'fthe jaw 1 and havingvat its lower extremity a plvoted handle grip 3, fastened thereto" by vIll a fastening device shown as a screw a, whereby it is adapted to rock withrespect to the lever 2. The upper end of the grip is pro- 8O vided with a perforation 5, throu gh'*which projects a threaded stud'filiaving at onezend a nut 7 adapted to bear against the outer face of the'grip- 3 to "move vit against the action of the "spring 8 so that the cam face 930D the upper end of the grip may be moved into and out of engagement-lvvith' the :curved T11 face 10 of an actuating lever 11,1:iivoted to the 'rigid lever 2 at 12 and carrying loilgitudinally movable jawwstem '13- 'pivoted' thereto by the pivot 14' whereby when the movable jaw, stem :13 will be" reciprocated 'so that-the jaw portion 15 wil l:be moved toward and awayfromthejawl- T he actuating "lever grip portions Stand 12.,are normally moved extended posi-itions because the spring 16, fastened to the ngers, the jaw portion: 1'5 will aw 1 to grasp :bfeflmoved toward'the rigid the article-to be heldgor pink; ed es the case: 'maybef lever 11 is swung about the pivot 14,-.the
:3 and ll are rasped, however; and squeezed L between the '1 and 2 into closer relation.
In order to hold the movable jaw 13 in proper co-operative relation with respect to the jaw portion 1 of the lever 2, a loop or strip 17 is provided, the ends of which are fastened to the jaw 1 as at 18, the loop portion extending about the movable jaw 13 to allow it to freely move longitudinally therein and constitute a guide, as will be clearly apparent by reference to Figs. 1 and 3. The right angularly projecting portion 15 constitutes the actual jaw on the member 13 and is provided with a groove 19 in line with the groove 20 in the rigid jaw 1. This is for the purpose of permitting the finger piece 21 to lie in the groove 19 and the nose clamp stem 22 for the nose clamp 23 to lie in the groove 20, the nose clamp 23 being receivable in the transverse groove 24: in jaw 1 and the aligning recess 25 in the jaw stem 13.
The grooves allow the jaws to readily clamp the clamps 26 on the ends of the bridge 27 and cause said clamps to bind upon the grooved frames 28 or 29 to secure the lens in place. 1
The jaws 1 and 15 are provided with grooves 30 and 31 to provide for the transverse curvature of the frames and the jaws lengthwise are preferably formed on arcs shorter than the arcs from which the curved portions of the clamps 26 are formed so that the ends 32 and 33 of the clamps 26 will be tightly bound upon the frames 28 and 29.
It will be understood, of course, that the mounting may be inverted with respect to the position shown in Fig. 41, if desired, but ordinarily, the clamps 26 will be pinched upon the frames in the position shown although I do not wish to be limited to this particular position of the tool in making the adjustments.
In order to prevent a crushing force being exerted against the clamps 26, I have provided means for adjusting the space between the jaws and this is accomplished by manipulating the nut 7 so that the cam portion 9 of the grip lever 3 will move toward and away from the curved portion 10 of the grip lever 11, the position of the cam 9 determining how close together the jaws can be brought. That is, the closer the upper portion of the grip member 3 is to the lever 2. the further the cam portion 9 will be forced toward the portion 10; therefore. the space will berelatively large, but if the nut is loosened, the cam portion 9 will move away from 10, allowing the grip members 3 and 11 to come closer together and bring the jaws Therefore, any adjustment between two extremes may be provided.
In connection with the tool I may utilize an expander, shown in Fig. 6 as consisting of the jaw members 34 and 35, pivoted at 36 and having expanding portions 37 and 38, to
one of which may be secured supplemental jaw members 39 fastened in any suitable manner so that the jaw member may be renewed, should the occasion demand. The expander shown in Fig. 6 is adapted for spreading the portions preparatory to being clamped so that they can be placed upon the device upon which they are to be pinched to fasten them thereto.
It will be apparent that the device may be modified in construction to suit diiferent conditions without materially departing from the actual invention so I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact details shown.
What I claim and desire to secure by Let ters-Patent is: I
1. An opticians tool comprising a rigid jaw member having a longitudinal groove and a transverse groove in its outer face parallel with the end of the jaw, and a grooved clamping face at its end, a longitudinally movable jaw member having a groove in its outer face aligning with the longitudinal groove in the rigid jaw memher, and means for moving the, movable jaw member toward and away from the rigid jaw member in parallel relation thereto;
